Villa Mayurana is a beautiful place in a beautiful location. The rooms are great and especially the bathrooms. As lovely as it is, it's not a 5 star hotel - no matter how many times the management will tell you (without you asking for it) over your stay.
* They tell you that you can have any food you want in the world (as long as it is Sri Lankan curry) or sandwiches for lunch. During my less than 24h stay I was offered curry and sandwiches twice. The sandwiches were terrible with several chicken bones in the sandwiches.
* The manager seemed completely clueless how to arrange transport away from the villa and didn't want to speak to the drivers himself.
* Staff English was significantly lower than the average service you encounter in Sri Lanka
* No hot water in the bathroom
* Gym closed at 6pm and it was "impossible" to make an exception (i.e. switch on the lights)

A weekend escape to koggala lake

The villa offers beautiful views of the cinnamon plantation and is a very peaceful property to escape to for a relaxing weekend break. The owner himself stays at the property and is very welcoming and hands on and was always around to help with anything or to greet us, offering a unique luxury bed and breakfast experience. Since there are limited guests with only 2 rooms the chef will take the time to ask what you would like to eat and will prepare meals as per the guests preferences. Although the hotel rate offers a set continental breakfast menu of toast and fruit, the chef was happy to make a sri lankan breakfast for us. The owner Thomas also has a private fitness instructer who will be able to assist in the gym if required. The best part of the hotel stay was the location which offers a great place to cycle - however please make sure to notify Thomas in advance if you require bike rental as they are brought in from outside. To sum it up the experience really is tailor made to each guest by Thomas and his friendly staff.

Finally Felt Like True Guest

After having stayed in hundreds of hotels throughout the world, from 6 star statements of oppulence in the Middle East to the cosy B&B's of the Welsh countryside and everything in between, our stay at Villa Mayurana has shown us the difference between being a customer and a truly welcome guest.
The property itself, set amist a hilltop is serene, beautifuly landscaped gardens offering a 360 degree view of the lush greenery around and the Indian ocean in the distance. Inside the villa, we found pristinely cleaned and kept rooms faithful to the colonial style of yesteryear, luxurious bathrooms and the attention to detail and quality throughout is quite remarkable. The owner has a thing for quality - you can see it from the netting of the curtains and wood furnishings to even the type of security safe provided to guests.
The food at Villa Mayurana was simply delicious. Although we were presented with a menu every day to choose what Chef Nirodha would make for us at dinner, we always asked for something off menu, inspired by our love for Sri Lankan cuisine. The resulting incarnation at dinner time was what we asked for, beautifully prepared and presented, served with a professionalism and courteousness that would teach a thing or two to the Michelin star restaurants of the world. Breakfast was equally appealling, the freshest fruit followed by eggs, sausages and bread.
But what really made this stay special and different to anything else that we have experienced before, was the way the staff made us feel. Right from the moment we arrived, we were made to feel extremely welcome and immedietly felt at home. It was like staying with a very wealthy long lost uncle who had gone away on a trip, and left his faithful staff with instructions to look after us with the utmost care. We were there for a night, it was a complete relaxation for us. There was none to disturb us, we had our private space and the environment created by Thomas is just amazing. The landscape, the staff and the owner himself were very helpful.

Luxury on every level

We stayed 4 nights at Villa Mayurana and cannot fault anything. Having read previous reviews, this villa exceeded our expectations. The villa is perched on a hilltop with fantastic views. The house itself is set on spacious grounds and well-equipped, with a great gym and large pool that I would expect only for larger properties. We were lucky to be the only guests during our stay and it felt not like a hotel, but rather like staying at the house of a very wealthy friend. The staff were very attentive but not intrusive, and service was personal and professional. Thomas arranged for airport pickup and sendoff, as well as a trip to a nearby tea plantation where we received a fantastic tour. We ate most meals in the villa, and the food was great, both Western and Asian meals. We didn't expect such good food from a villa with only three rooms. We wanted to have crabs for lunch on the last day, and the staff specially went out on a trip to town to buy crabs. Such was the level of attention. Having been to a fair share of luxury properties around the world, Villa Mayurana really offers fantastic value. It is comparable to resorts like Banyan Tree but even better because of the personal attention and privacy it offers. Usually this level of luxury comes at a much higher price point.

Stunning location and view

It was a very nice hotel, stunning views.. With just three suites, very quite and private. Only concern were that the food menu didn't have prices and we were a bit shocked at our final bill when checking out. The prices for lunch, dinner and snacks were higher than other hotels in Sri Lanka. Would be good to have more variety in the menu and the prices included. Apart from the food, the staff are very friendly. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious, had a lovely relaxing time at this villa.
