“Excellent Cat Ba tours base””
This review is about the tours operating from the hotel, not the hotel itself. Even if you stay at any other hotel, we strongly recommend the services of Tony and Geoffrey, a vietnamese/french team offering what you most probably will not get from traditional vietnamese operators (poor diversity, low flexibility) or the better known other office tourist information (more expensive). They will take you to off-the-beaten-track places, by boat in Halong/Lan Ha Bay or Cat Ba beautiful inland remote areas. We will not forget the sympathy and efficiency of that team, able to organise (and improvise) tailor-made tours if you ask them to, at very good value for money. It was the difference between people just trying to make money out of the tours and guys doing their best to make you really enjoy your stay at one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Exceptional”
This is probably the cheapest place in Cat Ba. The room and furniture were a bit old. But considering the price we paid, the friendly staff and good location we were satisfied . We had a good time in Cat Ba.

Not only did Cat Ba House Backpackers provide affordable, lean accommodation at great price, when I forgot my passport they expedited it to Hanoi for me free of charge! I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough!

It's cheap and it shows sometimes”
This is probably the cheapest place in Cat Ba, and sometimes this shows. The room was a bit run-down, and the bathroom humid and mouldy. But considering the price we paid and the friendly staff, we could forgive these negatives. We had a good time.

3 charging sockets for 8 people!? Bed sheets... not sure when last properly cleaned along wth bathroom, staff a bit unapproachable at first but okay after a night or so! Great location but 5 flights of stairs (kind of normal in cat Ba though)

Cheap - but still not worth the money. ”
We've been travelling for 4 months through Southeast Asia, almost always staying in the cheapest place we can find on agoda. So far I haven't had a reason yet to post a negative review of anywhere. We are not at all fussy people, I understand that when paying $8 (CAD) for a room, you're going to be making a lot of sacrifices. We had a twin room and one of the bed sheets had blood on it. Not a huge problem, we only need one bed anyways, and honestly we've slept in many stained beds. One of the towels was heavily stained, again not a big deal. The bathroom was dirty and falling apart a little bit that's to be expected. Our problem with the room was how wet EVERYTHING was. The entire place smelled of mould and the beds were damp to the touch. We checked some other rooms in the hotel which were unoccupied and they were all the same, some were even worse with a disgusting mouldy smell. We used our sleeping bag liners so as to not have to sleep on a wet mattress but even that got damp from the air. In the morning all of our clothes that we laid out were literally wet to the touch. Even my backpack is currently airing out in our new hotel. The staff was super friendly and the room was cheap but I feel like I need to leave a review as all the ones I read were mostly positive and didn't mention the dampness. Hopefully I can stop someone else from staying here. There are a lot of other good budget options on Cat Ba; spend an extra dollar and stay at any of them. In the end it'll be cheaper than having to pay to do laundry and clean everything you own.

“Excellent hostel””
I booked a dorm bed based on the strength of the reviews here and I couldn't have chosen a more welcoming introduction to Vietnam! For such a low cost, the service provided here is simply outstanding, Mr Tony and the rest of the staff are so friendly and truly made me feel welcome. I booked two tours with the hostel, one to Halong Bay and one to Sa Pa, Mr Tony taking the time to explain the various options, and both of these tours were excellent. The bathrooms were quite small and basic but at this price, with this level of service and staff attentiveness, I would be surprised if there was a better option in Hanoi!

Tony and Nguyen were amazing hosts. They cooked for us one night! Their lobby makes for a great place to hang out and meet other travelers. The beds were clean. The bathroom left a little to be desired, but overall we had an amazing time at house backpackers. We would go back.

One of the best places in Vietnam”
We stayed there for 3 nights during the Tet festival and it was absolutely amazing. The owner Tony was super nice so after we arrived he invited us for a dinner at the hotel. He also gave us invitations for a New Year celebration which were in the city. He took us there and after we had a nice time together eating and chatting again at the hotel. He is very positive and smiling person. You can feel that he loves his job. His wife made for us breakfast and helped us with the tickets to Hanoi. The room was big but a bit cold. Excellent value, super-friendly staff”
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful; excellent English. We found both the room and the tour we booked through them to be a very good value. Breakfast was very good though a bit light (eggs and bread, pancake, etc. Not buffet-style). The beds are the softest we found in Vietnam. Such a welcome relief. The downside: things are a bit run down and could use some sprucing and deep cleaning (e.g. the bathroom door in our room had a pane of very broken glass in it, there was no mat or towel for outside the bathroom door so we tracked water everywhere, etc.) Minor complaints, and overall worth it.

Realy nice location and great atmosphere”
On the beach, quiet and far away from the city. Good place to meet other travellers and chill out. But the facilities are not the greatest, and they definitely take advantage of their relative isolation and the fact that they are in high demand,to charge expensive rates for their acomodation and food (all relative to same services in the city, of course).

Gross, gross, gross”
Room was disgusting. Cockroaches the size of cats came flying out of a hole in the wall, sheets were unbelievably dirty, and the toilet was not even flushed when we got there. The room had definitely not been cleaned between guests. Needless to say we did not spend the night. Avoid at all costs. Went to Cat Ba Central Hostel instead, which luckily, is completely clean and right on the water. Would reccomend it instead

Handy location, friendly staff”
Things have slackened off at this Hostel.Although it's still good value I stayed a week and my room was never cleaned or attended. The bathroom had leaks from where I'm not sure, but bathroom odours were musty & unpleasant. Breakfast was included in my plan, but it was minimal and did not include coffee or tea or any beverage. When I asked for an ashtray, which I did every morning, they only provided it once out of 7. Once she handed me a paper napkin! On the other hand, they are cheerful and pleasant and accommodating.
