Quiet and comfortable, minutes from the beach”
Our first stop on our North Island tour was the Bay of Islands, and the staff at Breakwater Motel really helped our holiday get off to a fantastic start. When we checked in, I asked about what to do around Paihia, and they helpfully gave me relevant brochures and information. After picking an activity (swimming with dolphins), they rang around and found me the best time and price from the local tours, and we were all booked for the next day! They also suggested some good places to eat. The room was very pleasant; one of the few motels that we stayed in with a bedroom separate to the kitchen/lounge, and a decently-sized bathroom. Everything was nice and clean. Parking was in a bay literally right outside the front door. The WiFi actually worked, was decently fast, and the data allocation was relatively large for New Zealand (200MB each). The location is perfect: the last motel on the Paihia strip, so very quiet, but only a few minutes' walk from the central wharf area with all the shops and restaurants. The only downside to it all was it was the most expensive place we stayed in during our entire tour, but I think that reflects the prices in Paihia generally.

Great value and comfort”
My three adult children and I really enjoyed our stay in Paihia at the Breakwater. Staff were friendly, facilities were clean and comfortable. Beds were comfy and shower was good (my two deal breakers when judging any accommodation :)Being self contained meant we could make our own meals if we wanted to which help contain costs and allowed us more time to relax. The units have been recently renovated. The only negative I found was the design and placement of the microwave shelf which was too high above the bench and awkwardly positioned making it difficult to reach safely. Location close to the town centre and to sites of interest such as the Waitangi Treaty ground were a plus.

Great location, ocean view room”
we had a relaxing stay at the motel. room was fully equipped with cooking and living amenities. the one small niggle was that while free internet was advertised, we were issued with 4 vouchers, each for 200MB of data usage, to cover our 4-day stay. woefully inadequate for a family of 3 with 5 internet connected devices. data rationing was in place. on the other hand, the hotel was a very, very short walk away from the Paihia waterfront, where we took long walks and enjoyed the bay area in the evening and early part of the night. restaurants and shopping were 5-10 minutes away. Paihia is a very small place.

Great place to stay and explore Bay of Islands”
Very nice. Wished we had planned a longer stay. Need at least a week to explore Bay of Islands, and the wineries there. Sports fishing is also good here. Whole day boat cruise is also available to explore the area. The weather is great - outdoor air condition, cannot ask for more. We planned to be back soon!

Lovely warm welcome by the receptionist. Excellent allround accomadation. ”
Our sea view room was spacious, clean and full of little details which made our stay special. The staff were really lovely and made us feel welcome even though we arrived just before the reception closed at 7pm. They even give us a little carton of fresh milk in the fridge! The location is very close to the wharf and all of the local eateries and tourist points of interest. We only stayed for 2 nights. I wish it was longer!

Convenient but not great motel”
Perfectly sited. Great view from tiny balcony. Water (in handbasin, toilet and kitchen a slight problem. No breakfast served and stove top doesn't fit kitchen pots and pans. Otherwise, good quality motel.

Clean, quiet and comfortable”
We stayed here for the long weekend,it was a lovely place to stay,the owners go out of their way to help out and make sure everything is as it should be,it is off a side street so it was up the back and well back from any street noise.The unit itself was clean tidy,and comfortable although next time we will try the seaview side ones which looked like they had an amazing views.I would thoroughly recommend this place when travelling to Paihai.We went to the food festival which was just great so shall return next year.

stay in a shoebox just not on !”
We booked a Waterfront Suite which was so small you couldn't open doors properly and the bed took up the whole bedroom space! We were charged an extra $30 per night per child just to open the sofa bed in the lounge that was already part of the shoe box! To make matters worse the hotel owner was rude surly and would not let us check in earlier despite the room being ready well before. All up we paid per night breakfast NOT included to stay in a shoe box you had no space to swing a cat in and the motel offered NO FACILITIES at all. The Waterfront Suite is also located next to the very busy road which you can't see from the internet photos, so is a very noisy shoe box. I have travelled and stayed in many places before and this is truly the WORST accommodation I and my family have ever stayed in. Good riddance.
