A beautifully quirky little gem”
The building, the hosts, the ambience
Not so much a hotel as a super guest house, this really is an old château, although parts have been rebuilt over the ages. It only has four guest rooms, each quite individual, and so the breakfast room is suitably small and intimate. Let's get one thing straight: this is a very old building and you will not find perfection here, although the owners have done their best to ensure that the things that matter work as they should and in that they have succeeded. However, things like creaky floors and doors are pretty much "de rigeur" in a place like this!
It's actually hard to describe what a pleasure it was staying here. The owners, Guy and Katherine, are charming friendly people who clearly have a passion for what they do.
The rooms are large; the beds very comfortable (well, ours was, anyway); a shower that worked very well; free WiFi that works well; the sense of living, albeit temporarily, in a place out of time; a breakfast that was full of local produce and little unexpected things, such as the bottle of maple syrup; the peace, tranquillity and (the only word I can think of that's close) romance of the setting.
At breakfast, we assumed it would be a good continental breakfast... but we were offered eggs and freshly-made pancakes. Not a big thing, perhaps, but a pleasant surprise.
There is no restaurant at the hotel although I understand that the do provide dinner, on request, on a Friday evening. The hosts (who, by the way speak perfectly good English) were very happy to recommend local restaurants and make a booking for us and their recommendation was excellent. They were also very happy to recommend places to visit and offer any other advice about the area.
It's not cheap but we don't begrudge them that - the cost of upkeep of a building like that is monumental. We were only there for one night this time but we will definitely be returning...
The chateau looked exactly like it does in the photos, absolutely breathtaking. The owners gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. The furnishings were new, rooms and bathrooms were clean, and beds comfortable. We had a room which had a balcony that overlooked the garden.
We wanted to have dinner in the chateau, but not feeling well, she was not able to prepare dinner, so helped us to make reservations in town. also gave us some recommendations for the restaurants and helped us to make a booking at another place when the restaurant we chose was fully booked.
The next morning, we were served a lovely breakfast in the beautiful dining room. The spread was delicious and there were so many choices that I was not able to try all of them!
We had such a lovely stay at the chateau, recommend this place to people looking for a beautiful, quiet and peaceful place!
