Stylish, comfortable and convenient. ”
Basque Boutique was the best hotel we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Spain. Our room was styled based on Picasso's Gernika, and a pleasure to spend time in. While not a large room, it lacked nothing and has a small balccony that looks out onto the street below, Pilota Kalea. Located in the old town, Casco Viejo, it is noisy and lively into the early hours, but we were there in winter so had the balcony doors closed and the sound insulation was great at keeping out the late night sounds. (I also recommend travelling with silicone earplugs). Casco Vieja was a surprising joy, with old narrow, largely pedestrian streets, filled with character and age and remarkably photogenic, day and night. Being in the old town, with its accompanying old sewerage systems, we had to adjust to not flushing toilet paper down the bowl, a first for me, but something I became used to very quickly (and have encountered elsewhere in Spain since). Also worth noting is the entrance can be difficult to find at first (we met someone else also searching for it when we arrived). Mark it on the map before you get to Bilbao, because there is no entrance sign. It is on Dorre Kalea, the first building on your right as you enter the street from Pilota Kalea. If in doubt, enter the building entrance code into the intercom, and if the door opens, youve found it!
