Gangehi Island Resort

"We really appreciated our stay at the resort, for our 5th wedding anniversary (without the kids!). The place is really beautiful, and a typical "paradise island" with amazing colourful views (white sand, green water, blue sky). We booked the cheapest room on Agoda and were very lucky to be upgraded to a garden view bungalow when we checked in! The food was really good, with a decent variety, despite the remote location of the island (everything is imported). If needed, there is wi-fi at the main entrance and the main bar (on the water). We did 3 dives: after the check dive, the 2 other dives were amazing (manta ray, turtle, shark, lobster, etc.). Yoga class and snorkeling are organized once a day (free). DVD player (with screen) was available at the reception desk (no TV in the rooms), but I don't know how many of these they have. Maldives are very expensive and we wanted to "limit the damages" wherever possible, but you don't have a choice once you chose your resort. The seaplane is a great experience, but it costs $420 per person for 30 minutes from Male to the resort (and back), and we had to wait for 3h at Male airport. We would probably chose a resort closer to Male airport for a speedboat transfer (north or south Male atolls) if we come back - but we are very happy to have experienced the seaplane once. The buffet lunch/diner are a bit expensive (30/40 euros each; or 55 euros for both, the same day), but you can order a snack at the bar for lunch (around 10 euros) and a great a la carte dinner (around 20 euros). Maybe it's possible to book full pension on Agoda (?). The dive centre is expensive too, around 75 euros per dive with equipment and insurance (but the dive masters are super friendly and professional, and the dives are great). The corals were reproducing, and there was a strong "sea smell" and a red colour floating here and there on the sea towards the end of the stay (apparently the dives are better, but I'm glad we didn't have it when we arrived). "It was amazing I must say. I would recommend anyone to go, if you're looking for a place for your honeymoon or a family trip, W retreat & Spa is the place you're looking for. The food there was amazing? Fresh, great quality and most importantly, there are a wide variety of food for you to choose from. The staffs were very friendly and always welcoming, they made me feel like I was a part of their family on the hotel. They were willing to do whatever it takes for us to feel comfortable and enjoy our stay. While I was there, the aircon in my room wasn't working as well as it should, I informed the counter and they immediately sent for a staff to fix it. He took the entire day and night to fix it, making sure I was happy and comfortable with the result. I was really impressed by this incident. Lastly, the hotel is filled with activities for you to choose from. I love this quality the most as I am an active person, and this is one of the best places I would recommend for anyone to go. "

Nika Island Resort

"We had 12 fantastic days at one of the nice deluxe villas on the island. Cleaning twice a day, new towels for beach and bathroom every day. One bedroom, a separate living room, a big bathroom with shower both inside and outside, and a lovely private beach. We were snorkelig at the reef outside the beach every day, among all kinds of fish. The life underwater was amazing to see, if I could, I still would have been snorkelig around there. :) It was some crabs at the beach and geckos at the villa, but that did not bother us at all. They ran away as soon as you looked at them. The staff at Nika were very friendly, helped us whenever we needed, and the food there was very good! One of the days we went to the desert island close to Nika for a romantic dinner. We had the same friendly waiter as the rest of the days. The island were beautiful, it was amazing to see the sunset from there. A unique evening for us. It is many things to do at Nika. They have canoes for rent, a diving center, gym, a spa, a souvernir shop and a bar with good drinks and food. Here they also have evenings with films etc. The Wi-fi at the Island was not the best, but for free, and we manage to do what we needed (just take some longer time). I can recommend Nika Island Spa and Resort for everyone who wants to go to the Maldives. A lovely place! "

Holiday Village Retreat

"This is very nice guesthouse in a small island. The island has nice white sanded, clean bikini beach (3-4 mins from the guesthouse) and nice house reef with lots of fishes. The guesthouse is nearly new, provide good food, nice portions and staff are very kind and helpful. Highly recommandable. Only downside is maybe the internet is pretty slow, but I guess it is the issue of the net provider. Also the guesthouse provides lot of programmes (fishing, dolphin watch, manta watch, sand bank tour etc.) with reasonable prices. Thank you Bary and his team to meke our stay unforgettable."

"We stayed at the resort for 4 nights and wish it could have been 50. Our room was a water villa and it was set upon a beautiful blue lagoon. The diving and snorkelling is superb - Rashdoo Divers runs dive safaris to Ari atoll when you get tired of the local dive sites. I would highly recommend the resort."

New Moon Village

"Me and my wife stayed at New Moon Village for the trip we organized for our first wedding anniversary. We have travelled around the world quite a bit and stayed in different 5 star resorts and nice guest houses, but we have never seen a great place like this before... The staff were so hands on and helpful and really made our stay just awesome. A wonderful place to stay for your budget as well, because the guest house itself is great for the price and the guys there will help to make your trip memorable by organizing fishing and snorkeling trips, barbecues, jet ski rides and excursions with a great deal and understanding that tourists don't want to overpay. Breakfast is great and right next door is a new Thai restaurant that were just opened (food is delicious!). And one thing you will definitely love is the beach! Its just beautiful with white sand and light blue water (and its clean!). You will be provided with beach towel, beach umbrellas and chairs to lie down and enjoy incredible view. You can save your time and stop searching for places because this one here You will love. Definitely would recommend New Moon Village to all our friends, big time! "

Kandolhu Maldives
Alifu Alifu Atoll,Alifu Alifu Atoll - View on map
"Pros: 1. Remoteness. The whole point of a getaway to Maldives is to enjoy the peace & serenity around you. We laid on the walkway watching stars all night. Caught a few shootings stars. 2. Quality & cleanliness. We stayed in 211 which was the best water villa with pool. 3. Stylish interior with Eubiq electrical points & free use of in-villa iPad. 4. Staff were very friendly and helpful. 5. Food variety is excellent with 4 or 5 restaurants on the island. Banzai is a must-try (book the moment you arrive in order to avoid disappointment). 6. House reef on the fringe. Catching sight of turtles is almost guaranteed. Saw 2 turtles on different occasions. Cons: 1. They should invest in regular pest control if not done so. There were mosquitoes on the main island and giant ants in the villa. Was bitten so many times in the restaurant, sports centre and reception. 2. You won't be able to lock your maindoor from inside the room. And it didn't help that my housekeeper didn't have the courtesy to knock on my door before entering. It happened twice and I had to call the front desk to lodge a complain about it. I have never come across any hotel staff who never knocked in my entire life - and it had to happen in a 5-star resort in Maldives. 3. There were plenty of nice house reef around the island. However much was also damaged and dead near the villa sides. 4. Wifi reception was strong but connection was very bad. You could hardly surf the net or update your Facebook. But given its remoteness, you can't really fault them for this. Kandolhu is a must-go if you wanna escape over-crowded and commercialized resorts. Facilities are brand new e.g. library, snorkeling equipment & in-villa amenities. There were also 6 resident baby sharks that stay close to shore."
