THE place to stay in Kyoto”
APA Kyoto-Gion is WONDERFUL. The staff are super friendly. The rooms are amazingly clean and the perfect size for single travelers. The location is to die for. Food and shops line the main road just outside the door, Gion is just around the corner on the left, and Yasaka shrine is right across the street on the left. When you arrive for check in the staff is very polite and quick to get everything sorted. I was given a rewards card (absolutely FREE) to use for future stays with any of the APA hotels in Japan and a coupon for a free one-hour extension to be used at any APA hotel in the next year or so. I will DEFINITELY make this my go to place for future Japan travel!
My wife and I traveled to Kyoto from Osaka. We took the Hankyu Line over JR because the terminal stop at Kawaramachi was just a 10-minute walk to the hotel in Gion, near the Yasaka Shrine. This was the perfect location for us as we explored the eastern side of Kyoto from the Ginkakuji to Kiyomizu and further south to Byodo-in and Fushimi Inari. The hotel room was small but comfortable and well designed. If you're traveling with large suitcases, it might be too tight. Check-in/out was quick and easy, having pre-paid thru Agoda. The front desk is on the second floor, and we bypassed it most of the time during our four-night stay. So we didn't interact much with staff, but had no needs or complaints. Many top sites are within walking distance, and several nearby buses take you everywhere else. This is a colorful part of Kyoto, where dozens of visitors rent yukata (summer kimono) to stroll the streets, and you can still catch a rare Geisha or Maiko going to or fro.
Best Kyoto location”
Great hotel. We stayed at another place during our stay in Kyoto (slightly south of Kyoto Imperial Gardens), but this APA hotel, located in the heart of the Gion district, was way better. 10/10!
Excellent location in the heart of Gion”
kyoto gion hotel is located in shijo-dori very close to the shrine. which is a prime location to walk to many temples and to spot geisha. if you walk shijo-dori towards the downtown area you get to two streets on the right hand side immediately after the river which are excellent for restaurants, izakaya and pubs. its also packed with girls bars if thats your thing. the reception is open 24/7 and there is internet in the rooms. the rooms are a tad small, but its manageable. the aircondition was working well and kept the room at a nice temperature.
Amazing bed in great room with fantistic location ”
Had a great stay. The concierge helped us with finding a geisha show and tea ceremony. It was probably THE most comfortable bed I have ever stayed in and very roomy for an Asian hotel room. The location is perfect, very close to bus and metro line as well as one of the big attractions of Kyoto, a temple garden thing that was really cool and the price was the best bang for my buck I had during my entire Japan vacation. Highly recommend, especially if you are looking to stay in the Gion district which was really beautiful.
Excellent location! In the heart of Gion, with so much beauty and so many temples and shrines in easy walking distance. Area is also full of restaurants and a 10 min walk to downtown with endless options. Easy access to local transportation. Taxi from Kyoto station is about 1400 Yen. Room was very clean, comfortable, and quiet. In a twin room, one bed gave a very soft mattress the other was very firm. I had getting little interaction with staff, but it was good. Starbucks on the first floor was nice. I stayed here 7 nights and would absolutely stay here again in the he future.
Review of our stay at APA Hotel Kyoto-Gion”
This is the first, among the 4, APA hotel we've stayed during our Japan trip. We were surprised by the cleanliness of the room and the location. Its really in the heart of Gion and the cleaners do clean the room on the daily basis. All toiletries were also replenished in the process. The size of the room is also reasonable. Overall, its really value for money.
Best choice in kyoto”
It's more like 4* hotel. Best location in gion, starbucks on a side, bus stop with buses to kyoto station 30m away from the hotel. Many small supermatkets around, lots of souvenir shops and small boutiques. Hotel has beautiful rooms, love the wallpaper!, english tv channel, fridge etc you couldnt ask for more. 100% will stay there when visiting kyoto again.
Fantastic location in Gion and the staff were friendly and helpful! However, this is very obviously an older hotel and though I had a no smoking room there was a definite smell of stale smoke at all times.. on with the A.C No self service laundry facilities onsite which was a little inconvenient. A coin laundry is located a couple of blocks down but required my limited Japanese to read the signage and actually locate it.. I would recommend and stay here again myself purely based on friendly staff and great location, just aware that the facilities are more dated than other APA hotels I have stayed in.
Great location, great room, above Starbucks”
this was the best hotel we stayed during our 2-week vacation in japan. the location around this hotel (gion) is the best place to experience the kyoto culture. it is also very near to all the sightseeing spots in higashiyama. there are 3 different subway lines which we can choose depending on where we're going and it's walking distance. it's also near to takashimaya. we can see geishas walking about in the area.
Excellent Location to explore Kyoto”
perfect location to explore the streets of Kyoto. We went dessert eating whenever we could. The hotel is close to several bus stops and Kyoto is indeed better explored by buses rather than subway. During our first trip we stayed at Kyoto station area, but find that with this second trip, Gion is a much better choice.
Great location and represent well the city”
Cant explain enough that hotel location is all matter in Kyoto, especially when the travel is about understanding the culture. In Gion, both night and day, the charm of Kyoto is all in the air. Though the hotel is small, luckily with the room not facing the street made staying and resting in this hotel was very comfortable. The staff also very helpful.
Right in the middle of everything”
The hotel is centrally located. During day time there are many places to visit, and during night time there are more bars and restaurant than you can handle. The room was a good size, not really large, but larger than usual. This made it more comfortable. The bed is great, good internet connection, but the best it is quiet. Although it looking directly on a busy street, it is very quiet in the room. And, clean. 3 different restaurants in the building, if you don't feel like moving a lot. The staff is friendly, and knowledgeable. you actually get good help if you ask. And, the price is reasonable. The only problem was that the stay was too short. There is too much to be seen and done in Kyoto
Staff were wonderful, the room was very clean and the beds very comfortable after a long day traipsing around Kyoto's streets. The hotel is just down the road from one of the many shrines and also from the Ponto-cho district, which is very historical and amazing to see many women dressed as geisha's. Vending machine on our floor and ice available on the floor below. Air con lovely and cool in the 31 degrees that we experienced. The APA was integral to our holiday enjoyment. Would recommend.
Perfect location! So close to tons of restaurants, coffee shops, bars within walking distance. Also close to metro! Loved the Gion area. We were able to walk to a couple different temples and shrines within 15-20 min of hotel. Room is small (typical in Japan) but clean and comfy bed. Pillows are very flat but we were able to get bigger ones on request. Breakfast was pretty good with Asian and Western options. Great value and would stay again!
Excellent location, small room though”
Pros: - location in a heart of Gion District - close to subway station and bus stop - breakfast available at the hotel Cons: - very small room (barely enough space to exist for 2 people, but that seems to be standard size in Japan - we had the same size room in Tokyo) - price ( that was Sakura season though and it is Japan after all)
All you need from a hotel”
Nice old hotel in the middle of gion, the location is wonderful, walking distance from many attractions and there's a bus stop located just next to the hotel. The room was small but very functional, with all the ameneties needed. we stayed with a 9 months old baby, the hotel didn't have a baby cot and anyway the room was too small to accomodate one, but we managed. There's WiFi in the room, but not all the time, not so sure why. there's a starbucks at the first floor, which is a great way to start the day. All in all, we were very pleased
Gion is a Good Location”
Good it was perfect for the festival which I wanted to see and located very close to Yasaka Shrine so easy to find your way back to the hotel. As Yasaka Shrine is a major land mark. The staff was friendly and knew when to leave their guests alone. Also with an APA member's card the check-in was quick and very easy. Not to mention I had a street view from the 5th floor of the hotel. Which came in handy for observing the parade of the festival.
I found out that I've made a mistake on the booking and booked smoking rooms instead of non smoking rooms. To my surprise, the front desk staff did everything within their capability to get us non smoking rooms. Not only did the front desk miss got us non smoking rooms but one of the rooms had an amazing view of the temple and mountains. It was gorgeous. I think that room was actually upgraded. Lodging in Kyoto is generally pricey. This hotel fitted our lower end budget. It was clean and not too far from the subway. There was a bus stop right outside the hotel. There is a cool walk alley with
Nice location and value for money”
Very convenience location and very close to attraction. Consider very cheap when you are at the heart of Gion District. Nice staff and hotel room very clean and updated. Highly recommended to traveler looking to stay close to Gion District .
