loved it here, was right on the square and close to the night market. the family who owns the hostel are amazingly kind, friendly, and helpful. it is definitely way worth it for the price. I can't wait to stay here again!
Safe place for female solo traveler”
It was really great. I really like the staffs especially the woman at the front desk. She was really helpful and friendly. You can book a tour, rent a motorbike, dine in and do foot massage there. Location wise I dont really care because I like to explore the city by walking around so that wasnt a matter to me. Its located at the road side so its easy to get a tuk tuk, songteaw (i dont know how to spell it) and taxi. I would recommend this place to my other friends. definitely!
Very friendly owner”
I had a good stay at this hotel. The location is strategic, within walking distance to the Saturday Night Bazaar and not far from another nite bazaar. They have small bikes for rent hence make it easy for me to move around town. The owners are very friendly and helpful.
The perfect transit stay”
Stayed here one night in July 2017 to catch the direct bus to Kuala Lumpur. It really was the perfect transit stay: walking distance from Public Transportation and food, clean facilities, good internet and very friendly staff. Highly recommended.
The owner of the place was really nice and helpful, so was the staff. However the place itself has never seen a cleaning hand. The towels were filthy and never washed. The space was filled with old furniture and other things collecting dust. The room did not have aircon but also there was no window for clean air. Everything was alright compared to what happened at night. While laying on the bed I noticed that something was constantly biting me and it was not mosquito because it was on my back underneath my clothes. When I looked at the pillow case, there were bed bugs that also bit my face! This was when my whole body was already in bites and marks from scratches. I realized that at that point, I needed to leave this place! Me and other traveler who also stayed in the room gathered all our stuff and went to speak to the manager, at first he tried to say that there were no bed bugs, but after i showed him my bites, it was obvious he could not deny any longer. Then, he said he did not have any other rooms, but after we said we were going to another hostel, he suddenly has a room. Later on he offered to steam clothes and our bags with water steamer! (Which does not kill bed bugs) but we proceeded. When I found another hotel, he refused to drive us at 1 am to the place that was 1 km away! So we walked at night. Overall, he did not only refund us the place, drive us to the hostel, but also made money through commission as we ordered elephant tour through him! All he said was that we, foreigners, think that all Thai people are dirty! That has nothing to do with the fact that there were bed bugs in his hostel! Also, we did no only have to spend hours of our night at the washing place cleaning ALL our belongings and spending our money on the laundry, but also pay for an expensive hotel, because this was our only option of 24h check in hotels. Even if he did refund us our 3$, it would be nothing compared to 20$ hotel + 20$ laundry + no sleep at night and most of all mental
All of the staff are really friendly and nice, whatever tourist information do you want to get they have it and if they don't they are going to look for it. They do bookings to everywhere, the owner of the hostel is always around so any problem or question he is a really nice person who is 100% willing to solve any inconvenient that you can have.
Wonderful staff good rooms for price. Perfect location next to the old city and near 3 night markets”
Pro- Amazing staff with lots of info for driving /trips to different locations. Good breakfasts. Owner allows you to leave bags in the hostel for a couple of days if you want to travel light for a bit to different cities. Safe clean rooms and sitting area. Funny bird as you walk in and out who will say many different phrases and greet you. Parking for your scooter and a few bikes for rent Con- bathroom is ocasionally wet from showers and some beds are slightly uncomfortable. My stay- I spent roughly 10 days at the hostel. And traveled out of chaingmai for days at a time. When i got back all my items were untouched and exactly as i left them. The owner gave lots of advice on what to see along the way what to be careful for and gave good directions to local attractions, markets and destinations outside chiang mai. I loved my time at the chiangmai backpack house and would highly recommend for non luxurious solo or group travel.
.Great location (at the mouth of Chiang Mai's Old City so pretty central). Good vibe. It is not a 4-5 stars hotel so don't expect the rooms to be of high quality even though they are pretty neat. Quality hosts and very good place to chill out
Great price, great location, good stay”
The stay was good. I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. When checking in they couldn't find my reservation but fixed it instantly, super awesome & helpful! It has old cafeteria looking floors & grungy walls... But who cares?!? The bed was quite comfy & the fan was alright. I feel you can pay the same price for an airconditioned room so I perfer that. You can lock valuables under the bed, but the main door doesn't lock from the outside. It was always open when everyone was away which was odd. The bathroom was good but sometimes the shower would backup... Still not a big deal! Overall I had a great stay!
I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff make this place very enjoyable. I was sick for a part of my time there and they went out of their way to accommodate me. The location was great - two minute walk to a food stalls at night and ten minute walk into center of the big square with many shops. The facilities were basic, but very clean and tidy. I don't think you can get a better hostel for the cheap price. I definitely recommend!
Loved this place!”
My stay at Chiangmai backpack house was great! The owners are so kind and helpful. I really enjoyed meeting them. They also rented a motor scooter to me for very cheap, and taught me how to ride it confidently. The location is perfect in old city for walking and right near the markets.
Amazing staff and great value accomodation”
I stayed several times at Chiangmai Backpack House over the past 2 weeks. I kept coming back because the owners are such lovely, accommodating people! The dorms are very good value too. The female dorm was quiet, the beds are quite comfortable and it's very safe as each bed as a locked space (bring your own padlock). The rooms giving on the street are more noisy but nothing unbearable. Cleanliness was on par with what I've seen in most budget places in Thailand : not the best, but nothing horrible either. Wifi was good most of the time, though it slowed down at peak hours. The location is quite alright : Chiang Mai's old city (which is where most things to visit are) is really not that big. Very cheap food at Chiang Mai's gate, and very close to the Saturday Night Market. I booked a tour with them (the walking only tour offered by Panda Tours) and they gave me a good deal. The tour itself wasn't the best but that's not the hostel's fault. I could leave my bag with them during the stay. You can also book a minivan for Pai. Efficient laundry service. I would definitely go back there if I ever come back to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai amaze”
Oil was amazing! She was always available and willing to help my friend and I out - anything from where to eat, discounts on activities, and advice on getting around northern Thailand. She is what made our stay in Chiang Mai so great.
Very welcoming ”
Toni and his wife were very pleasant during my stay. They pretty much offered all service from the hostel and helped me with any questions I had. The room was quite big and came with individual space to store our belongings. The only con was the hotel cleanliness. But for the service that was provided and price, it was very well worth it.
Great value for money!!!!”
I stayed there for a whole week after noticing the advantages of this place. Most of all I enjoyed the talks with the owners who - besides that - never hesitate to give great and helpful advice or hints to activities and facilities etc. Moreover this is a perfect place for solo travellers because you can meet lots of other travellers all day long in the nice entrance area. The Chiang Mai Backpack House is situated on the road just outside the old city walls but when staying in the dorm I didn't hear any of the street noises. A walk to the centre of the city and to a huge variety of restaurants and sights takes only a few minutes. A small street market is just a 1 minute walk to the other side of the street and down the road you can find a perfect little french bakery with very good coffee (Baan Bakery)!!! The common areas, dorms and bathrooms are clean even if it is not spotlessly. But for the offered price I cannot expect the rooms to be cleaned every single day and it depends on the cleanliness of the guests as well!!! You get a towel and clean linen. I didn't eat there a lot but coffee and snacks are all right. I wouldn't hesitate to book there again! Thank you for the great time in Chiang Mai!!!
Great staff and value”
Fabulous. Staff was friendly, extremely helpful. Really friendly little cafe area for hanging out. Great location near the Saturday walking street, bit of a hike for the rest of the sights around town, but fantastic as long as it's not boiling out. Rooms, beds, bathrooms were clean and simple. Great value.
Stay here! ”
Good stay, cheap, clean, people running it are great. Safe place if ur a lone female traveller. The guy makes sure ur looked after. Can arrange tours as wel and motorbike rental. There's a simple food restaurant there too. Stay here. It's simple yet great.
worth for the money”
Love the location of the hostel - 3 mins walk to the local market. The boss is really friendly to tell me the story of Loy Kathrong, thank you :) The only suggestion I would give is maybe they should clean the dorm frequently. I won't say the dorm is not clean, yet I believe there are still some room of improvement. Anyway I have nothing to complain with its price! ps. their breakfast is 5 star hotel standard!
Staff was quiet but was nice enough to try helping when asked. Dorm room on the top floor facing the street, which was extremely noisy. Traffic all night non-stop. I can fall asleep at night clubs with crazy music but was waken up 6 to 7 times in the night. Mosquito net not working well and would be extremely hot when the balcony door was closed. We stayed at 3 different hostels in Chiang Mai with similar price and this is the worst... Mostly because of the noise. Not sure if rooms not facing the street would be better but since the walls and doors are thin I don't think there would be much difference.
great hostel with great staff”
As soon as we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome. Showed to our room, we had book a double private room which was spacious and clean. The hostel is just a 2 minute walk from the old city walls with markets and restaurants nearby. We spoke to our host Amy and the owner of the hostel throughout our stay and they were great.
