Chiang Dao Rainbow Guesthouse
We really wanted to like this place: the owner seemed very friendly, the bungalows are nice and the view on the rice fields is amazing. But we had our first dinner at their restaurant and I became sick. I spent the whole night and the following day in bed. Food poisoning, it could happen anywhere after all. The following morning, we were supposed to have our breakfast at 8.30am, and we waiting at the empty restaurant for 30mn. The owner arrived at 9am, apologised, and prepared us a small breakfast. There was also a leak in the toilets that wet our bums each time we were going to the loo. And most of all: we decided to leave earlier as I was too sick to do anything. As we had booked 2 nights, we said we would pay it anyway. We received the bill and were shocked: the price for our dinner + one breakfast was 500 baths. And we had small portions. We thought that was unfair: as the place is isolated, you cannot go anywhere else unless you rent a motorbike (300 baths per day), so you have to pay for a dinner and a breakfast. Generally speaking, we felt Chiang Dao was very expensive, compared to Chiang Mai. Be prepared.
It was a beautiful room (I got upgraded to a beautiful bungalow with a private bathroom) in a beautiful setting (overlooking the rice paddies and the mountains). However, it was isolated. It was ~1 hour walk to the caves. It was not near any of the other resorts, so no access to their amenities (eg: restaurants and tours). This was also made worse by the owner/manager being MIA most of the time so I did not have access to the restaurant for dinner (he did give me breakfast) and had trouble getting a cab to leave. Great neighbours helped me get a cab and were about to go look for the owner in the morning. So beautiful place, but might be better for people with there on transportation.
Quiet place to rest”
I stayed one night, it was wonderful. You can have a free bike to run around, the staff is super helpful and nice! You can have an excellent dinner at the guesthouse and there is free breakfast! And the landscape around it is just stunning! I really loved this place!
it was nice, lovely host and great food. One major flaw however was finding the hostel, we got lost drove around in circles for an hour, asked several locals for directions. The Google Map location on Agoda.com is 2km from the actual location. Please be aware of this.
A Wonderful Experience”
Great place to stay”
We stayed here for one night and just loved it. Room and bathroom were clean. Staff was friendly. The owner of the place is very enthusiastic and fun to talk to. About 2 km from cave. Would definitely come back again if in te area. Only drawback was paying can fare of 150 baht to get there from town. That seems to be the going rate for any transportation from town to the resorts and guesthouses, so it's not specific to Rainbow.
Beautiful and peaceful”
Amazing, wonderful, and generally pretty awesome. I learned tons of stuff about Thailand and got too see some cool stuff in the surrounding area including caves, waterfalls, hot springs and hill tribe villages.
came back as we had promised ourselves. this time we stayed in the nice hut w. fan overlooking the rice fields and a small canal. this place is not fancy, but fairly comfortable and first of all in tune with nature. as always when visiting guest houses i had to take use of my ekstra memory foam matress, because the bed is hard as everywhere. the place has a plain, cosy restaurant where you can buy excellent food. this place is mind pleasing.
Beautiful location with great service”
Whilst the location is about an hours walk from the town or the caves it's worth it for the relaxing view over the rice fields and onto the mountain.
a room with a view”
Nice and quiet little place (only a few rooms, very tastefully furnished). The two bungalows have direct view on the rice paddies. Alltogether, the location is stunning. Little english spoken (smiles and signs work just as well).
Nice inexpensive bungalow accomodations”
For about $25/night, this hotel can't be beat. The two bungalows next to the rice patty are the best bet. Try to get the larger one ($2/more). Food at the onsite restaurant is pretty good
Basic but lovely bungalow”
Hotel has 2 comfortable, atmospheric bungalows next to rice patty. One is slightly larger than the other and the larger one is the best choice. Food in restaurant is above average, but not exceptional. Some English is spoken by staff. Print map from hotel website to easily find hotel.
fantastic... free bbq probided, great hosts and a lovely place
