Building charm, room, staff
Lovely old building to stay in. It's a quiet part of town and despite it being next to a train station (not metro) and a building site, it still feels very relaxed.

Stayed 1 night

Cleanliness, convenient for ferry, reception staff
Reception and the general standard of the hotel were very good. I would use this hotel again if catching the ferry. The restaurant had very good food 'though the waiter could be more helpful and the car parking was expensive. There was a Rail line just outside our room which could be annoying on a longer stay.

Surprisingly nice hotel.

The exterior, the burgers, the suburb
This hotel has a few pros and cons. You probably want to hear the cons first: While we were there, there was a fair outside the back of the hotel playing extremely loud pop music every day until around 2am. Whether this is a frequent occurrence I can't say, but it ruined the atmosphere somewhat. Parts of the interior are shabby, as other reviewers have noted, but it's nowhere near as bad as some have made it sound, at least not now. Groups of teenagers do hang around outside the hotel (presumably due to the notability of the building itself - one of the grandest in Santurtzi), but this shouldn't be a problem. The rooms themselves are lovely - not luxury (although I can't speak for the suites), but more than adequate. The restaurant and room service are reasonably priced and delicious. The veal burger is especially recommended, and the service is fine, if not spectacular. Reception staff are perfectly helpful, without being intrusive. Speaking Spanish (or Basque!) helps. Although the hotel is 20 minutes from the centre of Bilbao, this is via the metro (Peñota station). As Bilbao Metro is one of the most efficient and pleasant I have travelled on, this is no bad thing. Santurtzi / Santurce itself is a rather nice fishing suburb which has been swallowed in the Bilbao agglomeration while maintaining a strong sense of its identity (look for purple flags). Locals are extremely friendly and helpful, so for us it was no problem not being in the centre of Bilbao. The views are unorthodox but beautiful across the estuary. Industrial chic, you might say.
