Cheap and central, friendly and helpful staff”
Great staff, there was an issue with my booking and the staff went out of their way to resolve it to my satiafaction. Great central location but make sure you have good ear plugs Mitchell St very noisy at night
Good location, nice spa pools, bad kitchen”
Plus: Location is right by the main streetnext to a supermarket and bars etc but you walk 15 min to the lagoon, the sun deck with two spa pools and sun beds is great, we were lucky we got a 4 bed dorm on our own with 2 people and aircondition, got refunded after the AC didnt work for 1 night Minus: the kitchen is not well equipped at all, really basic
Good location hostel”
Located just across crocodile cove and nearby airport shuttle stop hence convenient for arrival early in morning or catching early morning flight like the case of mine. Wifi can be improved as can not receive signal in room and occasionally have interruption while using wifi.
Unfortunately didnt get to stay here as it was temporary closed for renovation. Was surprised and puzzled for a while upon arriivinh at the hostel. However, was diverted to Youth Shack down the road. Staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Check in was at ease. I rented a bath towel and it was worthy as clean and comfy. Crowd was cool. Impressed with the room condition; in yerms of hygiene, structure and facilities. The hostel provided free breakfast but didn’t get to try it. Perhaps could consider extending the breakfast hour. Would definitely stay here again if I make a return trip to Darwin.
Awesome value for the money!”
Staff is bloody friendly! Wirlpools@rooftop! Nice kitchen! (No oven though), room airconditioned (but little dodgy), toilets very clean!, location is just perfect (besides coles and esplanade) Will definitely come again!
Dirty, loud and not friendly”
Public areas are quite dirty. Staff was very unhelpful. They do not know Darwin and seem not to care at all. They say 24 hour reception, but it is not true - you have to call night reception and wait for him to come over if you check out before 6 AM. It is right in the middle of backpacker street - so all night you are in the front row seats for all fights and drunk screams. Overall Darwin hotels and not good value for money - but this one is exceptionally bad, hostel across the street is much better.
disappointing customer service”
was disappointing to be kept waiting an hour or so to be checked in @ 1.30 Am and accosted by drunken passers by.finally got into bed at 3am.not good enough to have 1 night manager running 2 places imo.really poor customer service
well located backpaker hostel in heart of darwin”
i enjoyed my stay at chillis the staff were friendly and helpful.the rooms were clean and well designed for dorms. It was only a 2 minute walk to the Coles supermarket next door and restaurants in mitchell street all walking distance. The only fault i could find was the loud music blaring out all night every night but this was one of the quieter backpackers compared to the others.
centrally located friendly hostel”
it was adequate.for the money and facilities it was reasonable value for money. It is well located in mitchell street close to all the bars and restaurants. It also has a Coles supermarket practically next door which is convenient for those doing their own meals etc
Great location. Very friendly staff. Unfortunately, the kitchen and some common areas are not so clean. It is a very busy hostel. Please bring your own towel, soap, sleeping bag. They just provide sheets and pillow case. Wifi is good.
Short Getaway to relax and unwind”
It's a common backpackers hostel. Its location is perfect since all you needs is just a walk away. They provide free bread and hot tea/coffee for breakfast. Just a tip, bring your own utensils if you are staying here as this is a dorm style. You can do your cooking, laundry and they also have ref for storing your food for longer stay. The room I stay is good for 4 persons.
Cheap, budget, basic”
I had a private room with shared bathroom but the experience was very basic. This hostel is great if you want a no frills cheap as experience - you may as we'll go for a dorm room as the facilities shared for a private room are the same but you pay three times the price. If looking for a cheaper private room spend an extra 40 bucks and go for a travelodge or cheap motel instead. That said this hostel is in a brilliant location and the staff will help with airport transfers etc. plus, a good place to meet other travellers.
Just a so so experience.”
This is quite a noisy hostel since many working holiday youngster are staying here for longer terms. The double deck bed is a bit too high. it is a bit difficult to climb up to the upper level as the gap of the stair case is quite big. That was smell in the room as well.
Appropriate choice for backpackers”
. Having stayed at hostels, Chilli's is far more suitable for a backpacker looking for a quieter (but still not quiet) night. If you want the party scene, go for the Youth Shack which has a bar inside. This is not the type of place to stay if your looking for comfort, quiet or really anything, but the cheapest room possible. so many may be drawn to stay here, but I would strongly recommend you scope out one of the other great deals on Agoda for accommodation As flights in Darwin can arrive and depart at all times of the night, Mitchell St can be a pretty scary place to stand and wait for someone to come and let you in to the hostel at 2am in the morning. If you are arriving outside of the reception hours, I would recommend obtaining the night manager's number prior to arrival so that they are ready for you when you arrive. Chilli's has a no alcohol policy in all rooms, which I think is a good thing! Shared bathrooms are standard in all rooms.
dorm room in budget hostel”
standard as most backpackers, dorm bed was ok, places to hang out, fairly secure. close to the bars etc. of course if you want anything more than that you have to pay for it. just stayed the one night. does what it says on the tin.
Poor facilities for late check-in”
Chilli Backpackers provides a decent clean room at reasonable cost for Australian prices. However, it is poorly organised for late check-ins. I arrived on a late flight and was at the hotel about 12am. The doors were locked with a sign telling klate arrivals to call a 1-800 number. (I had a mobile phone so was able to call the number.) However, e callw as diverted to a message bank and despite leaving a message, there was no return call. Fortunately, a guest entered the hotel a few minutes later and directed me to another hotel a few doors down with the same owners. A man finally turned up, told me to 'Wait!" with all my luggage, shut the door, and eventually returned to accompany me back to Chilli Backpackers. No excuse or apology was offered nor any assitance with luggage. At chek-in he remained curt and impolite. If it had not been for the 2 young women at check out the following morning and for the apology they offered, staff rating would have been "1". Incidentally, on the list of information and rules that is handed to you on check-in, the late night number to call is different from the number on the door when guests arrive. Do not recommend booking Cillis Backpackers if you are arriving late -- you may not be able to get in unless a fellow guest happens to walk by.
chillies and the youthshack it's sister hostel were both great.. however if you are staying in chillies and want a quiet night ask for a room near the carpark.. our first night was a sleepless night but staff were great and gave us a different room the next night... we booked our tours from there travel desk and we got a v.good deal...
Well ran backpacker”
Darwin very busy city, always background noise at night and often partying sometimes till 5am. Shared-sex showers, not really family friendly, unless children almost grown. Brilliant cheap shared rooms for backpackers, with shared facilities, eg kitchen/dining area and laundry
Hostel style through and through: rough around the”
overall was fine, and convenient as it's right in the middle of the bar and club area. so the buzz is brilliant. I wouldn't say the staff are friendly really: some are great, and some are downright rude when you have 'special request'. Try harder guys.
location is perfect, near bus station, malls, bars. internet is free and fast the only thing i wonder is cannot find a spoon in kitchen, weird
