Acceptable”
Door codes to get in, which worked fine. Room very basic and smelled, mattress protector horrible, kettle in the room didn't work. Toilet on ground floor and two bathrooms, but both in need of maintenance/decoration. Kitchen facilities and breakfast options good for £3. Location on quiet road.

Decent, for a hostel but could easy improve. (1 nights stay after a concert.)”
Accessing the hostel was easy and efficient i simply received a code via email and we could walk straight into our room without having to check in. We could have turned up for the first time at 3am after the concert if we had wished. We had 2x double beds in our room however they weren't great. The covers and pillows were all well cleaned but the mattresses were poor. The metal springs on one side of my bed were very uncomfortable and my friend told me his had a dip in it asif the boards were broken beneath. There were only 2 of us though so this was not a problem since the other side of the beds were comfortable enough. The shower was nice and hot but veryyy weak. The bathtub had hair in it(not just around the drain) from another guest however i assume this was from the same day and not the cleaning staffs fault. Other thoughts: Pleasantly warm building. Coffee available in room. At least 2 toilets i saw. Not a bad location. Fire alarm was dangling by the wire in our room!

So close to serviceable...”
The Birchfields is relatively cheap, compared to an actual hotel at short notice, and it's better kept than some cheap hotels I've stayed in, and the WiFi is decent. Self service breakfast is fine if all you want is a base of operations for a few days and that's all I was after. Being unstaffed is a bit of a risk but if guests pay attention and remember their codes for the doors it's fine. But the bed (an IKEA sofa bed where one side's solid and one side sags) hurt my back, and the shower packed in on the second day, and I can't really recommend a place where I couldn't start the day well rested and clean.
