More about Basel

Located in what is known as the corner of three countries, Basel is an important city in Switzerland not only because of its incredible beauty and breathtaking architecture. The city is bordered by France on one side and Germany on the other, and the inside of the city is full of stunning buildings and museums built by world-class architects. The city is served by the tri-national Basel Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport, which is actually built on French soil just a few kilometers outside of Basel. The airport is connected to Basel via a special customs-free road going between the airport and the city, and many airlines have regular flights into and out of this hub.

Once in the city, getting around is most commonly done by foot. Much of the old city is not very large and is easy to navigate, and most of the streets in the old city are car-free. So, tourists especially should plan on a fair bit of walking while getting around the older parts of Basel. The city also has a very efficient public transportation system that includes trains, buses, and trams, so getting around will be easy to do.

There are a lot of impressive buildings scattered around Basel, both old and new architecture that are truly breathtaking. One of the most important of these is the Munster, which is the Basel Cathedral. This church was built over the course of several years during the 10th century, and combines both the Gothic and Romanesque styles of many medieval buildings of the time. Just north of the cathedral is the plaza, or Pfalz, which overlooks the impressive cathedral and is a favorite place for relaxing afternoons or picnics on a nice day.

Basel has a great deal to offer any visitor, from natural beauty to architectural marvels, to ancient historical buildings that have stood the tests of time. The best way to see where Basel’s top attractions, must-see destinations, and great hotels can be found is by exploring the interactive map on this page.
