Fantastic for families”
Plantation Island is perfect for a family holiday with lots of stuff (mostly free) to do for kids as well as adults and in a beautiful location. It is however dedicated to family groups with kids and the whole resort is clearly set up for this. My husband and I travelled together with my parents (late-sixties) and our two kids (9 and 6yo) and it was perfect for our group. The kids really enjoyed the inflatable water park outside the buffet restaurant, the glasbottom canoes and the paddle boards as well as the kids pool with water slide also located next to the buffet restaurant. The rest of us enjoyed snorkelling on the vibrant reef just off the beach on the western side of the resort (snorkelling gear is free to loan). The water just off the beach is very clear and snorkelling around the beach is excellent. Food is expensive, as usual for Fiji, and what I would call OK. Nothing fancy but also not terrible. There are a couple of restaurants around the place offering a la carte dining, otherwise it is mainly targeted toward the buffet restaurant. Kids eat free at all dinner restaurants if accompanied by two paying adults and there is even a free, dedicated kids buffet (ours never ate there as they preferred to eat together with us). Staff are plentiful all over the resort and always happy to help. We stayed in pool rooms. The rooms were very large, but quite tired in appearance and cleaning could have been a bit better, but perfectly serviceable. Set back around the main pool, they are perfect if you think you will be spending a lot of time in and around the pool. We found that we preferred the beach and the smaller pool with a water slide near the centre of the resort. If/when we return I would probably opt for a garden bure over these rooms as they generally seemed better and were more scenic. If budget is not an issue and/or there are good deals on accommodation I would recommend the beachfront bures any day. They are situated on the west side of the resort facing out to the reef and the sea. Beachfront hotel rooms and studio ocean bures generally face toward the bay and while still very pretty, don’t have that unimpeded ocean view. Free wifi is only available in the main area of the resort and at the restaurants. It can be added to the rooms at cost but is quite pricy. Overall we had a fantastic stay and I would highly recommend Plantation Island to families travelling with children.
5 nights at Plantation”
Location is seriously impressive, wow. We were in the beachfront hotel style accomodation and it was brilliant, right on the beach so perfect for a quick dip any time of the day when the tide is high enough. Room was clean and big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. Recommend bringing some snacks and drinks from mainland as drinks are very expensive and happy hour is not that much of bargain. We got the breakfast and dinner option with no lunch but didn’t need it really as you’re busy doing things and we had some snacks if kids got hungry. We are at the buffet every night and it was good without being spectacular. Bula bikes were great and recommend them for the whole family, although I think they could be cheaper. We loved the location, getting the Malolo cat over was quick easy and efficient. We did the sand bank trip too and that was great for a snorkel.
Go elsewhere!”
Pros: Lots to do for kids, 4 pools, 3 playgrounds, awesome kids club, bike hire. It's a kids paradise! Cheap massages also although please note that the day spa is closed and they are operating from a guest room at the moment. Cons: Staff at reception were rude and unhelpful, they practically ignore you. Communication was horrendous. Restaurant booking system was over the top and a pain. We couldn't eat anywhere other than the buffet restaurant for the first 2 nights we got there (at a kid friendly time anyway) as everything was booked out. On top of booking for dinner, then make you come in each day to pick up a "booking slip" for dinner. You cannot collect these all at once so need to make the trip into the booking office each day to collect. The phone in our room didn't work so when we needed assistance with a sick child at 1am one night I was frantically googling a phone number to call from my mobile phone for reception to get help. I did mention to staff multiple times prior to this that our phone didn't work (to which they said a few rooms didn't have phones working). Buffet was very average but edible. We also were overcharged a meal on our bill and it took me half an hour of being interrogated by reception staff to remove an extra burger off one of our food bills (we were 2 adults, 1 child and had 4 meals on the bill so I didn't think I had to "prove" that we only ordered 3). We have been to Fiji multiple times and Plantation Island was the most disappointing.
Fantastic holiday destination for kids. Endless activities”
We had a fantastic stay. The staff are amazing and caring, and they all love kids! The rooms were decent, though had a bit of mould in ours. We stayed in a beach front hotel room and I recommend this due to the proximity to everything the island has to offer. We enjoyed all of the free activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkelling, sailing, tennis and more. The only negative thing I would say is the food is very average so bring snacks and don’t expect amazing food. I don’t eat meat but my husband said the steak at Black Coral was the best meal he had there. Overall the island is beautiful and the beach and water was perfection!
Excellent resort with great amenities”
Beautiful beach with snorkeling offshore. Water trampoline is great for the kids and the kids club is really fun for kids. Friendly staff, great a la carte restaurant and very clean rooms. Pools are warm and lots of lounge chairs.
