The hotel with awesome landscape and sea view

Outdoor landscape, Sea view, Traditional Sri Lankan Food
The hotel is located in countryside. The front end is faced on a small river “Gini Oyea” and back end is faced on sea. The landscape is so awesome. This is a good place for paying a relaxed holiday. If you wish to taste traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry meals then you do not hesitate to book this hotel. The members of staff are friendly and helpful. The major drawbacks are mentioned that the beach is not private as noted in their web and also it has been filled garbage and dogs’ mob, and internet service is poor quality.

Perfect start for a perfect trip

Totally relaxing, nice stuff, really good swimmingpool for kids
The driver pickend is up from the airport.. After a 45 min drive he cruises around some cornes.. Then we arrived. Totally laid back, very calm! Really nice room and relaxed stuff in a good way. We travel a lot wird our Kids and Villa Sunbird was the perfect Start for us! Clean rooms, nice people, awesome pool for kids, really good food and a chilling armosphere at the veranda! Hang out at the veranda, watch the birds and get a feeling at the beach what Sri Lanka really looks like! If we come back to Sri Lanka, we will come back to Villa Sunbird! Thanks!

A nice quiet hotel

Privacy, nice location, good clean rooms
It is comprised of two separate units and has a total of six rooms. A quiet place with a nice view of the ocean. It is situated right next to the beach. The rooms are spacious and the staff is friendly. It is a good place for a quiet getaway for a few days.

Peaceful first night in Sri Lanka

Peaceful, good food, value for money
Overall a good budget choice. Water pressure needs to be improved. Difficult to find - make sure you have directions.

A lovely surprise

Tranquil location and great staff
I chose to stay at the Villa Sunbird on my last night in Sri Lanka. The staff were exceptionally accommodating, and pleasant to chat to. They were all really hospitable without being intrusive. The room was very comfortable with a lovely view of the ocean. The downstairs area is great for relaxing in and catching a sea breeze. Although the sea outside is quite choppy, I did go for a swim but would not recommend it for weak swimmers. The staff informed me they were building a swimming pool, which will be a wonderful addition to a truly lovely stay.

Right on the beach, great service. 12km from Negom

Great view of the sea. Good food. Good rooms and service.
If you're looking for as minimal interaction as possible with other tourists (which I was!), this is a great place. It's right on the beach and the other side faces a small canal/ lagoon (thankfully not smelly!). The rooms are great - there are 2 villas, each with 2-3 bedrooms and a large dining + living room and a sit out. The furniture is great - clearly period stuff and great to lounge in. The view from the 2 rooms on the first floor is super - open out the windows and you're looking at a vast expanse of sea! :) The beach is quite good - isnt white-sand or clear, but the fact that there's pretty much no one else around makes it awesome :) The staff - Dhammika, Dasanayake & another chap - are extremely hospitable and ever ready to help. They make great food - the prawns were the best we've ever had. Couldnt try the signature crab dish though for lack of availability of crab in the market the days we were there :( Found the food too spicy on the first day and from the next meal they'd managed to hit just the right level of spice! :) As some reviews mentioned, there is a fair amount of bird life near the canal/ backwater - we spotted 4 green bee-eaters sitting on the electric line the very first day and some white pigeons, but sadly no more birds since then (other than crows :D). Also spotted large (4-5ft long) water monitors in the canal on 2 separate occasions, though they didnt quite come onto the land :( Also spotted a Bengal monitor down the road. The place is about 12km from the heart of Negombo (about 8km from Jetwing Sea resort), but not too difficult to locate. Public buses ply very frequently (~every 10 mins or so) on this route (Negombo-Chilaw) and are a super cheap way to get to Negombo.. No swimming pool, gym etc and other trappings of a fancy hotel though :/ A touch expensive at ~15,000 LKR/night, but worth it!

good value for your money, not really in negombo

clean room, nice staff
we choose villa sunbird for our last night before we had to fly back home. the room was ok, bathroom and room were clean, staff was nice and well organised. they served breakfast already at 6 a.m. and the promised car was waiting for the airport transfer. the location at waikkal beach is a bit remote. the hotel is situated between lagoon and beach, nothing around. the sea has strong currents here, so that you cannot swim. therefor we would not recommend this place for a longer stay.

Off the beaten track

Beautiful, calm, peaceful
we really didn't know what to expect from this place, and it took us a bit by surprise. the hotel is located in waikkal (not negombo). waikkal is a fishing village about 10km north of negombo beach (where there is a large cluster of beach side hotels). this is a completely not tourist beach. there are hardly any other hotels around and there are no tourists (or locals for that matter) on the beach in front of it. and we went during the tourist season (jan 1 - jan 3). the only people you see are the fishermen taking their boats out and in. this makes for a completely private experience. the only tourists you will meet are the ones in the hotel and there are only 4-6 rooms in this place. the place is beautiful. the rooms are beautiful. the beach is beautiful. the serenity of the place is a bit disarming. there is a laidbackness to the staff as well. you don't see them hovering around all over the place, but they are easy to find when you need them. and they are generally quite pleasing to deal with. the only drawback we found about his place is that it is far from negombo. so if you want to do some souvenir shopping and so on, you will have to ask them to get you a tuk-tuk, which cost us about rs.800 each way, and took about 30-40 minutes, unless you have a driver and car of course. this also meant that there are really no options for dinner around here except for the food served at the hotel. its somewhat on the expensive side. for a sri-lankan dinner spread with 3 curries and desert and juice. and the food was ok, not great. it would have been nice to explore other places for food.
