Good location and excellent staff but no meal facilities ”
The location of the hotel is at the center of the city and near with the bus stop, however, it is more convenient if they also offer a free breakfast or priced meals in their facilities. We travelled with a kid always and its a hassle free for us if we could just order a meal from the hotel instead of buying some food outside.

When Essex opens again....”
We'd be more than willing to stay there again. The location is fabulous--close to everything we were interested in. However, Essex Inn shut down the day we left for a 6 to 12 month overhaul. It will be interesting to see the changes as well as the price point when it is completed.

Great location - deluxe is a bust”
Got the double delux room and it wasn’t very “delux” both beds were less than an arm width apart. The location of the hotel was great but the air unit for the room only had 3 settings auto, continuous, or off. You couldn’t pick the actual temperature. So we were stiffling with the air continuously running. Asked the front desk and they said to open the window, but it’s on a busy street, no window screens, and there was construction every day starting no later than 7:30 am. Last night were able to get a fan so we greatly thank the staff for that. Location was the best part of this hotel, but it wasn’t the greatest for sleep or comfort. Overall very tiny room, squeaky beds, and lots of carryover noise from the hallways/outside the building. Overall a 3.5 star rating for me.

The staff is very very accommodating . The room had a very small bathroom but it was okay. The bed and pillows are very comfy. The thing is they are a bit far from stores so that’s a little downside but they have lists of restaurants that are near them. Millenium park would be like 15min walk. It would be nice for summer. My stay here was nice, I like it. 😊

Good location”
Nice hotel licated in good location, not far from Harrison subway station. Moreover, there are at least 3 buses pass through the hotel. 3 minutes walk to 7eleven minimart, 5 minutes walk to subway station, 8 minutes walk to Harold Chilken and many QSR nearby. Room space is very wide but restroom a little small.

They are shutting down for renovation-- I'd say, they should consider shutting it down permanently ”
The room was absolutely gross -- there was a musty smell in the lobby, hallways and the room, carpet was soggy, some lamps were not working, and a roach visited us in the bathroom. Their pillows were worse than nothing. They were so under-staffed and everyone looked so tired. To top off their lack of service, when checking out they informed us the hotel would be closing for the day and they would not be able to store luggage, forcing us to lug it around until evening.

It was a great location and the staff was nice but because it was about to be closed for renovations it was basically in total disrepair. Fauctes were leaking and they didn't give us blankets or towels in till we asked for them.

Good location - rooms need some work ”
The location of this property was very convenient. However, the whole place seems small and cramped. The rooms could use some work - ours had peeling wallpaper, rusty air vent and shower curtain rod, and a remote control for the TV that partially worked. Also, we had three people in a double full room, but were only given two bath towels every day. There’s probably a better hotel nearby for the money.

Not worth of money charged”
Hi Very sorry to say as I lost my Ray-ban glasses on the first day. When I complained to reception, they responded without checking that our housing staff will not do this. No Microwave in the hotel. On the check-in reception very rough response, which is not good for any customer service business. I will never recommend nor stay in future in this hotel anymore. No value for money. Sorry, but no personal remarks. This is our genuine observation. Thank you, Regards/Afroz

The hotel had lack of staff (the staff that was working were polite and helpful) the hotel was about to be closed for remodeling and the staff was told they were being let go due to the new company coming in. Needless to say, the hotel was not clean, our room was so dirty we did not take our shoes off. The walls had either crayon or really old silly staring all over, no safe, our blankets were so old they were balled up from being washed too many times. The couch in or room was so dirty it was shiny from embedded dirt. Our shower was so clogged it looked like we took a bath after a shower. Hopefully the new company taking over will do better care/maintenance.

Loved it. Peet’s coffee just behind for breakfasts. Hilton next door for restaurant. 20 mins walk to Shedd aquarium. Downside is that the carpets are old and seemingly unhygienic. Bathroom is small and drainage in the tub could be slow.

I can understand they have no parking nor breakfast because they don't have a parking structure or a restaurant. But slippers and toothpaste are just something that can be purchased in a store! It reflects that they don't give a sh i t about your living experience.

Good, but needs a little work”
Hotel was clean. Staff was very friendly. Great location. Bathrooms were small. There was barely enough to open the door without wedging myself in between the counter and toilet. The temperature in the shower was awful - when set to a temperature, it fluctuated between very hot and very cold frequently. We were expecting a small restaurant, or at least a bar in the hotel, but that wasn't a dealbreaker since the downtown area offered so much.

Location, location, location...”
Incredible location in the heart of downtown Chicago. Located right on N Michigan Avenue, across the street from Millennium Park, and within walking distance from all the restaurants and major downtown attractions, including The Navy Pier and Cloud Gate. The hotel itself looks modern yet the rooms were a bit dated. If you're anything like me, you won't be spending much time in the room. You'd be hard pressed to find a better location or deal. Don't hesitate. Just book your stay and enjoy Chicago!

Our Time at Essex Inn”
Without question, the staff at Essex Inn are beyond top notch and could fare well in a World Class hotel. Michelle, as previously noted, is warm, kind, professional and goes the extra 5 miles to ensure comfort. I adore her. High marks for Fairis as well as a wonderful person and as helpful as can be. The entire staff were lovely. Housekeeping did their job well as the linens and towels were fresh and immaculate. In all honesty, the website pictures are a bit misleading as the hotel appears far more updated than it is. True, the shower runs hot and cold. Fair, the rooms could fare well with new wallpaper, a coat of paint and new carpet. Yes, the climate is not controllable. The second floor shows well with its updated fitness center and corporate rooms. If you want modern and perfect ( I know, who doesn't?!) this is not the place for you. But for budget-conscious travellers, this hotel is centrally located, immaculate and the staff make it fabulous. We would definitely return!!!!!

The Essex Inn proved to be a great choice for us on our first visit to Chicago. It is centrally located so some of the main attractions e.g. Millennium Park and The Chicago Art Institute are easily walkable. The hotel was very clean and staff extremely helpful and knowledgable. The only thing lacking was the restaurant, which was under renovation.

Just stayed 5 nights at Chicago's Essex Inn, in a 2 double bed room. Good location on Michigan across from Grant Park. No frills hotel, but it had everything we needed: quiet rooms, comfy beds, and air conditioning that worked perfect during Chicago's recent heat wave. Service was also excellent from all Essex staff, including front desk, cleaning and maintenance staff (maintenance staff quickly came to help us open a bottle of wine when our corkscrew broke in the cork). I'd stay there again, and recommend it to friends.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for Valentine's Day and loved it! Great prices, excellent above and beyond customer service, and beautiful rooms with a view! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone going to downtown Chicago.

Misleading ”
I had one night left in Chicago and I wanted to treat myself to a luxurious night in a modern downtown hotel with a view and an indoor pool. All of the reviews sounded great and the pictures were pleasing. Damn was I mislead! The entire exterior of the hotel is under construction and the pool was closed due to the construction. Agoda and the Essex Inn need to let their guests know of all this with some updated pictures and a clear statement about the construction! I didn't get a VIEW or a POOL and the staff were friendly but just ok. Overall, I felt mislead and let down.
