More about Central Kyoto

Central Kyoto is home to centuries-old imperial attractions, but it’s also the best place for shopping and nightlife. This is why most visitors prefer to book accommodation near Central Kyoto, where major sightseeing and commercial attractions are a short metro ride away.

The main tourist attraction in Central Kyoto is the Kyoto Imperial Palace. In fact, it’s so popular that visitors have to sign up for tours well in advance. The palace is set on expansive gardens and can be reached along with Kyoto International Manga Museum and Kyoto Prefectural Office via Marutamachi metro station. More modern sites like Kyoto City Office (Kyoto Shiyakusho Mae metro station) are also of interest, as they demonstrate the sort of construction that took place before WWII.

Shinkyogoku is the most popular shopping area. It has covered arcades like the Nishiki Food Market as well as the large-scale Kyoto BAL and Kawamamachi Opa shopping centers. Nearby is Daimaru Department Store on Nishikikoji Dori street. Kyoto’s thousand-year reign as imperial capital has fostered a thriving traditional arts scene, and many of the shopping centers specialize in handicrafts.

The number of hotels in Kyoto is staggering, and there are options suitable for both business and leisure travelers. Tourists enjoy staying in a traditional ryokan, which is a small, wooden inn set in a traditional neighborhood. Most ryokan include one or two traditional meals per day in the room price. The most convenient hotels are in walking distance of Nijomae, Karasuma Oike and other metro stations.
