Penang Island’s transport hub, Bayan Lepas is home to Penang International Airport, Penang intercity bus terminal and a ferry terminal with service to Pulau Jerejak. It’s also connected to Peninsular Malaysia by the Penang Bridge, making it easy to drive to and from the island.
Those with accommodation in Bayan Lepas will want to visit the Snake Temple. It was built in the mid-19th century by a Buddhist monk. The temple lives up to its name, and de-venomed vipers are everywhere.
Otherwise, Bayan Lepas is Penang’s center of industry. It doesn’t see many international tourists outside of the time they spend at the airport, but there are a few attractive commercial sites like Penang International Sport Arena that draw locals and expatriates. Queensbay Mall is the biggest shopping mall on Penang, and it’s joined by Sunshine Square. Bayan Lepas is a major electronics producer and a good place to shop for the latest gadgets and accessories.
Most of the people booking hotels in Penang are through-travelers or business people connected to the industrial projects. Bukit Jambul Country Club and Pearl Island Golf and Country Club are popular places for local executives to meet with visiting associates. Visitors to the Universiti Sains Malaysia also account for a proportion of rooms booked in this area.
