I went in April 2025. Via the klook app, I bought the Tobu limited express ticket for train from Asakusa station to Nikko station and also had to buy the 4 day Nikko pass for unlimited rides on Nikko’s bus system. Upon arrival at Nikko station, I caught the free hotel bus, which took 50 minutes to the hotel. There are only a few times the hotel bus comes to Nikko Station, but you could take the Nikko (Tobu) bus to get to the hotel (stop 34) easily at any time (ask Info Counter at Nikko station). Beautiful wooden, old but well maintained hotel by the lake. Very secluded, not many guests, extremely helpful staff including some English speakers, big rooms with firm comfortable mattresses, and the small but amazing onsen that I used every day. It was like a private onsen because I rarely saw people there, which could be a bit spooky haha. American Breakfast was included for me, but I opted for the Japanese breakfast on one morning (for about $8 more). It was soooo filling and beautifully prepared and presented. You need to tell the hotel the night before by 8pm if you want the Japanese breakfast the next day. I had to go into town to get other meals and visit a coffee shop (Toki cafe by Tobu bus stop 27 was so good with amazing views).
I stayed for the first time in early spring and liked it so much that I used it again. The number of rooms is not that many, and the entire hotel has a calming interior. Some of the staff were the same people who took care of me last time, and this time everyone was very hospitable, making me want to come back many times. The veterans among the hotel staff have a warm, relaxed demeanor, while the younger staff provide a refreshing service; I felt that each of them did a really good job this time as well. The veteran in the restaurant was dapper, and just a few words from him gave me an absolute sense of reassurance and comfort, which was impressive. The younger staff also made a great effort to explain things and brought up fun topics, creating a lively atmosphere. Of course, the meals this time were also very delicious. Usually, I prefer Italian cuisine over French, but the course offered here was varied and did not get boring, with flavors that were easy to enjoy, leaving me very satisfied. The reception staff was very pleasant as well this time. Overall, it wasn't overly formal or meticulously polite; the smiles and kind words were genuinely comforting, making me feel glad I came. The hot springs were soothing, and the open-air bath was delightful. In early spring, the lack of leaves allowed me to see Lake Chuzenji from my room's terrace, which was nice, but this time the lush greenery provided a calming atmosphere. Furthermore, it was about -10℃, which was a stark contrast to the sweltering heat in Kanto, making it a great place to escape the summer heat. The Irohazaka road is currently one-way up and down, making it easy to drive and access. The day I stayed was the festival day for Mt. Nantai, and there were fireworks over Lake Chuzenji. I couldn't see them because they coincided with dinner, but I visited the Nikkō Futarasan Chūgū the next day, and it had a different charm compared to the one next to the Nikkō Tōshōgū. The Kanaya Hotel merchandise has very cute designs, and I purchased various items at the hotel's shop and the Kanaya Hotel Bakery cafe in Nikkō on my way back, enjoying them at home. I particularly like the Shinkyo-design box can, tote bag, and mug. Next time I visit to pay my respects, I would like to extend my stay to Lake Chuzenji and stay at the Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel. Thank you very much.
I stayed overnight with a friend. My friend fell and twisted their ankle right after arriving. The meticulous support we received with ice, ointments, and band-aids was really helpful. I was looking forward to seeing how things had changed here since it had been 40 years since my last stay. Generally, I don't like hot springs as many tend to have water that's too hot, but the hot spring here was truly at a perfect temperature, making it very comfortable and enjoyable. I had assumed that breakfast would be a buffet, so I was a little disappointed in that regard. Thank you very much.
Free Hotel Shuttle from Tobu Nikko Station as well as on bus route to end of line Yumoto Onsen at Lake Yunoko. Great location on Lake Chuzenji and across from Lake Chuzenji Boat House.. The hotel is a bit dated and meals are expensive but the Onsen was nice, the sauna a plus, staff are welcoming, and the Lake and Boathouse are just a stone's throw across the street from the hotel. Very accessible by bus and shuttle, being 27 km from Nikko. Also, 10 degrees cooler than staying in Nikko and lovely to visit the highest elevation natural lake in Japan. Bus trip to Yumoto Onsen was a treat, with fantastic visitor center providing maps and Lakeview seating and trailside hike to Yudaki Falls. My stay at the Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel was a lucky choice for these reasons!

“A hotel that feels historic.”
We stayed at the hotel to celebrate my wife's birthday. There were some concerns, such as the pot lid in the room not closing properly, making it a bit inconvenient when trying to close it with force. Additionally, since it was limited to the first floor, I think it's a drawback that other guests could go out to the garden and walk in front of rooms that aren't theirs. When stepping out onto the porch, I found myself facing a neighbor, which made me feel uncomfortable. (I suppose this could also relate to the ethics of the guests...) Aside from the points mentioned above, there were no other concerns, and I had an incredibly comfortable stay. Although we had a regular twin room, it was spacious enough, and there were plenty of towels provided (at least enough for three baths). Also, having coffee and tea available in the lounge for guests was greatly appreciated. Naturally, the hot spring (with a small sauna) also had great water! The most surprising aspect was that since I mentioned it was a birthday trip, we received a gift. My wife was very happy, which made me happy too! Thank you very much! The breakfast was also very delicious. This time we wanted to try local restaurants, so we dined out, but I plan to opt for the hotel dinner on our next stay. It may be due to the season or location, but I highly recommend it for those looking to spend a quiet and relaxing time. I felt the same ambiance as hotels with good overseas reviews. I truly appreciate being able to have such a wonderful time even though we booked at a great deal through Agoda!
