This hotel just off upper Queen Street is a real gem. Its fresh and clean with a modern decor in the bedroom and shower room. The staff are friendly and very professional. I booked online through Agoda and there were no problems when I arrived. Checkout time is 10am and there is a storage room to stow your bags if you need to catch a flight at a later time. There was an upgrade going-on in the hotel during the 6 days that I was there involving one of the lifts, but this was being carried out with no disruption to the guests as far as I could see. I only had 1 breakfast at the restaurant because there are so many other options for snacking and dining-out in this part of Auckland. The Continental breakfast was ok and reasonably priced. The hotel is about 1 minutes' walk from the Air Bus stop, so really convenient if you're flying in to Auckland. Its location just off upper Queen St, is close to the main bus routes running along Queen St and Karangahape Rd. Its about a 10min walk above the harbour and Britomart Station. From the hotel I could easily walk to Parnell, New Market, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby Rd, Auckland Uni, Auckland War Memorial Museum etc... The hotel building is an odd shape and the rooms are arranged around a central core....this meant no parallel walls in the bedroom... a bit disconcerting at first.. and meant that placement of the TV screen on the wall waat a bit of an angle to the viewer (but not a major problem). Value for money, this hotel would be hard to beat if you just need a place to sleep and shower.
Convenient and affordable”
This is the second time I have stayed at Ascotia off Queen. Everything runs smoothly at this place. Check-in is a breeze if you booked through the Agoda site. The room was clean and well-serviced each day. I slept soundly on a comfortable twin bed. I didn't use the hotel's restaurant as there are so many great eating places around Auckland. Its close to an Airport Bus drop-off/ pick-up stop. There is limited car parking. This isn't a hotel for lounging around in, but if you want an affordable, reliable and convenient base in the centre of Auckland city, then you couldn't do much better than this hotel.
High value in excellent location”
i`ve stayed at this same hotel when it was under different management and name, and it was mediocre. the new version under a new crew is greatly improved: my room was very comfortable , the bed was great, the view was interesting. rooms are small for the price, but better than singapore or tokyo. and in nz, where hotels tend to be very overpriced as in australia, i felt my room was as-good-as-possible cheap. this hotel is located just off queen street, the main artery in the auckland city center, on an unusual little cup-de-sac. basically quiet, but with noisy kids in the park during the day and the odd partiers at night passing by - it`s surrounded by universities. the windows were good at shutting out noise. the renovations are ongoing and one elevator was being replaced and the remaining unit was old and shakey. i didn`t hear any construction noise at all. they have a small parking lot which was extremely useful for me, but it was 25$/24hr. the staff were really professional and helpful and obviously making an effort. the wifi, 5$/24hr, was decently fast in my 5f room. the airbus airport shuttel stops less than 100m from the lobby. lots of small restaurants and shops open late very near the hotel. very easy to wander down to the waterfront of the cbd. i would definitely stay here again: i think this hotel will continue to improve in 2013.
Well situated hotel close to city centre.”
We wanted a hotel to stay at on arrival in Auckland from England. We were looking for a hotel that was reasonably priced, with good transport links to and from the airport, and also close enough to the city centre to mean that we didn't have to take public transport. Ascotia filled all of those purposes. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Although the room wasn't huge, it was perfectly acceptable. Overall, the hotel was just right for our requirements.
My partner & stayed for 5 nights. We chose this Hotel for its proximity to City and the very reasonable price. Our room, though smallish, was spotlessly clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There can be a little noise during the night from Queen St, though we contributed to that by having the windows open rather than using the Aircon. Ascotia is also very handy to transport options (2 minutes or less to City Bus) and similar to Sky Bus stop for Airport transfer. Would definitely stay again assuming a similar deal was available.
Nice room but beware of parking!”
We chose to stay at Ascotia Off Queen as we were only staying one night in Auckland and it appeared to be good value for money for this purpose. And it was. The room was a little small however it fit our purpose as we were there for only one night. In regards to parking, we were lucky as we picked up our hire car the next day and did not have to park at the hotel. HOWEVER, if we did want to park (which we thought we would have been able to had we had our car) then we would have had to have paid $25 per night and there were only a few spots - maybe 10?! I can see that this will be annoying for guests who book through Agoda and expect parking to be easily available here (and cheaper!). We ate in the restaurant and the food was nice however there appeared to only be one chef working and the chef cooked each table in whole before starting the next one (i.e the table next to us ordered before us ordered and they ordered an entree and a main. We ordered these as well however we had to wait until they received both their entree and main before we received our entree). This was a little annoying however the food was quite nice when we got it. Overall, it's a nice hotel for a short stay and we'd most likely stay here again as long as we didn't have a car with us.
One night stand”
We were only in Auckland for the one night to attend a medical appointment and the Ascotia was the ideal location. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was small, clean, with comfortable beds. There was no room service, so we went down to the dining room for a buffet dinner which started at 6.00pm. By 6.20pm when we arrived, several dishes were empty and the food was cold. I would rate the Ascotia 3.5 stars. Having said that we would certainly stay at the Ascotia again.
nice hotel, newly refurbished”
The Ascotia is in an ideal for our visit just off Queen Street in Auckland CBD. We were met at reception by friendly, helpful staff. We found our room to be of smart modern decor, clean and well appointed. The bar area was inviting and comfortable and the staff again, very helpful.
very good hotel for its price”
the hotel is located just off Queen st. which is a bout five to ten minutes walk from every place you need to go to in downown Auckland, how ever it is up hill. the room looks like you should pay about 30% more for this hotel. overall my experience was very good and i intend to go back there
Super convenient location”
It was very convenient and just need to get off from the airport shuttle on the 1st stop in the city center (1D). Efficient checked in and the room is spacious. Will absolutly book the same hotel when travel Auckland again. Already recommend to a friend and she had booked the same hotel already.
Comfortable, Close & Friendly”
I only had a two night stay with Ascotia Off Queen, but it was a very pleasant stay. I stayed in a queen room and it was clean and comfortable! I did not spend much time in the room while there, as the CBD shopping and theatres are very close! The staff were very friendly on the numerous times I passed through reception. Often in cheaper hotels the price indicates a dramatic drop in quality, I did not find this to be the case here, it was a very comfortable stay. I like trying new places, but I would have no problem staying here again, or recommending it to a friend staying in Auckland's CBD area.
clean, quite and Comfortable”
I stayed two nights at Ascotia Off Queen hotel in Auckland and I enjoyed facilities available in the hotel and its very good location that facilitated things I wanted to do. I guess the only drawback I experienced during my stay was related to Internet connectivity; watching a streamed BBC news for 30 minutes counted for 500MB and hence I had to pay NZ$5!
Clean, Good location & Price”
I was in Auckland in April so its Autumn. The room do not have air-condition or fan, so if you are staying during summer or winter - it might not be comfortable. I had to open my windows at night to have some ventilation. At night was noisy - maybe because its near restaurants and other night life. Good distance from the shopping street - I enjoy my walk from and to the hotel.
Not too bad for what it was.”
Auckland accommodation is in my mind overpriced compared with what you would get in Australia.. Really struggled to find anything on par but think this is due to the buy up of property and the market reflecting this .. Anyway hotel was reasonably priced and did the job .. My room although nothing flash was a bed and a decent bathroom. The location was perfect for me and was easily accessible when getting there from the Airport Bus drop off point .. Although I suspect I wouldn't stay here again in the first instance, it definitely would be my second choice as it was reasonable.
there were a lot of pluses, helpful and friendly in reception. Very clean. So handy to downtown and k road, buses just a few meters. Cafes and eating places many and varied. The hotel did have very convenient parking, costly, but that is the way it is in auckland. The room is not large but we were seldom in it, so that was ok.
Consistently good value”
I always enjoy my stay here. Location is great - short walk down Queen St into the city centre, airport bus stops right on Queen St a minute walk and returns to the airport just across the rd. Lots of other buses including the city loop bus (50cents) if you need to rest your feet. The rooms are always very clean and the hotel quiet. I have often had a fantastic view of the city and skytower etc too. Staff are not super friendly but efficient and there if you need them 24 hrs.
Affordable new central hotel ”
I have really enjoyed my stay at Ascotia. The room was brand new, spacious, well-designed. Despite a heavy rain, I had a good night sleep. Compared to other similar hotels, I found it was more quiet, the heating system was working well, it was perfectly clean. Only one complaint: the shower had no temperate water - it was either burning hot or freezing cold. It gave me a bad skin rash after the shower. But it won't deter me from going back there and next time I will raise the issue at the reception if necessary! They provide excellent customer service.
Convenient location, walking distance to Sky Tower”
Although the facility of the hotel looks simple but contemporary and good enough for travellers only staying in Auckland for few days. It is located quite close to Queen Street and Sky Tower with a lot of good restaurants nearby. So dining and shopping are very convenient. I hIghly recommend this hotel for budget travellers.
Staff is very helpful :) location is great, near skybus stop for travelers goin to and from the airport. Bus stop for the city link is so near as well. Its just a min and your on top of queen st. Less than 10 mins your at K road or if you’d like to go to the civic center and catch a play , you’ll be there in 10-15min. Everything is accessible even by just walking and the staff is helpful with directions. Rooms are clean and newly renovated. Had a really pleasant stay!
Great hotel for value with clean rooms”
This hotel is a bit of a gem amidst expensive Auckland. The rooms are small but very clean, and they "work" despite the size. The bathrooms are also very clean. The location is a few minutes up the hill on the central street in Auckland, but it's very close to the main areas with all the key sites. I would definitely stay here again.
