A Great Hostel”
I greatly enjoyed my time at Base St Kilda. It was pleasant in almost every respect - very professional staff, cleaned daily, nice travelers, and a good value. The location is outstanding and really where you want to be, and easy access to the central area of Melbourne also. In short, it is one of the better hostels I've found.
Perfect location good fun party hostel”
A bit on the pricey side for an 8 bed shared room but welcome to Australia. I got lucky and met great people from all parts of the world. Also, not all beds were occupied during my entire week stay. Nomaads is another good alternative close by for money saving but kitchen facilities at Base are much better and the bar downstairs here is the place to be on a Monday night! If staying in St Kilda this is your spot because beach and Acland street are a stones throw away... #stay@base
Hey Alicia, Thanks for your awesome review and stay! Glad to see you had a great stay and enjoyed your BINGO monday!!
Great location and friendly staff”
This was the first time I stayed in a backpacker's and I was quite apprehensive; however, my stay at Base was nothing but enjoyable. The counter staff are friendly and helpful. They showed me around and explained some perks available to guests staying at the female sanctuary (free champagne at the hostel's bar at a certain time, lady's night, free towel and toiletries, etc). The room, including the bed and bathroom, was clean. Bathroom was spacious and there was hot water. Room also has an air-conditioner. Although there are 6 beds, the room did not feel cramped or stuffy at all, and received ample sunlight through the windows. The bar on the ground floor of Base has parties pretty much every night. Not my kind of thing, but it is always packed so I guess the parties must be good. It can get noisy at night. The female dorm is on the top floor (3rd) so it isn't too bad. Also, on my first night there was a free BBQ downstairs. Base is about 15 minutes by tram 96 from Southern Cross station. The hostel is adjacent to Acland St, which is lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Prices are incredibly attractive (look around! I got a pint of Coopers for $4 before 6pm, and a 300gm porterhouse steak with sides at $15). The beach is a 5-10 min walk from Base. I saw a penguin!
lovely enjoyable great!”
my girlfriend and I went to visit Melbourne and the hotel is very close to the tram station which.can take 20 mins tram to the CBD of Melbourne.the room is unexpectedly large clean and with tv. in addition, St kilda is also one of attration of Melbourne witch is highly accessible and with Coles and woolworths nearby. we stayed in double room and it has a balcony! we are happy with the room as it is hotel standard. overall it is great!.
I checked into Base as a solo traveller for one night as i was going out on the city that night and just needed a place to sleep/shower instead of travelling back to my suburb that saturday night/sunday morning. It was my first time staying in a backpackers so i didnt really know what to expect but i really enjoyed it. The staff were great. Helpful, cheerful and welcoming. And the Base is real close to PT which is grous. The room i stayed in was the Ladies Sanctuary dorm with 5 other ladies and i found it real pleasant, clean and quiet. It was really affordable and i will definitely stay there again and i recommend others to book in there whether it be a short stay or long stay. And the parking was real handy. Parked my car up and off i went. P.s. I rated the food/dining a 1 only reason that i didnt order any food while i stayed there, maybe next time. But thanx to the team at Base Backpackers:-)
Thanks for the amazing review Rebecca! So happy to hear that you had such a positive stay here, that's what we want everyone to experience! We do have exciting news that I'm sure you'll benefit from on your next stay, we just launched a brand new restaurant that's attached to our bar. So you can now try something from our extensive menu to make your stay a 10/10! Hope to see you soon!
While the rooms are very clean, the shared spaces, especially the kitchen could have been better. They have lots of activities every night, so if that's what you're after it's great. I booked a double twin room with ensuite bathroom for myself and it was nice. The bed has to be one of the best I've encountered in the hostel/budget hotel category. No TV in room, but to be honest I was mostly out exploring Melbourne every day that I didn't miss it at all. St Kilda is a great location IMHO, if you want a place not too far away from CDB, near the beach and in an eclectic neighborhood. I simply love the location! There's two large-ish supermarkets (Coles & Woolies) within walking distance so that's very convenient as well. All in all, I would stay in this hostel again. :-)
Amazing hostel, clean and new.”
base is an amazing place to stay in melbourne, the nicest staff and a great atmosphere. clean rooms, big kitchen, a great look, bright. it is a party hostel but if you get a lush private room you'll still get plenty of sleep. things todo every day afl games, free trips to the cheap market, foot ball, secret walks of melbourne and the all end with a free drink when back to base. every one who wants to meet good friends and have great experiences should stay at base.
Base St Kilda Hotel ”
The base is so convenient to all the fantastic attractions of saint kilda, a short walk to the Espy Hotel, Prince of Wales, Elephant and Wheel Barrow, the fantastic cheap pizzas at the Banff. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and I felt very safe and comfortable. The rooms are clean and tidy.....and my goodness I have never seen so many good looking men in the one bar!!
A good way to meet new people”
Accomodating staff that will help with travel queries etc. I am staying here for a week as I love the location as literally a 3 min walk to the beach front. St Kilda itself is a quiet town, but there are clubs, bars & restaurants all walking distance from the hostel. I am in a mixed 8 dorm, fortunately, the people are great. The room however, is messy, but the staff are making them clear up. Despite the pile of mess, I am comfortable here & the linen is clean. The only downfall is, they will charge for wifi, ... I suggest doing weekly if long stay. Wifi is good all round building. Think most hostels charge anyway.
A very nice backpacker”
I was only here for a few hours. After spending some time checking out St. Kilda, particularly the beach, I needed a place to shower before I board my flight home. This backpacker is easy to find, and you can get to it by tram (no. 96) from Bourke or Spencer St.
My wife and I stayed for a night here. Staff was helpful the whole time we were there. On the day we checked out, I heard some metal fell on the floor but I did not realize what it was and we were in a hurry to start our great ocean road journey. So we left. While driving I realize the metal was my ring. I immediately email base backpackers fearing the worst. They promptly replied but could not find it. But they continued looking for it and by dinner time , they told me they found my wedding ring! I am so grateful for their help. Otherwise the rest of the trip would have been ruined. Thank you to all who have helped :)
Good to hear you had a great time Xiu! So happy to hear you have your ring back
Would absolutely recommend! ”
Checked in as a solo traveler, newly moved to a Melbourne! I have stayed in other Bases before and it did not disappoint! :) Over my stay I met Isaac, Payhton, Ashley, Camilla, Nicholas and Rich on reception who couldn’t do enough for you! Everyone is SO friendly and welcoming :) Red Eye bar is such a great place to meet people also! Jack, Lydia and Rachel were amazing! Events every night that Celton and Rhys always made sure you knew about! Great stay, thanks to all the rest of the team I didn’t officially meet! <3
Lovely Hotel for Backpackers”
i like the hotel, it is perfect for the backpackers. this hotel had the complete facility like public kitchen, attached bathroom and friendly staff. i will stay again if i go to melbourne again. besides that, this hotel take care of girls~
A Nearby Traveller from Adelaide”
Having only stayed in one other backpackers, I was pleasantly surprised at how organised and clean and new Base was. This provided a wonderful environment to meet many travellers from around the world. My main disappointment had to do with the people working at the front desk, none of which seemed particularly happy to be working there.
Good place to live”
Nice room with clean, have different events holding during the week. Close to st kilda beach. We are happy to stay in Base St Kilda Hotel.
Great location and atmosphere”
Only stayed for 1 night at mixed-share room. Smell in the room, messy (depending on your roommate), but clean bed sheets and shower. Great location, 5 minutes walk to main street in St Kilda with resturants, bars, beach, tram to city. There's a bar, great for partying, short stay or just for a place to rest.
Location - Great just around the corner to St Kilda Beach. Carlisle street plenty of cafes and very close to Tram station. Great!
Everything just use the apps to function. The app is function as a key to open the door n lift. Near to ST Kilda beach.
Savvy hotel with great location and nice people”
first time stay at a hostel, stayed in an all-dorm sanctuary, people there are so so nice and many events going on inside. great location, take 16 tram and can take you anywhere. will choose to stay there again if visit melbourne sometime. did not check out the beach unfortunately, stop at esplanade and the beach looked quite amazing from afar.
Highly recommended stay in Melbourne, sociable hostel with events every night. Staff are really accommodating, Ash, Isaac and Jade are great hosts and always willing help on reception. Fun hostel if you're visiting Melbourne
Hey Una, thanks for review, hopefully we get to see you again very soon!
