A New Definition to 5 Star Service”

The Property, the Pool, the Staff

137 Pillars property is unlike any place I have stayed (and we travel regularly) - the property is beautiful, peaceful, and a retreat from the world. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and most impressive is that no detail was too small or went overlooked. Nat, the food and beverage manager, took time to greet us during our first breakfast, gave us some good local spots to visit, taught us how to properly say please, thank you, and bargain for the night/weekend market, and was genuinely interested in how we were enjoying our stay and doing anything to help us. On the two mornings we left the hotel before breakfast began (6:30am), and including the morning we left for the airport, he arranged boxed breakfasts with fresh fruit, croissants, breakfast sandwiches, and juice for us to take with us. His personal attention to detail and service was phenomenal and the breakfast was great. The entire staff was terrific and very helpful and friendly, with the exception of the one gentleman who was at the front desk the night we arrived and at the front desk again the morning we left. He was curt and borderline rude - the opposite of every other staff person at 137 pillars. The housekeeping staff checked on the room throughout the day to replace waters, coffee, etc. One morning we had washed a few items in the bathtub to get some stains out and hung them to dry. When we came back, the clothes were hung neatly on a drying rack on our balcony and were dry. It is just another illustration of the staff going the extra mile to think of everything and take care of their guests in a manner I haven't experienced at any other hotel. I can not say enough about how wonderful the staff was. The next time we come to SE Asia, I will go out of my way to add a few days onto our trip to go back to Chiang Mai - for the sole purpose of staying at 137 Pillars. Thank you to the amazing staff for such a phenomenal stay.

Modern Elegance and most comfortable bed ever”

Very clean, modern style with comfortable beds

We kind of went out on a limb with 137 Pillars House because there were only a couple reviews for it on Tripadvisor. How pleased we were! Since we were on Honeymoon, they upgraded us to one of their master suites, which was very nice. We stayed at two other hotels on our honeymoon (Shangri La Bangkok and Imperial Adamas Phuket), and 137 Pillars was tied with the Shangri La for our favorite. What can I say? We loved 137! Some of the highlights: 1) Beautiful, modern elegance. A classic teak wood building next to modern grounds and a 30-foot vine wall and infinity pool make this hotel look very modern, yet classically elegant. 2) Very friendly and attentive staff. 3) Wonderful breakfast. They even had some boxed up and waiting for us when we left the hotel at 5 in the morning one day. 4) Very nice rooms, and ABSOLUTELY THE MOST COMFORTABLE BED we slept on during our trip, and maybe in our lives. 5) Our room had a nice ipod dock and music playing when we arrived. Seems like a little thing, but it was very nice. There were also lots of interesting books in the room for us to read. Con: 1) Location- it's on the far side of the river and a bit of a drive to down town. Most tuk-tuks would accept 100 baht ($3 USD), which is no big deal, but a lot of drivers didn't now the hotel when you asked them to take you there. 2) Exercise room left a little to be desired.

Absolute perfection!”

The traditional style and wonderful staff are the keys to the success of this beautiful hotel!

137 pillars house is an absolute gem! although outside the old town, this is actually a benefit because you are able to escape the noise and tourist hordes. the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, from the original "pillars house" that is now the restaurant and other public rooms to the suites. the tranquil garden grounds are a welcome respite. the rooms (in my case raja brooke suite) are absolute perfection. thy are gorgeous, large (with three separate areas - bedroom, large dressing room, bathroom area) and they have thought of absolutely every detail. the decor is perfect, everything is comfortable, the bathroom is like a spa with huge claw-foot tub, marble indoor shower and outdoor shower in a garden-like setting. the pool with its 'green wall' is stunning (if a little cool because it doesn't get that much direct light). each suite has a beautiful outdoor terrace from where you can hear the piano player in the pillars house lounge every evening. the breakfast buffet is the best i saw in thailand and the dinner i ordered to my room was one evening was excellent. what makes this hotel a true gem, however, is the staff. they are wonderful, friendly, attentive and know what you need before you do. i found that even some very nice hotels in thailand had kind of clueless staff but at this hotel, they were perfect! my only wish is that i could have stayed longer!

Inspiring hideaway with prime location”

We loved the spacious suites with outdoor shower and generous seating plus the comfiest beds ever; stunning green wall by the pool; ambiance of heritage luxe with live piano sounds in the evenings

It was a short three night stay at this fantastic boutique hotel and from the very arrival we felt the service will not disappoint us. We were staying on the first floor overlooking the lawn and the swimming pool, as well as the famous 137 Pillars House where in the evening, charming piano music was spilling out and reaching us at the veranda. The suites are spacious with large walk-in closet combined with a gorgeous bathroom with a free standing bathtub and a choice of in-door and outdoor shower. We loved the iPod dock with an iPod mini plugged into a Yamaha hi-fi with great selection of ambient music. Pool gives enough room for doing few laps and overall serene atmosphere is further enhanced by a stunning green wall. Breakfast buffet was a delicious treat although, we could never have enough fresh, local, tropical fruit. Freshly made to order eggs as you like them and waffles were a sweet consolation. Coconut yoghurts and traditional Thai coconut desserts wrapped in pandan/banana leaves are a must try! At one of the two restaurants, we tried some of the recommended dishes from the Thai selection for dinner on the first night and found all the dishes very flavorful. With only 30 carefully restored suites the hotel is an absolute gem when it comes to privacy…BUT a boutique hotel targeting Guests seeking for a unique hotel experience and paying extra premium for just that should not be allowing families with kids under certain age. Our stay was somewhat spoiled by the young couple blissfully ignorant of other people, with a one-year old toddler. Having said that, we would love to return to 137 Pillars for a longer stay to linger longer, hopefully with no crying babies around this time!

Spacious room with nice interior”

Quiet, nice decoration, and helpful staff

We are truly satisfied with our stay at 137 Pillars House. The room that we stayed in is Rajah Brooke Suite type which is big enough for two people. The bathroom are equipped with bathtubs, indoor and outdoor showers, two sinks as well as Panpuri amenities. The breakfast provided at the hotel is very delicious. You can choose from Western-style to Thai-style breakfast menu, and there's also small buffet line offered. 137 Pillars House will definitely be the top of my list on my next trip to Chiang Mai.

My home in Asia! Unequaled Everything!!”

There are no 3 best things. Everything is flawles, Perfection!

This is my 3rd stay at the 137 Pillars this year (and I just booked another week in November). The first stay was unimaginably wonderful, and It just keeps getting better. The rooms are large, extremely comfortable, and include everything you could possibly need. There is an atrium off the bathroom with an outdoor rain shower that is unique (I never used the indoor rain shower). The porch has a very comfortable day bed and overlooks the garden and pool that is the center of the hotel. I love the staff. They are remarkably friendly, attentive, and professional. Even when the hotel is full they make me feel like the only guest. The grounds are beautifully kept and provide a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing atmosphere. The breakfast buffet has a huge variety of fresh fruits, cereals, egg dishes, pastries, Etc. Chiang Mai is a beautiful city with a good variety of interesting things to do and see, but I would recommend you go just to experience The 137 Pillars. See you there!!!

Amazing ambiance & service”

beautiful rooms, great food, fantastic service

I really enjoyed my stay at 137 Pillars. From the moment of arrival until the moment I left I found the staff to be very professional, courteous and helpful. They provided great suggestions and helped to organize some great trips. The hotel is a great oasis in Chiang Mai, allowing you to fully enjoy and experience the city which is close and easy to access and to then return to a calming and relaxing environment incuding great verandas and gardened grounds and a fabulous pool area and spa. One great thing about the rooms (and there ar many) is the bed! Most beds in Thailand are very (!) firm ... the beds at 137 Pillars are still very supportive but have a great feather bed on top allow for a plusher feel (similar to high end firm pillow topped mattresses in the US). Also fabulous is the soaking tub!

Five star luxury and the comfort of home!”

Beautiful spacious suites in a lush garden setting, with an incredibly helpful and friendly staff.

the most wonderful hotel experience i have ever had. the 137 pillars is not a 5 star hotel, it is a 10 home experience. there was no part of my stay that was less than perfect. the beautiful spacious suite with all the amenities was extremely comfortable. the small garden off the bathroom with the outdoor shower was unique (i never used the indoor shower). the staff was incredibly helpful and the smiles were genuine. i was walking back to the hotel one evening (i was 4-5 kilometers away) when one off the front desk staff recognized me and stopped to offer me a ride. never had that kind of service before. i enjoyed chiang mai, but would consider returning just experience the 137 pillars again.

Stunning step into colonial history ”

Everything! Food, service, rooms, location

The 137 Pillars is a delightful place to stay. Immerse yourself in the stories of Chiang Mai of old and the early days of the East Borneo Company. Everything about the place is perfect. We went there to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary and were really impressed with every detail of our visit. The stunning suites, delicious Thai and European food, cocktails at sunset on the lawn, the lap pool and even a small museum showing you artefacts of the restoration of the house. We savoured every moment. If you love history, and appreciate great design, the 137 Pillars is not to be missed.

Nearly Perfect”

low key luxury, a high degree of privacy, great use of the space and landscaping to make it seem larger than it was, professional but friendly staff

I am usually highly critical of hotels, but I have amost no negative comments about our stay at 137 Pillars. If I were to be very picky, I would say the breakfast buffet selection is one star off of stellar - especially in the selection of fruits, which one would expect to be broad and exotic. The items to order on the menu, however, were tasty and imaginative. The other slightly negative (more surprising than negative) was the very expensive cost of the taxi transfer from/to the airport, which were so much higher than taking comfortable available alternatives. It seemed like an odd place to put high charges, when the rest of the extras at the hotel were either very reasonable or included - the complimentary mini bar and cofee machine were much appreciated, for example. Otherwise, I can only say that this is a magnificant property, and we enjoyed our stay immensely. One last "complaint": the room and facilities were so lovely we had to force ourselves to go and see anything in Chiang Mai!

Unable to reasonably fault anything ... at all”

Peaceful, Staff, Food

Suggest to rename hotel to 137 Heaven. Peaceful, peaceful, peaceful. We booked the pool villa and although probably not the best pool the rest of the accommodation was simply divine. The staff were unbelievably attentive and observant, particularly the personal butler. The food at the restaurant was the best we have eaten in Thailand. I know 137 Pillars isn't the cheapest place in Thailand and you should expect more if you pay more but how often are you disappointed because your expectations have not been met? On this occasion and for our expectation levels (which we consider to be reasonable) we can not fault the staff or the standard of the hotel for completely meeting and surpassing our expectations. Chiang Mai was lovely, but once you've done it, you've done it ... too much else to see, too little time to do it!

Service, cleanliness, location, property, suites are all amazing. Our suite was beautiful and extremely comfortable. The rooms are so spacious. The bathroom has an indoor and outdoor shower with a beautiful Victorian tub. The amenities they provided smelled so good and a new one was replaced every single day we were there. Very peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was exceptional and our Butler Pui was attentive, thoughtful and took care of all our needs effortlessly. Jack Bain’s bar was our happy hour ritual before heading out for the evening. Everything about Chiangmai during this trip was made memorable beginning with our stay at 137 Pillars House. Too many to list. The most amazing 5+ star boutique hotel we have ever been to.

I travel regularly on business, and am lucky enough to stay at some of the finest hotels in numerous countries. 137 Pillars House is easily the finest boutique hotel I have experienced. Frankly, they are better than most, if not all, of the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Hyatt, and Four Seasons I have stayed at. The staff is pleasant, knowledgeable, and friendly. The rooms are clean, well appointed, and offer nice privacy as well as pleasant views.

We would definitely want to stay here again”

We stayed in the Rajah Brooke Suite. It looked a little small at first, but has a large washroom and wardrobe area with an adjoining bath, toilet, shower and a large outdoor shower area. Really nice room with a great little stereo system to play music. The actual house which the suites are built around is a treat. It's a wonderful place to relax and read a book or something. There is lovely little bar and restaurant area. All the staff we encountered were courteous and helpful. The breakfast has something for everyone, although for the price you pay, I would have hoped for slightly better quality, but overall a good breakfast. The restaurant food is okay, but a bit overpriced. Room service menu was good. The only grumble, and this is not any fault of 137 Pillars, would be a minority of the guests. Talking so loud everyone knows what they done yesterday and plan to do tomorrow and some playing loud videos on their phones over breakfast. Maybe this wouldn’t bother most people, but
