Excellent stay”

I just booked one night but ended up staying for 3 nights. The building is historical and beautiful. It's old but very clean and well maintained, and nice and quiet all the time. The mattress is great and slept well every night. Close to the city centre. The staff is very helpful and told me where to go when I was looking at an information board in the hallway. I'll definitely come stay here when I visit Dunedin again!

They have pretty much everything you need there. Kitchen is well equipped and staffs are really helpful. Rooms are bright, warm and clean. They have accommodations for both long and short term stay. Location is closed to many things as well.

Excellent value for the money”

Great hostel for the money. Large old house with nice views. I also got upgraded from an 8 bed to a 4 bed dorm for free which was nice. There is some wear and tear and things that could use an upgrade/fixing/replacement. The mattress was not the most comfortable and the bunk bed I was in transferred a lot of the movement of the person below me. It is a bit of an uphill walk from the city center but that also means nice views. The wifi sometimes would be very slow and it didn't work the same in all of the common areas. However, for the price I paid it was an excellent value.

Substantially clean budget hotel”

I would recommend this to anyone visiting Duneden and looking for a budget accommodation ootion. Rooms are clean but I think they should invest a bit more to replace the toilets, at least the toilet seats becauze they are pretty old. Otherwise, it is a good place and especially it's very easy to get to the town centre and a bus stop is just 10 feet away.

Okay hostel, very cold!”

The hostel was quite central, took us about 10-15 min to walk to “central” where the restaurants where. The bed was comfortable and we had our room upstairs in a more quite area and also had the balcony right outside and our “own” kitchen together with the others who lived in the upper floor. The bedsheets were very old and worn out. The room was really cold, the whole building did not have any heat on. Since it was summertime now, it was bearable with the heating machine beside but if it would be winter, we could not be able to sleep here! The staff was okay, did not say much and mostly when we walked by the reception, the receptionist sat with the computer and did not even great. Very few kitchen tools in the upper kitchen.

Okay but stressful stay”

Property doesn't charge your card at check-in and makes several mistakes when gathering the info from it. I had several staff members after me through out my stay telling me that my card didn't work. And the demeanour was to claim that I didn't have enough money... completely ridiculous. In the end, after several attempts, I got one of my cards blocked by my bank and I had to make sure staff didn't misspell a number on the other. This saga lastest until my last day. This hostel is spacious and clean. Wi-Fi was spotty and there are plenty of common areas that are quiet. Lots of hostel staffers and work/holiday travellers live here making the atmosphere not ideal to welcome travellers. I also felt an unfriendliness as a traveller and felt like an outsider. Hostel is located on a very steep street and not the closest one to the main city center.

Acceptable”

The property should make it clear that you have to walk up a steep hill for 500 meters for 15 minutes. Bathrooms had toilets and showers from the 1920s with nothing that was replaced. No towels and very small room. The property listing was very misleading stating the property was located in the city center which was not the case. For future guests, Buyer beware! You would be better off to stay at properties that are located close to downtown.

Convenient location and facilities ”

The lodge is located at walking distance distance from Central Dunedin. Standard facilities, reasonably clean, nice drawing room. As often happens, there are no shelves or coat hangers (that would be a whopping NZD 0.50 each)in the room, so you have to lay your clothes on the floor.

The building is old, the stairs creak but it’s a solid place to stay. Chris, the manager, keeps the place clean and functioning smoothly. Water pressure is pretty good, wifi a bit slow, not a great number of plugs in the dorms. Beds are comfy. It’s halfway up quite a steep road.
