Built in 1929 and apparently was a mental hospital originally. Now it is a fully featured gem with roaring log fire in the impressive lounge area, toasty sauna, plunge pool and even its own cinema showing rolling classics for free. 'Tell them it's the most comfortable bed ever'. Job done. Shame about the weather and the full ski area, which doesn't open until the end of June, so only the beginners area Happy Valley was open in the freezing rain and gale force winds!

Very impress. Nice hotel, Nice room. Great factilities : swimming pool / sauna / mini theatre/snooker table and the most important is very good restaurants...… Very difficult to find good place to eat in that area.....family with children. Staffs are also perfect!!!! very professional with various nationality. Highly recommend....a bit high price but value for money.

Hubby and I stayed here for 2 nights on our self-drive contiki tour of NZ. Wow. This hotel is amazing. It rained on the first day so we took advantage of the hotels own cinema. The next day we headed up to the ski field to mess around in the snow. The breakfast was awesome! Never seen so much variety in my life - they even had a veg and fruit juicer, and nutella!!! My room was newly refurbished - only complaint is the radiator regulator/ nozzle was on backwards. So when we put it on 0 it was very hot, and 5 was off.

Unique location and experience”
It does have very unique location having all big famous mountains around. We enjoyed landscape so much. The hotel inside fitting and fit our are old and unique. A lot of old artworks. The room was small but clean. The high tea was good especially the savoury part. We tried swimming pool and sauna which were nice and clean too, no one else there. The only thing we didn’t enjoy was the steak from restaurant. They seemed not so good at cooking perfect medium rare steak; even worse, they tried to debate a well-done steak was a medium rare steak, which was very unprofessional. The other dishes were fine.

Everything was great except bar closed at 10pm on Saturday night, without any warning of last orders. Not able to get room service drinks after that time. Lots of training staff, not sure of things at times.

Great, iconic place! Well located, a little tired, but not really a problem. Staff were fantastic, nothing ever a problem.”
We went there as part of a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday. Had a great time! Food was exceptionally good. Bar and catering staff in particular could not have been more helpful. Absolutely nothing was a problem, including a last-minute request for a birthday cake. Would love to stay there again!!

The hotel is the best spot for a short hike to the Taranaki Falls, a climb to Ruapehu, skiing at the Alpines or taking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing adventure. The hot pool is the best place to go to after a day of activities. The movie room and lounge are best for relaxing! We enjoy staying here every year!

We were happy with our room, clean and everything we required. Most enjoyable dinner in the Ruapehu Room and happy with the price. Breakfast was a disappointment, we wanted a light breakfast but could not get breakfast for under $29 odd each. That was a rip off and placed a blot on our stay.
