Discover the neighborhoods of Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi is a gem hidden right under the nose of many travelers. On Java’s easternmost tip, the city is mostly known for its ferry connection at Ketapang to Gilimanuk in Bali. This 45-minute journey links one paradise to another is makes Banyuwangi worthy of a day trip at the very least. The Banyuwangi train station sits near the port and provides a common means of arriving. The small Blimbingsari Airport also provides a convenient means of reaching this rather secret paradise.

Hikers, nature lovers, and surfers are sure to be more than pleased with a stay in Banyuwangi. Alas Purwo is the oldest game reserve on Java, and the savannas of Baluran offer incredible trekking opportunities. Experience more of the local wildlife at Baluran National Park, and if the season is right, visit Sukamade Beach to witness the hatching of sea turtles. The volcano of Ijen makes for an exciting climb, one that is made that much greater if done at night, thanks to the blue flames of liquid sulphur that spark out of the crater. The waves of Pulau Merah Beach and G-Land cater to the traveling surfer, and a chilled out visit to a coffee plantation at Bayu Lor takes care of the leisurely traveler. There are several pilgrimage sites that cater to the cultural explorer, including a tomb frequented by Muslim travelers, the 18th century Hoo Tong Bio temple of Karangrejo which draws in Chinese visitors, and the Hindu Pura Agung Blambangan at Muncar.
