"The hotel location is great, near to central business district. The foods is great. However, parking is not free. Need to pay RM2 per entry. There are some renovation in progress and it would be great if they can renovate the interior of the room as well."

The Magellan Sutera Resort

"We stayed here on our last day in Kota Kinabalu after having to stay in a very busy and crowded area. I wish we had stayed here from day 1 of our trip! The view was beautiful, and all the friendly staff made us feel very welcome. My husband had accidentally left his phone in our room after we had checked out and left the hotel, but the housekeeping staff found it and we were able to get it back from the receptionist. Honestly the best hotel we've stayed at so far in KK and will definitely stay here again when we come back."

Hotel 7 Suria
Central Business District,Central Business District - View on map
"Stayed here for 4 nights. Place is brand new, located in the city center 5 mins walk from the fish market, ports, cafe's etc. It's on the 7th floor of a mall, so the entrance is straight from the wall. Stayed in a standard room with no windows. Circulation was good, aircon was good, cleaning service was spot on, staff was very polite. Only thing they should be better at is communicating before the booking, that there is a tourist fee of 10 ringgit per day. Other than that, i'll give them 5 stars!"

Hotel Grandis
Central Business District,Central Business District - View on map
"We really enjoyed our stay here in Hotel Grandis. I am glad I made the last minute decision to change hotels and choose Hotel Grandis. I really wanted my mom to enjoy her post-operation vacation. The hotel is at the 'end' of central Kota Kinabalu but the location is excellent. Given the small size of downtown KK, everything is of walking distance. Beside it is Suria Sabah mall which doesn't really offer much in terms of shopping but it was good nonetheless. The property is well-maintained and the staff (Nia stood out for me) are excellent. The room we had was quite spacious and had a tasteful design. The bathroom was quite spacious too. The roof top bar and pool are nice especially if you love sunsets as it gives you an unobstructed view of Kota Kinabalu's beautiful sunset. The gym is adequate. Good thing I opted to have breakfast included as their breakfast spread is quite decent. The Rosea Cafe also has a nice view, make sure you sit by the window. Their nasi lemak was pretty good. All in all, if I will visit KK again, I will definitely book Hotel Grandis. Highly recommended."

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu

"Bad start as we weren't aware the hotel was making major renovations until we arrived- irritating ! Drilling and banging throughout breakfast not pleasant. On arrival we also discovered that the pool was being renovated - major let down as this was one of the key reasons we chose the hotel. Despite the negative start, within 5 mins of our arrival at the checkin counter we'd been upgraded to a Deluxe ocean view room and once the hotel informed us of their pool shuttle service to Le Meridien hotel pool (located a 10 min walk away on the same ocean front) we were reassured. The room was lovely - recently renovated, it was modern and chic, fabulous king size bed, big bay windows with lovely views which can also be seen from the bath tub. There are no balconies which is a pity but balconies don't appear to be prevalent in Borneo towns so no big deal. Buffet breakfast with lots of choice - western, asian plus unusual offers like French cheese and salad. Food ok. Hotel service was super efficient and charming - don't know how they managed it with all the banging and drilling going on. we came back to this hotel a week later and they remembered us - pretty impressive considering the number of rooms. We also got upgraded again to an equally lovely, bigger, club (club deluxe?) room. The lady at the business centre was really helpful and in fact source of a wealth of tourist info on top of her business centre title. There’s also a tourist counter in the hotel. Can't say for the restaurants as we didn't eat there apart from breakfast. "

The Pacific Sutera Hotel
Central Business District,Central Business District - View on map
"our stay at pacific sutera was very pleasant. the staff seemed quite tolerant of playful antics of our 12-year-old twins and their school friend who accompanied us on this pleasure trip. the food was outstanding and the views were simply stunning. if you like golf there's a 27-hole course adjacent to the hotel. there is also tennis, bowling and a variety of other facilities that we did not utilize, but are available to the guests. their pool is large and located right next to the beach. the location is great and only a 12rm taxi ride to downtown (wisma). the rooms were not abundantly spacious, but more than adequate for our needs as our kids had their separate room. we had an ocean view room which was well worth the nominal surcharge. indeed, our overall stay was very pleasant. the only negative worth commenting about has to do with the staff's lack of willingness to assist us with directions and give us ideas on which borneo tourist attractions to visit. we rented a car which clearly is in conflict with their revenue generating tour business at the hotel. as a consequence to this, we found them quick to recommend a tour, but quite reluctant to offer assistance if we were to 'go it' alone. it's only a slight negative when you consider that all businesses operate the same way in kota kinabalu when there exists this conflict of interest, such as the downtown scuba diving shop we used. overall however, it's a great place and well worth considering when you visit kk. Horizon Hotel Kota Kinabalu
Central Business District,Central Business District - View on map
"Overall we enjoyed our stay at this fabulous new hotel in central KK. Our room was comfortable and had a decent view, most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the concierge was also extremely helpful in organizing our tour to the Mari Mari cultural village and giving honest information about the cheapest way to go island hopping (i.e. walk to the jetty and arrange it independently). A few minor criticisms: there wasn't much space in the room to put our things or especially to hang them up (for drying); after the first day, there seemed to be a chronic coffee shortage at the otherwise excellent breakfast -- we often felt that we were "in the zone" (of no coffee); and finally, there was no wi-fi on our floor (this was addressed in a personal email from the manager, who said they're in the process of upgrading in-room wi-fi so this won't be a problem in the future. Also, when booking, watch which "B2B channel" you use (e.g. clicking on an Agoda "insider deal" email advertisement), as the conditions may not be the same as what is advertised in the room rate. In our case, it was the inclusion of the New Year's Eve gala; the hotel wanted to charge us for it despite the fact that it was clearly advertised as included in our rate. After we made it clear that whatever miscommunication had taken place between the hotel and Agoda wasn't our problem, eventually the manager took care of it. Overall, we wholeheartedly recommend the Horizon."

More about Central Business District

As capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu has a great mix of sightseeing and commercial attractions. Most of the action centers on the Segama Waterfront along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen. This is where Sword Fish Monument, Wisma Sabah & Gaya Centre and Wisma Merdeka operate.

South along the Waterfront toward the post office is a prominent shopping district where Central Market and KK Plaza are located. The Night Market and Gaya Street Sunday Market are even better places for guests of hotels in Kota Kinabalu to go shopping. Flanking hotels in this area are Wawasan Plaza, Api Api Centre, Asia City Complex and Star City Mall. All of these are close to the Kota Kinabalu Bus Terminal.

The city is also full of museums that explore the history of Borneo, both as a sultanate and a British interest. These offer insight into the island’s Islamic heritage and the exotic cultures of the indigenous tribes who live in the interior.

While most of the hotels and attractions are planted on the Kota Kinabalu City Waterfront, there are a few inland attractions like the Istana Negeri (state palace), the bird sanctuary and Signal Hill Observatory that are worth seeing.

The other major attractions off the waterfront are Sabah Golf and Country Club and Sutera Harbour Golf Club. The latter is near Kota Kinabalu Time Square and the Police Headquarters, where some of the best upscale accommodation in Kota Kinabalu is found.
