You get what you pay”
The bedroom a little bit stunk because they only turn on A/C after 7pm. Because you pay very cheap price you may get roommates who are not very tidy. The bathrooms are quite small and not very clean but still okay. The staff was very helpful as much as he could. He went up and downstairs to fulfill my requests without uneasiness. It locates the nearest to the station but it’s a disadvantage of this town that there are not many bus stops and restaurants nearby and I had to take a taxi to find something to eat.
Very convenient location.
Great place to stay. It might take sometimes to walk from the train station but for the price paid, it is definitely cheap option. Perhaps they can improve by providing a better quality blanket because it's too small and I can't really cover my whole body.
Good location, 10-15 min walk from train station. Easy to reach. The owner, Jasmine, is very friendly. She has a very cute (and old, 17 y.o.) shih tzu dog, for those who like dogs. There are laundry services, for a minimal fee. A good base to explore Hualien and Taroko National Park for a few days. There are lots of small restos and convenience stores nearby. I would recommend this hostel to friends who are budget travellers.
Great value. Convinient location.”
Friendly staff who patiently explain how to get around. Very clean bathrooms. Do your own laundry. Strong WiFi in lobby and room. Cook your own food. Convinience store next door. Supermarket 3-5 min. My special request in the booking form was noted by the coustomer service desk and granted. They obviously go out of their way to make sure your stay will be pleasant and memorable.
After reading the reviews I expected the worst. Got there, the rooms were totally alright (highest bed didn’t have mattresses so I don’t think they are in use). Very close to train station and staff was amazing! Nice people there to chat in the evening as well. Nothing fancy but definitely way better than the reviews:)
I made some friends down there~”
I made some friends down there~; The hotel owner lady is a very kind person, she let me lived one more night for free~, I didn’t mange my trip plan well and missed the last train, and out of sympathy, she let me live one more night for free.
Rock bottom price, not best value though”
This was the cheapest hostel in Hualien, it was ok but you can feel that the owner is cutting corner on too many things. Start with the legendary three decker bunker bed, in a normal ceiling room, the top deck had absolutely no more than 40cm of headroom, you crawl into the bed like it is a side loaded coffin, luckily because it is not usually full you are not very likely to sleep in one of those wonders. Then it's the bedding, you get a clean duvet cover of normal size, but the "duvet" itself is half the size, it took us a good laughter and some hair scratching to figure out that this is not a joke. I wish agoda could let me post photos because they do have the comical power to make you laugh. Then it's the service, when we asked to turn on the air-con, the staff challenged our seriousness by asking "do you really need air-con on?" Of course we do otherwise why would we ask? There are other bits and pieces but I guess you can see what I mean. But the hostel is still functional, not far from the train station and the price was cheap. However after spend three more day in another nearby hostel that cost only 1.8 dollars more per day I realise that the value is not so impressive than the price may suggest.
WORTH THE MONEY! ”
Cheapest place we could find last money and so happy we stayed here. We stayed in the triple bunk room which was fine. AC runs after 7 or 8 pm and we're gone all day so it worked out perfect. Free water.
Good deal for limited budget but not for quality required traveller”
The hostel looks old and facilities are not sufficient. However, basic equipmens are provided. Location is really convenient, that is not far from train station. Overall, the experience is not very good but what can I say for such a price.
Great for a stay”
The hostel's location is great and near to the station. The staffs are friendly and helpful. The room is clean, the only thing that I disliked is the air-conditional in the room is only open from 7pm to 10am..
You have basic beds and facilities you need for a short stay”
15-20 minutes walk from the train station, close to a 7/11 convenience store so you can go for anything you need. It was the cheapest price that I could find on Agoda. The share bathrooms were ok , you make the bed youself and need to clean the sheets before leaving. They don't have clean towels and will sell you a 1-time-used one for 25NT if you need. The staff was not that friendly as other places though.
Cheap and no frills accommodation”
Pro's: - Staff are travelers so English is quite good. - A/C common - Laundry facilities - Free drinking water Con's: - A/C in dorms only on from 7pm until 10 in the morning; which is not only uncomfortable during the day but also creates a musty odour in the room - Three tier bunk beds in rooms that creates a cramped dorm room - Wettest wet bathrooms I have ever come across. Pretty much a toilet cubicle with shower hose attached to sink tap. - Not that much eating options in the area. Not an issue if you are only staying a night or two.
Comfortable enough ”
located about 7 minutes from hualien train station and the visitor centre. lobby is a bit small so it can get quite cramped. you can take bus 301 from hualien train station down to dong da men night market, otherwise it will be a 35min++ walk there!
Good location and cheap ”
This hostel has a good location. Near the main train station. Rooms are fine, a bit dark for whom is leaving earlier and have to pack. They have those 3 bunk beds which I found difficult staying up there and no place to place your mobile or any eletronic device while you are sleeping. Actually they have 2 outlets per bed that is very good! Laundry is a bit expensive and you have to pay extra for the soap.
Has everything you could need, and not too far from the night market. Staff could be a little bit more friendly, they kind of ignore you mostly, which is fine I guess. But worth the price you pay for the hostel, definitely.
Smoking area is at the entrance”
Every night we are greeted with many smokers at the entrance, playing games, eating snacks and laughing away. Most of them don't look like they are staying there. Staff is always not around during the day and you will need to make a phone call to find the staff, which is very inconvenient. Besides that, the hostel provides value for money tours and beds are fairly clean, although having a small table in the room will be good.
Nice place to stay”
Thank you so much for the time at big bear hostel. I enjoyed to stay for a few nights, always extended the nights and came back after discovering Taroko National Park. So nice from Jasmin, that I could leave some luggage in the hostel. Miss the little doggies. See you next time, Seraina
everything Was perfect”
they offer different day-trips, my friend and I did the taroko tour and the River tracing one. Both Of them amazing! the staff is really nice and helpful. showers clean. the only inconvenient, breakfast is not inlcuded.
Meet your new Family”
Staying at the Big Bear Hostel has been a great experience. Not only is it very cozy there, but the international staff has been really helpful with planning our day trips. And hanging out in the common area actually fells like family time...
