an excellent business hotel”
As expected it is a very convenient location, walking distance to Portman (Shanghai Centre) where most foreign companies are. I like City Hotel for many reasons and most importantly is the convenience. The service was very efficient and this is important for business hotel. I didn't spend time here for lunch, dinner or drinks but the breakfast was surprisingly up to par. Obviously not comparable to 5-Star foreign run hotels but the buffet was just right for business traveller. I was extremely pleased to see an egg station! Only negative was my room being at the far end corner where wifi was not receiving well at all. My Skype call has to be done near to the room door, over there at the bed side was poorly connected and the desk has absolutely NO signal...

A good stay in Shanghai”
I was living in China and went to Shanghai many times and tried different places. I searched on Agoda and found the City Hotel. I would have preferred to stay closer to a subway station and almost didn't book this one because it was a little further from a station that I usually like. I am glad I booked it though as it was a great 5 nights. The rooms were quiet and comfortable. I booked a non smoking room and floor and that was good for most of the time. There were still people smoking in the hallways and the area by the elevators with many no smoking signs around. Most of the front desk staff were good and the people at the concierge were very helpful. The pool was actually run by another company where the hotel guests were able to use but you need to bring a room towel. The area around the hotel was nice and not too crowded. It was between West Nanjing area and the Middle Huaihai Area both were a little walk but easily accessible. I would definitely stay there again.

The hotel was clean and well equipped with all the essential items for my comfort. The location is superb in a beautiful area of town close to all sorts of attractions.Walking distance to the Big Bud tour stop and Nanjing rd for major shopping. The staff is friendly and very helpful and I had no problem with language. The in house restaurants are fabulous breakfast is very good with a wide variety of foods.80 RMB for all you can eat and the steak house is amazing.Overall I would say that this hotel deserves a top rating from me.

Great location, room smaller than expected”
Good value for the location - easy access to Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road and metro stations on 2 different lines. We had free internet with the Exec Room and it was fast and reliable. Non-Mandarin-speaking guests may have problems with housekeeping and room service. They did not understand my request for an iron but did offer to come to the room and find out more. I liked the area around the hotel, with lots of small shops and eats. The HK restaurant next door and Shanghainese diner (for lack of better word) that sells pan-fried buns and noodles one block down before Starbucks is good.

Great location, attentive staff, comfort, value”
City Hotel is very nicely located in Shanxi Road - a quiet, boutique and tree-lined main street, convenient to wherever you want to go in Shanghai. The staff was very helpful and pleasant, even obtaining tickets for us before we checked in and called from another city. They spoke excellent English. The room, though not luxury, is very well-equipped and extremely clean and well-kept. On the 21st Floor, it offered a terrific view of the city. The only downside was we were told that "for this room", presumably meaning an Agoda booked room, free internet wasn't included -- it would cost the equivalent of $10/day.

4 Nights at the city hotel”
From the moment I arrived at the city hotel I was greeted with a smile, the reception staff speak very good English and went out of their way to help me find locations on a map they provided. The rooms are fine fresh and clean the bathrooms look a little dated but clean all the same. On the 5th floor of the hotel there is a restaurant/bar that serves great food and a good atmosphere in the bar to relax and chat. I would return to this hotel on my next visit to shanghai for sure.

Great overall/Cost/Location/ but small rooms”
At moment undergoing big refurbishment but i visit shanghai often and always stay @ this hotel. Good location/ Prices & Facilities for westerners. I haver stayed @ all other local hotels: cheaper hotels have poor facilities or little english spoken( yan-an hotel cheaper but you get what you pay) Equatorial & Hilton better hotels/Bigger rooms but Twice the cost. Best get executive room @ City Hotel. Best overall costs Package. fast internet free for executive roons. Taking basic room & adding on internet/Breakfast etc actually costs more!!. Exec rooms allow free entry for swimming pool/Gym etc.

Perfect location!”
This hotel is located right in the middle of Nanjing Lu and Huaihai Lu, which is a perfect place to stay in Shanghai. Appr. ten minutes walk each way. The hotel has a quite okey standard, but you can skip the breakfast and try Starbucks some minutes away. The rooms are small but functional and there is a gym and an indoor pool. The café in the lobby is far too expensive. The staff is polite and (almost) English talking. No noice around as far as I have experienced and I'v been staying here several times. Not a complaint after maybe 20 stays at City Hotel”
I have been traveling for business to Shanghai for several years and finally settled on City Hotel for every stay. Close to Bund and other areas of interest, nice shopping and stores a stones throw away. Try the dumplings just down the street. The ones friend in huge (3 feet across) steel bowl.

Good choice”
It's a good hotel, not excellent but very good one. Very nice location, not far from subway station line 1, walkable to line 2. Around there are a lot of nice places to see. It's clean in the room, with nice view of the city. Had breakfast included just for one person, but could buy for the second one and was not expensive. Furniture is not very modern but it looked more old on the pictures compare to real life. Highly recommend to stay in this hotel. Try to book in advance to get better deals.

better than average chinese hotels”
Good stay for the weekend in Shanghai. I hate how all the rooms in China are smoking rooms so City Hotel is great because there are some non-smoking rooms. It costs more than average Chinese hotel but it is better. Staff is friendly and when I complained that it was too hot and the window was sealed shut, they sent someone up to unlock the window. Bathroom was clean but drain was slow. Nothing's perfect. Top location for spending a weekend in Shanghai.

Home away from home”
I have stayed at City hotel many times in the past 2 years. I never think about going else where. The service is always great the main staff speak English and are friendly and knowledgeable about the city where to go for the best food sight seeing and local events. The room service food is good and always served hot and fast. Location is great many places within walking distance for shopping food and local sights. The area is quiet and clean and offers great walking routes around the area.

Hotel is not so close to the subway but is walking distance to West Nanjing Road and Hueihai Road. Hotel is very clean, nice staff who speak English. Taxi access is easy. This hotel is easily best value for the money in shanghai area. 10 minutes taxi ride to Xintendi, Tienzhifang, Xujahuei, The Bund. Lot's of Westerners stays at this hotel. Bathroom is mid size but contemporary design. Very clean. Bed is comfortable.

Alright for short stay”
I spent a few days in City Hotel Shanghai. The location is close to the Metro, which makes it very easy to discover the city. There are also a lot of stores for shopping, a starbucks and a McDonald's (for those who care about it) along the way. The bathroom was of sufficient size and clean. I really liked the bed as it was quite big and soft. The view was alright. However, the room had a carpet floor with some bigger stains on it. They provide slippers (even new ones every day, if you remove them) but this something I did not appreciate. The TV had HBO, showing movies in english (only commercials between movies). The pool looks beautiful, but IT COSTS EXTRA. 100RMB (~12 Euro), I think every day. Internet in the room cost me 60RMB a day. Also FYI, I had to pay deposit of 300RMB per day) The breakfast consisted of a buffet, offering fruit, cereal, cheese, sausage and more warm, mainly western-style dishes. Hope this is helpful for you guys!

Location not bad. ”
overall is not bad. apart from hotel under going major exterior renovation, the overall stay was ok. breakfast was just normal, dont expect fantastic ballroom serving or international spread of food. hotel staff speak english too. most of the time you may have to wait for quite a while for the hotel staff to get you a taxi. and also due to the hotel is located on a one way traffic, some taxi drivers just couldnt get a right turn in. you may have to end up walking a bit. rooms are ok, clean and no foul smell. you get free internet on executive rooms. walking distance to huaihai rd where all shopping and food joints are located.
