Location is great, rooms are clean, and free WiFi”

Free wifi, large rooms, good cold A/C.

Let me start by saying I absolutely hate Malaysia and Penang in particular. I have traveled to 27 countries and this is the last place on Earth I want to be. However, as I live and work in Thailand, I have to travel to Penang occasionally for business and when I do, I need an oasis of a room to keep me comfortable and happy during the days I'm stuck there. The Chulia Heritage Hotel met my needs and exceeded my expectations. I used to stay at the CitiTel, but it has gone downhill and they have no wifi internet, so I tried the Chulia Heritage this time instead. The rooms are spacious, clean, cool with high ceilings and strong A/C. The bed was comfy with nice linens. The water heaters don't work so well, but I'm picky in that regard and like really hot, hot showers. The staff there are amazingly friendly for such an unfriendly town and even let me check out late with no charge. The only down side was the rooms have high windows that face the interior of the hotel and let light in the room all hours of the night - bring sleep shades if you need a dark room! All in all, a great place to stay if you need to be in the Chulia Street area. For the price, it can't be beat in my book - will stay there again if I have the unfortunate need to go back to Penang.

Reccomended Hotel To Stay”

love all the with color and its cleanliness

chulia hotel is one of the recommended hotel for you to stay in penang. it is located near the restaurant, money changer and only 15 minutes walking to komtar included the rapid bus terminal. there is also rapid bus past in front of it. for example rapid no 101 destination penang national park, toy museum, etc.. chulia also located in georgetown. so you can wall around georgetown from chulia. this hotel is dominated by white colour. so clean.. if you booked this hotel with share bathroom, don't worry! the bathroom is so clean. the service is nice. they will welcome you with smile anytime you ask.. i think it's the plus point of this hotel. so don't hesitate for chosing chulia heritage hotel as a place for you to stay in penang..

Quaint Dignified Hotel with Great Location”

Accessible Location within Walking Distance of Key Attractions in Georgetown, Clean Rooms, Good Service

Chulia Heritage Hotel offers a great accomodation choice if you are someone who is not into the glitz and flashy hotels. It is quaint, quiet and dignified and allows guests to stay in peace without the sometimes overbearing presence of service staff. The staff leaves you alone but is more than ready to assist if one has any queries. Its location at Chulia Street is excellent, within the 15-20 minutes walking distance of shopping malls in Komtar, Cheong Tze Fatt Mansion, seafood restaurants, the waterfront etc. One suggestion for improvement would be for the the hotel to provide toothbrushes/toothpaste for travellers who did not bring theirs and and for the hotel to provide guided tours of the city or for trips to places like Penang Hill etc that requires more than walking. Additional value-adding services would be the provision of information such as what buses to take if we are going to places e.g. Penang Hill, Queensbay Mall and where are the bus-stops approximately. These will definitely enhance customer experience at Chulia Heritage Hotel.

Spot on location with heritage feel”

Heritage feel, spot on location, wifi connection

We love our stay at the Chulia Heritage Hotel. The location is very convenient, close by to street food hawkers and the heritage district. The hotel has a nice heritage feel. The room is small but clean and neat. Upon check-in late evening, the front desk was nice and helpful. We were even given an upgrade to deluxe from our standard room. We were going for a medical appointment in the next morning, the staff was kind enough to explain the direction and how the busses system work in Penang. With an exception when we were about to check out on Monday morning, we asked a different staff if we could have late check-out. We were told that was not possible because the hotel was fully booked. But when we asked if we can stay additional nite, suddenly the room was available, so hotel was not actually fully booked. It would be nice for the staff just to explain that late check out was not a policy, and that additional charge applied for check out late than 12pm.

Simple and comfortable”

price, location and cleanliness

I'm quite satisfied with my stay at the hotel. My friend and I stayed in Chulia Heritage Hotel for 3 nights, and we were really quite satisfied with the facilities. The room is clean, and the toilet and shower facilities, though small, was quite well appointed. The location might be a little difficult to find, seeing that the driveway is between 2 blocks of shophouses, but with a little familiarization, it's no issue at all. Practically everything that a visitor to Penang wants can be found within walking distance. Motorbike and day trip hires, public buses run through Chulia Street or along Jln Penang a hop and a skip away, and food is readily available. The internet is fast, at least from my phone, and while the walls might be just a little thin, the location of the hotel means that you won't be disturbed by the surroundings anyway. An excellent budget hotel!

Great Hotel - lovely staff”

Cleanliness and location

two friends and i stayed at chulia heritage hotel (triple room, shared bathroom) the first weekend of august 2011. it's a fantastic place to stay -- cheap and clean, and great staff. kolika and the other staff member (a guy, wears glasses) who works the front desk are very helpful. we got there after midnight and there was a power outage, for which they apologized profusely. they rolled with it and quickly checked us in using flashlights! the power came on shortly thereafter. when we checked out, they refunded us 10% without us even complaining about it, the location is close to everything -- penang road, little india, komtar, etc. if i come back to penang again, i will stay here.

Great find near Georgetown old area.”

Fantastic staff and great location with easy walking to all the interesting sites in Georgetown.

i booked at chulia heritage hotel after reading reviews and when i saw the room i thought i had made a mistake. it is small with small ensuite bathroom but it was clean. over the 4 days i was there i really came to appreciate why the hotel had recieved good reviews. the staff are helpful and friendly, the rooms are clean and a cool escape from the hot penang sun, the location is awesome with an easy walk to wonderful historical buildings and amazing places to eat (hawker food, restaurants). i would definitely go back again.

Relaxing”

Simple layout, fuss free and good customer service.

It was my first visit to Penang and i didn't know where to go and what to do. Then i came to realize that Georgetown is the place to go and went about choosing an accommodation for my 4D3N stay with my girlfriend. After reading up the reviews and looking through the pictures, we narrowed down to a few hotels and decided on Chulia Heritage Hotel. And we were not disappointed one bit. What got us attracted to this hotel was the price and the 'feel' of the hotel when we were browsing through the pictures. We were looking for something laid back and this hotel fits the bill. The hotel staff were friendly and attended to our requests efficiently. This hotel is also well located as it is in the middle of the all places of interests in Georgetown. Give it a try. And you probably will not be disappointed too.

Clean Comfort in White”

Location, spotless, polite staff

Chulia Heritage Hotel is located in the Chinatown area of Georgetown. There are many places of interest within walking distance: historic buildings, temples, restaurants and hawker stands. Buses run every 5-10 minutes past the hotel and the staff can summon taxis for longer trips. Rooms are good-sized, with white walls, linens and minimalist decor. The place is spotless and the staff appears to be always busy cleaning. The mood is calm in the lobby and adjacent lounge. Staff speak English and Mandarin, able to give directions and suggestions. My room on the ground floor was quiet and with TV, internet and AC, I was very comfortable.

Great hotel in a great location !”

Location, cleanliness, staff.

Great Hotel, with clean fresh rooms all in white, a great shower, OK WIFI and a great atmosphere. One of the great things is the location, firstly in the Penang Heritage area and then back off the street, therefore no street noise. We only stayed overnight but would have liked to have stayed a few more days. Restaurants, bars, 711 etc are just around the corner. Try not to arrive to Penang during peak hour traffic, 50 minutes from the airport to get to the hotel but only 25 minutes to get back. We loved it and definitely recommend the Chulia Heritage Hotel.

Plenty of charm with lovely architecture”

very near to various site seeing places and great Penang food

We loved our stay at Chulia Heritage Hotel – the architecture, charm and tranquillity of its surroundings. Nestled in the heart of city, it allows us the flexibility of moving around town easily without much hassle. For us, Chulia Heritage Hotel offers clean and affordable accommodation at a reasonable price. Our room and private bathroom, even though small, offers everything we need for our stay. Most certainly, Chulia Heritage Hotel will always be our choice whenever we visit the Pearl of the Orient. It is truly our home away from home.

Decent room and nice location”

Clean and tidy, close to hawker street

It was a nice experience to stay in the Chulia Heritage Hotel. The hotel is conveniently located in Georgetown, where you can easily reach the nearby famous spots. We chose the standard double room to stay with, as we didn't want to share the public bathroom. It was overall a decent, tidy and comfortable room. Although the hotel is close to the street, we couldn't hear any noise at night. The only drawback is it takes a while for us to find the entrance of the hotel. I would certainly choose to stay in Chulia again if I visit Penang next time.

Great place with alot of potential”

Very clean rooms, fantastic location, very reasonable pricing

The Chulia Heritage hotel is still undergoing it's upgrading / beautifying works when we were there. Whilst the room sound insulation isn't the best, the price, ambience, cleanliness and location more than make up for the worth of our stay. Fantastic place for tourist visitors as you will spend most of the day touring Penang and coming back only at night to sleep. The staff tending to the hotel are very friendly and made our stay feel very much at home. Kokila, who tended to us then was warm, friendly and very helpful.

Hotel is nice”

Price of room is good and the full cable TV

Foremost we didn't know that there is attached toilets for downstairs room at Chulia Heritage. We stayed at the 1st floor where we have to shared bathroom. perhaps in future bookings we can see the difference in the e-booking. Also the setback is, in the evening kids are running around the shared common hall when there is already signed posted do not run due to the floor are wood and the effect of rubbling sounds are great but doesn't see the security doing anything to stop this running. Other than that we are very pleased. One more thing I would like to bring out which I have indicated waiting for Agoda to reply is I did not received any vouchers for my bookings for this trip both for Chulia Heritage and Concorde Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. I have also booked through Agoda for this coming Friday 21 Dec at Zon Hotel in Johor Bahru and also did not receive any voucher but just the confirmation number. This is due the front desk counter of the hotel asked me but I tell them I did not have but manage to get it process. Hope you can enligthen me on this. Thank you.

affordable heritage hotel in central unesco area”

Location and Price

i had stayed in a hostel for the 3 nights prior. chulia heritage hotel was near 3 times the hostel price but 100 times better. never been so relieved. an affordable luxury in the central unesco area on the busy chulia street. the hotel sits back from the main road so no worries about noise of traffic. just a short walk to little india etc. no where else i would rather stay. i have stayed in georgetown heritage hotel's before and found they tend to be beat up and haggard when low priced. chulia heritage is not.

Just perfect”

It's new.

We took the 3 sharing superior room which comes with shared bathroom. This might be new to some, but I can assure you that it is completely OK, given that the price of the room is really affordable. They have people cleaning the bathrooms, and doing housekeeping whole day long from what I've seen for myself. It served its purpose as a budget hotel. Furthermore it's new and shiny. The hotel is not quite visible from the main road. If you are walking on Lebih Chulia, towards Penang Road, keep and eye for Yeng Keng hotel on your right. Once you met Yeng Keng, keep walking for another 3 minutes and you will meet with an alley which leads to Chulia Heritage Hotel. It is a big white mansion-like building. I spotted a security guard doing his rounds 24-hours a day around the compound, so my guess they pay attention to security quite seriously. Previous feedback about the noisy floors, well, they are right. But if you would try to understand the nature of construction of this mansion - Floors are made of strong woods (which is quite typical in the foundation of heritage mansions like Chulia's), you would probably live with the idea of it, and still have a peaceful night sleep afterall. It doesn't bother us much as people would be considerate enough not to purposely bang their foot everytime they need to walk, except for kids maybe. Overall, Chulia is a great place. Walking distance to almost all heritage/interesting sites in Georgetown. Excellent wifi too.

Comfortable stay, great value for money”

Central location, walking distance to most must-see spots, clean & comfy, and friendly, accommodating staff.

We were there for a few days, but spent most of our time out and about - great because the hotel is so centrally located, we could plan mid-day breaks back at the hotel in between sightseeing and trying all the amazing food. We got a room that was clean, more spacious than we thought, an a/c that worked well despite the island heat, but zero view - which was fine cos we only ever returned for rest or shower anyway. Internet was fast, so that's great. And delicious street food practically at our doorstep every evening. The famous Penang Road chendol + asam laksa, Line Clear nasi kandar, tres chic China House and Prangin Mall (where we went to do our hair) were all within a 10-min walking distance. There's a 7-11 just a couple blocks away, and a backpacker joint with a simple but delicious bacon sandwich (with real pork bacon! :) Only couple things I wished was better: 1) that something is done about the floorboards upstairs. We stayed in a room downstairs and would quite often be woken up by the stomping of feet upstairs. I understand it's an old house and that's the nature of it. But perhaps extra thick carpeting might do the trick? I never went upstairs so I don't know if that's already done - that's for you guys to figure out. 2) a pool would have been amazing to cool down in the afternoons, but it's not a big deal. We could still cool down and catch 40winks in the room. Overall, for the price we paid, the hotel surpassed our expectations. Sure, it's not a swanky hotel, but for the average traveller who is looking for function over aesthetics, it meets all the criteria and more. Keep it up Chulia Heritage Hotel!

Compact, worth for money”

Clean, strategic location, nice interior

The purpose of my trip to Penang is to do cafe hoping and wandering around the heritage streets, and Chulia Heritage Hotel has the strategic location to access it all. Walking distance to the old shops, old restaurants, they even have bicycles available! It was build behind an alley, so you have a comfort and private staying place. I like the lobby as it keeps the interior of this house, and the rooms is just nice for two. Air-cond functions well, simple bathroom which is just nice for me. Parking lots avaialble for customer, which is better than park at roadside like other hostels. Security guards aree friendly to introduce whats good for the local. Awesome!

Friendly staff, clean room, great location

this hotel is the best 3 star hotel you can get in georgetown. the service was excellent. the staff always serve you with a smile. the rooms are small but clean. the toilet is designed as a wet shower room. taking a shower will make the toilet wet, so you have to place your dry clothes and towel outside. the hotel is just 7 mins walk from komtar (bus interchange). accessibility is our priority, thus, staying in this hotel allows us to go anywhere in penang through komtar. great hawker food can be found along the chulia street & penang street (mostly chinese and indian food). provision shops like 7 eleven are there for your convenience. i strongly recommend this hotel as it gives you a unique experience (it's not like any other budget hotels).

Comfortable Stay”

Checked into room 111 upon arrival, room smell bad at first. Thought it will wear off if air conditioner is switch on but the smell of sewage is strong throughout the night. The next day we requested for a room change, the helpful staff check us into room 105. The air conditioner sound is loud and isn't cold at all. No offence but the strong smell of incense smoke can be annoying to customer who needs a longer rest before checking out. I do hope Chulia Heritage Hotel can do some amendments such as the gap on the lower part of the door can be smaller (mosquito and smoke can enter thru the gap). Also the smell of the room as well as the air conditioner. Will definitely recommend friends to choose this hotel. Good job to the helpful staff.
