          Can't beat the location”

          Location, pool facilites, relaxed atmosphere

We love the Capricorn Resort, we stay there on numerous occasions every year. It is just such a pity that they haven't kept up the maintenance on the rooms because the grounds and the pool area and the bars/restaurants are really very good. It is quite expensive for what you get in the rooms, but we continue to go there because it is close to home and a great get-away for families.

          Not for the discerning traveller”

The only great thing about The Mercure is it's location.

I'd driven for 5 hours and the drive from Yeppoon Beach to The Mercure was beautiful. And that's where it all ended! Driving to reception, the buildings are old and crumbly and a not a welcome sight. I then had the pleasure of being served by the least friendly receptionist! I mean, this woman did not crack a smile. And neither did her manner change on subsequent encounters. I stayed at the Palms. I walked into a mouldy and smelly lobby with a cramped and dark lift lugging my 3 pieces of luggage. For AUS 187 a night, I'd expect at least a porter! The rooms are along a corridor which looks worse than any university accommodation block (and I left university 12 years ago) The standard room had 2 wicker chairs with no cushions (hardly comfortable), a formica table with a 14" flat screen, a balcony with the width of a chair with equally ghastly green uncomfortable chairs. The bathroom has mould on the walls. I keep reading how the manager is hoping for renovations; that is the least of their problems. The service is dismal.I came back to a room 3 times with the bed made and towels changed and nothing else. The granola bar wrappers and the soap wrapper still on the floor next to the bin. The toilets next to the restaurant were ALWAYS smelly and dirty. Breakfast was almost a scramble for tables. It was during the school holidays with large numbers. There were numerous tables waiting to be cleared of dishes with diners waiting around. I had to get a member of staff, walk them to a table and ask them to clear it. The dining experience was so bad I chose to drive to Yeppoon beach on two nights including a night I would have loved to stay in having run the local half marathon and hence exhausted. I took numerous photos with a view point of emailing the manager. On check out, I was served by the assistant manager who did not even inquire about my stay and on handing me back my credit card did not thank me for my stay or hope for my return.

          A sad decline”

The pool was clean. Pool-side restuarant the highlight.

We made the most of it but overall disappointing. We have been visiting this facility for over 25 years. This is first time back in 4 years and in this time Mecure have run this resort down but continue to charge as if a 4 star property. I can accept it is stuck in a time warp (1980's) but cannot accept it being unclean. Rooms and common areas rundown and far from clean and bright as we remember it. Food at the poolside restuarant was excellent, cannot comment on the Japanese as it was booked out first night and closed for the other 2 nights. The buffet was a disgrace. Over priced and advertised as international but lacking in choice, flavour and presentation. No table clothes on the tables and no drink service. Staff friendly enough but untrained and inexperienced. Breakfast was adequate but once again overpriced. The only property we have stayed in for over a decade that did not offer wi-fi, not even at a price. Noticed many guests opted to drive back to Yeppoon for meals or take-away. Certainly does not have a resort feel and get the feeling they are cash poor, as they now charge for everything, rubber tubes for the pool, tennis game, bowls. All of these historically have been complimentary. The redeeming feature being a clean and sparkling pool, though don't loose your towel voucher or be prepared to cough up $20 towel payment. Will not be returning.

          Time for a reno”

          Pool, location, wedding catering

It feels like the rooms have not been renovated since the hotel originally opened. The room had a weird smell and the bed was rock hard. Air conditioning barely worked and there was mould in the bathroom. No room service was annoying. Obviously the pool and location is amazing but the Capricorn Resort cannot continue to use the pool as it's only attraction.

Rooms are tired and need a refurbish”

We attended a wedding at the resort and the catering and service at the function centre was very good.

The resort used to be managed by Rydges and now is a Mecure resort. I first stayed there 6 years ago and the rooms were tired and in need of a refurbish then (paint, new furniture - should I really have to put up with obvious stains on the coffee table?). Nothing, including the furniture, has changed. The grounds and pool are great - please put effort into the maintenance of the rooms.

Plenty to do, quiet and friendly staff

This would have been the best of resorts in its day but it needs a lot of basic maintenance now and the food needs to be brought into this century. The fly screen door nearly fell off my balcony when I tried to close it and the hot breakfast was cold and you could not get an espresso until the cappucino shop opened at 10. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there were plenty of activities if you wanted to do them. This is a great place for families or older people who want a quiet resort to relax at. My tip is that you don't waste your money by spending $26 on a dated buffet but go into town and go to a cafe.

The pool, the bar by the pool and the amenities were open

This was meant as a lazy weekend away, ticked the box there. The pool was awesome, it was also good to see all of the amenities open. Massage was great, access to a choice of restaurants was also a bonus. I felt the price was adequate on sale, full price would have been to much. The place is aging, not to say its run down but definitely showing her age. I would do it again at the right price.

          Lots of things to do

This trip was our third holiday at the resort. The resort is getting a bit tired, and you an see it in many ways. Since Mercure took over from Rydges, staff satisfaction has not improved and it shows. There are still lots of free activities, but it doesn't help if archery runs out of useable arrows and the broken table tennis net is not replaced despite repeated requests. The room we were in was extremely damp (which is due to the climate, of course), but the aircon has no dehumidify function - so the choice is either dampness or freezing cold. The pool area is still great, despite some missing tiles. Onsite restaurants are very expensive, the pool-side bar closed at 5.15pm - just when you would want a cold drink! The value of the resport lies in its beautiful and spacious grounds and its suitability for families, particularly with smaller children. It will need some major work soon, but it also needs some improvement in delivering the features it promises.

Dated hotel with limited dining choices”

Golf Pro is very helpful when arranging group activities

As I arrived before my partner I was delighted to be able to check in at 9:20am however this is where the joy stopped. The rooms and the furnishings are dated and need a revamp. We waited for 5 to 10 mins to order takeaway lunch whilst 2 employees stood no more than 2 metres away from us and watched whilst they had a chat. Our group was treated like school children at the outdoor bar and on several occassions the line for drinks was 7 - 10 deep with only one employee serving. We dined on Sunday night with a large group. The meals were nice but overpriced, the wine list was small and average and the service was very attentive.....too attentive. (There are only so many times you can ask, "Is everything alright?". I would play golf again as the staff are helpful and friendly but I think next time I will stay in Yeppoon and travel out to golf.
