Very comfortable ryokan in a very abeautiful place”
My trip in Nikko was very impressive. Annex Turtle Hotori-An Ryokan is a beautiful hotel with traditional Japanese room in a green zone with view on the mountain river and only 2 min by foot to Kanmangafuchi (park with Buddah statues). I really relaxed in my room, stuff recommended me 2 good restaurants. After energetic day I had a rest in small hotel onsen. Hotel lobby has opened for guest and you can take a cup of tea there. Price for room is quite expensive, however I am happy to stay in this hotel. I was a nice part of my journey. Highly recommend this hotel. One negative thing is only strange smell of dampness in bathroom. Everything else is ok. P.S. I did not order dinner in hotel so I can not say anything about hotel cuisine.

Relaxing stay in Nikko”
Hotori-an was great! Stayed there over the weekend and didn't really know what to expect since it was a 1 star inn. We were pleasantly surprised and would come back here again! The location was great! It was a nice 15 minute walk by the river to the steps to go to the shrines. The staff was great and attentive. The bath house was a plus. You pretty much have a private onsen with a river view - so relaxing. The only downside is that it is not near a lot of food options - there are 2 restaurants nearby that they recommend but if you want to check out more food options you'll have to walk 20-30 minutes to the main drag and most places shut down early. We didn't mind the walk as it was a nice way to explore Nikko at night. Overall, this place is great and really under-rated. We'll be back here the next time we're in Nikko.

Good value and friendly staff”
This is a (modified) traditional ryokan (Japanese inn). You wear shoes in the hotel common area but not in your room, which has traditional Japanese floor bedding. It was comfortable and clean, though not large, with ample bedding. There is a traditional Japanese onsen (public bath) but it's not exactly 'public' because there is only one - usually there's a men's and a women's bath. I took one dip (it was fine), but it's on a first-come, first-served basis and they ask you to limit to 20 minutes, which is also fine for me, anyway. Breakfast was a very good value at 1000 yen ($10) - heaps of wonderful fresh fruit, excellent toast, choice of coffee/tea/juice/boiled egg. However, it is limited to sittings at 8 and 8:30 which may not work if you need an early start. LOCATION: Good side: you are close to some top attractions in Nikko, especially the temple complex, and a nice venue if you just like a solitary walk down a pedestrian pathway along the river with rows of Buddha statues as company (my favorite memory from Nikko!). Bad side: it's pretty far (maybe 15 minutes) by taxi, which will run about 1300 yen. The bus (270 yen, I think) comes to within the last 1/2 km but you'll need to keep asking directions because the maps aren't very detailed. I took the bus to the hotel and a taxi back to the station.

Quaint and wonderful Inn”
The Turtle Annex is a sweer surprise, We got the japanese traditional room and it was the most comfortable sleep we had in a week. It is so relaxing in this hotel because it is secluded (but not hard to find) and there's a stream at the back, making you feel like you're really close to nature. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the location is actually quite near (just 5 minutes walk) to the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, one of the highlights of any trip to Nikko. There a couple of convenience stores just 15 minutes walk to the main road, and there are countless vending machines in the area too should you need to not stray far to buy beer, coffee or cola. wonderful little hotel. i highly recommend it!

Wonderful Hotel in Nikko”
The best feature is the spa. I think it's the only hotel with an attached spa within Nikko town. The location is walking distance to the Shrine complex, shops and restaurants but is still surrounded by serene woods and a nice stream. The rooms are quite big. We had two rooms: a family room for four and a twin room. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Nikko.

Nice Stay in Nikko for a Decent Price”
Really enjoyed this hotel, stayed here with my Japanese GF on the Saturday night on Bon Odori (one of the biggest Japanese holidays) for about $160 US (2 person). The nicer hotels in the Nikko area were $500-$900 this night, so I was happy to find this hotel for this price. The location is great in my opinion. It is a nice walk through some neighborhoods and then across a bridge of a tranquil river with fisherman fishing for trout. The best aspects of this hotel is that the river basically separates Nikko in half, on the other side is the Nikko with the World Heritage sites packed with tour buses, on this side it's completely quiet. Also, the gorge with the hundreds of Budda's is about 1 5 minute walk aways. My GF and I bought some Asahi's at the conveni and took them down to the river and had a view of 3 separate waterfalls all to our selves for an hour, a great change of pace from walking around the Nikko temples with hundreds of tourists taking photos. Nikko remains a traditional Japanese vacation spot with myriad Western Tourists, the mainland Chinese haven't invaded (yet) so get there and enjoy while it still lasts before ends up like Kyoto :( NOTE: print out a map or have Google Maps on your phone b/c this hotel would be extremely hard to find without GPS.

Exceptional”
Very nice couple managing the annex turtle and the turtle inn just 3 min walking away from each other. The hot spa overlooking the forest is amazing. The location is very good. Only 8 min walking from the bus stop. Then you will need 45 min to 70 min by bus to reach the hiking trails.

Good, cozy place - worth the walk”
It's not super close to most of the major sights in Nikko (something to factor), but the hotel is really clean, cozy (the onsen is connected to a nice garden view and the rooms are the same size you'd get with hotels - even bigger in some cases), and worth the money. If you like walking (like me), the abyss is about 10 minutes on foot and the temples and Shinkyo bridge are about 15-20 minutes away. If taking the bus, get on/off BUS STOP NO. 9 (where the Lawson is).

Lovely location & vibe”
About 10-15 minute walk to major Nikko attractions Quiet and beautiful location beside river Highly recommend paying for breakfast Incredibly helpful staff. Wished we could have stayed longer If leaving Nikko early (before 7.30) note taxis not easy to get First bus to JR railway a little after 6am and about 20 minute walk with bags

Nice private onsen”
Very nice place to stay if you are in Nikko. It has a private onsen with a river view. Room was prefect for group of 4 and it has private bathroom with shower and bath. Location is about 2.4 km away from the station, but if you like to walk and view city it is. Perfect. Closely located to shrines and bus stop for the lake area.

Good location for Kanmangafuchi walk”
Annex turtle is located in the good location for taking Kanmangafuchi walk which I strongly recommend if you stay overnight in Nikko. You can explore this area in the morning when it’s still not crowded. The lady who take care us during our stay is informative and speak English. Our family booked 2 rooms for 5 persons that night. It would be better if she warn us about the bad diesel smell in one of our booked room before we faced it by ourselves and asked to return that room. Firstly she ask us to pay for that room even tho we just stay in there only 10 mins before told her we can’t stand that smell (she informed later that it comes from leaked heater last week). But we got refund from her after we insisted that it not our fault that the room smell too bad no one can tolerate and we move to stay in the same room instead. Other than that everything is fine. This place has private onsen but you have to wait until it vacant to use. The breakfast(extra pay) is filling with breads+egg+fruits.

Good choice!”
It was our good choice in Nikko so far. The location is right next to the river and Thousands Buddha attraction. What we love from the hotel is a private "onsen" which we enjoy the most during our trip, besides, the owner is super nice, gentle and helful. We highly recommend.

good experience, recommended”
loved the clean comfortable ryokan room as it is by a stream and we can hear the water flowing. heater is provided and there's clear instructions on usage. the 'spa' is similar to a hot tub in onsen style, provides the private usage which is awesome. the lobby and dining area set up is warm and inviting. staff are friendly and helpful. while it is a distance to walk from the bus stop (around 10mins), instructions on the website is clear and we have no difficulty locating the hotel.

Excellent”
This ryokan is really close to nature and must see place "Kamangafuchi Abyss" [the Buddhist temple with the stone preacher near the river] and the owner is very friendly and helpful and if you like the japanese ceramic there're also small shop sell handmade ceramic products in this ryokan. But one thing I'd like to inform the owner is the air condition in the room 203 that I've stay is so loud may be you have to fix it.

Fine choice for Nikko”
Stayed for two nights in Nikko. Good value but nothing exceptional. Futon was under padded compared to other places I've stayed I'm Japan. Location is within easy walking distanced of main sites but a hike from train station. Definitely take a cab to and from the train station. Vies of river from room was great.

Exceptional”
This is a really good place to stay at for its price. You can get breakfast included by paying a bit extra. I think 1000yen per day. Just ask the staff when you check in. Their breakfast is good and health. You get fruits, toasted bread with butter, and a boiled egg. With drinks, you can choose coffee, black tea, orange juice, water, green tea, and whatever tea they have available. Location is also excellent being quite close to the temples. The staff speak really good english. They also have a small onsen bath which people take turns in (no more than 30min) each. You get your own bathroom and a tatami room. On my way here, I actually dropped my passport on the bus, and they helped me get it back by calling the authorities who eventually found it and told me where to pick it up. Really nice people working here.

Great comfort”
The hotel is beside the river, at a quiet environment. The facilities are very good, with yukata for in-house wear, a private onsen facility is available for use and the staff is very friendly. The location is near to the abyss and the bakejizo. The location is a about 10-15 minutes walk from the the Lawson bus stop #9. If breakfast is not included, it is available for an additional fee of 1000yen. We truly enjoyed the stay there and the sleep in the futon was excellent !

Relaxing, quiet stay in the mountains”
Nice place. I think the photos are actually not as nice as the place. It's very quiet. Good breakfast. Walk out the door and you are on a trail. Great stone buddhas (70+) line the river bank. Quiet little town, not too much in terms of restaurants, but we were there in early April. There is a hot tub area for all, but it is private, so all you have to do is find it vacant, turn the sign to occupied and you have the place to yourself. It is a nice glassed in area, with hot water flowing in. You can open the sliders for cool air coming in from the river below. Quiet idyllic!

Nice relaxing place to stay”
I really found my stay here to be relaxing and enjoyable. My only recommendation is to improve upon the breakfast option that is available. Possibly allow for an option that is more Japanese or has less fruit and bread with more protein

It’s a fantastic place to stay, close to transport and attractions. ”
The staff is great, very friendly and helpful, always willing to help. The hotel and rooms are extremely clean and the rooms are cleaned daily. The private onzen is a luxury to have and eventhough it is shared by all the guests, you can always find plenty of time to use it. The dinning room is a welcoming place where to have a coffee or some complimentary green tea. The location is peaceful and 10 minutes away from the bus stop and shop. I totally recomend the experience here.
