Remote town
This port town, particularly at night time, felt like it had been abandoned. Sensations upon arrival to the hotel were those of nostalgia, missing the delight of cities we had visited throughout our journey in Thailand. Sometimes you just can't put your finger on what's missing but you can feel it.

Good priced room, lies trying to sell you packages
Nice single room for what you will often pay for a dorm in other cities. The walls were thin, so you could hear most of what was going on around, but the city is pretty quiet, so that's okay. Immediately upon checking in, the hostel staff tried to sell me on their boat package, including the boat, tuk tuk to the border, bus across the border, and tuk tuk to the city. I asked about the prices of those things individually and they outright lied, trying to make their package seem like a good deal, including telling me that the border would take two hours and that there was no way I'd make the boat if I went on my own. I made my own way anyway and not only were the tuk tuks half prices what the hostel told me, the border was quite quick and I made it to the boat more than an hour earlier than the people who took their package. They also tried charging me for momey exchange more than their printed out price on the counter. Stay for the night, but purchase nothing else.

Nicest guest house we've stayed in Thailand.
Pros: clean white sheets, first place with no stains! Toilet paper and hot water plus good water pressure are all lovely luxuries for this price point. Nice staff with a cute coffee shop at the front and a Tuk Tuk that'll take you to the border. No cons really.

Nice place on your way to the border
Great little place to stay and relax in Chiang Khong on your way to Laos.... comfortable, very clean, a great vibe with wooden walls and feels homey. Staff is ok.

Guesthouse was full
I booked with Baan Fai Guesthouse about a week before I arrived and was quite excited to stay in a traditional-style home. When we arrived (on time) we were told that the place was fully booked. I gave my name and showed my reservation and was told that the day before several people showed up and that they still had not left, so we were out of luck. The owner then informed us that he would take us down the street to his friend's hotel to stay the night. The rooms were comparable facilities (aircon, bed, bathroom) but the place we ended up staying was not nearly as lovely in appearance or atmosphere as Baan Fai seemed to be. We were offered free breakfast as compensation (which was good) and the owner drove us to the border in the morning himself, but I am very sad that our reservation was disregarded. The staff were friendly and helpful given the situation.

Decent Stay
Cheap, Good Location, Friendly Owner
Everything was fine and as expected. The room was small, but quite new and clean. The bathroom was not in good shape though. Chiang Khong is small district, where you can walk around easily. The guesthouse is situated right in the middle and Saturday walking street is right in front of the guesthouse. There is a good restaurant that serves Pad Thai next to the guesthouse. The owner was very nice and friendly. All in all, it was value for money.
