Located at the far end of the island, Ao Pakarang is a great choice for visitors seeking total peace and quiet. Hotels line a slight curve with gentle hills rising from a rocky base at either end. The area is connected to the rest of the island by hilly roads, and the best way for visitors to explore more of Samet is to rent a scooter or quad-bike from the town centre.
Ao Pakarang means 'Coral Bay' in Thai, and the area boasts some of the island’s best snorkeling, diving and canoeing in its clear blue waters. Lush tropical palms shade unspoiled beaches and provide sanctuary to a number of rare birds, including the Hornbill.
Naturally shielded from over-development by its secluded location, Ao Pakarang is a great place to experience the traditional lifestyle of the island’s residents. A number of seafood restaurants provide excellent fresh dishes at reasonable prices, and hotel restaurants offer sea-view al-fresco dining. Most hotels have Thai massage and spa facilities onsite.
Speed-boat transfers to the mainland are by far the fastest and most comfortable way to reach the island, and take just 17 minutes. The mainland pier, Ban Phe, is a 2.5-hour drive to Bangkok, and taxis are available on arrival.
