Bentota beach is the location of a lot of luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. The beach itself is relatively quite. The Surf Hotel is unusual in the area in that it is very open at the front and all rooms have views of the sea from the balconies. Staff, food, quality of rooms are all excellent. Only thing some people might find annoying is occasional train that passes hotel which can be loud - many hotels in this area will have this to contend with as train line is very close to coast at this point - didn't bother us as air con tends to drown out the noise.

Enjoyed our last night in Sri Lanka. After touring from Colombo, Sirigiya, Kandy, Galle and final destination Bentota. Our room boy Sugath was very thorough and made sure the room was clean and of a high standard. We had a riverview deluxe, so you could enjoy watching the water sports whilst relaxing on the balcony. Location couldn't be better. A quick boat trip across river and away from the hustler and bustle. We enjoyed the Mediterranean buffet dinner night. Price was 3000LKR per person, which I thought was reasonably priced. Everynight there is a different option, Sri Lankan, BBQ, Western, Asian etc.. There were 2 other restaurants for dinner as well, Thai or Al la carte. There are daily activities for everyone, if you want to participate. Didn't use the spa facilities, but the prices are higher than you would expect to pay in Australia or Indonesia. Pool area may seem overcrowded to some, but you'll expect that when it's so hot. Overall we would of loved to have stayed one more night

while service in sri lanka is always lacking, the avani spa was better than most. the food was good (try the resturant, not the buffet) and the waiters did try to provide the best service possible. the rooms were clear and comfortable, all have a sea view. the massages are not as satisifying as in thailand or indo, but still relaxing and enjoyable. as with all places in sri lanka, it is over priced for what you get. still, to compare it to its local competition, i would say it is worth a stay. bentota is about an hour ourside of colombo, so it is a quick trip from town.

We stayed here for three nights at the end of our two week trip around Sri Lanka. We got 58%off with Agoda. If we had paid full price we would have been slightly disappointed. The only thing this place is missing is a gym. The pool and beach right on your door step is picture perfect. Bentota is a quick and cheap Tuk Tuk drive away if you need anything from a store, otherwise there are only massage places and other resorts close by. This is perfect if you want to wake up, eat breakfast and relax by the pool/beach. You charge everything to your room so no cash is carried around. We ate every meal at the restaurant and were pleased with the selection and pricing - only a lil more expensive than other western restaurants in Sri Lanka. The staff were fantastic and even surprised us with a chocolate cake as a congratulations gift as we were celebrating our anniversary. I would stay here again without hesitation. It looked like the most modern and clean resort on this stretch sand

We stayed here for a couple of nights while we explored the south of Sri Lanka. What a great place to relax. Our villa was perfect - beautifully decorated, spacious and very clean. We ate at the private restaurant, were served tea on the verandah at 5pm and had al a carte breakfast in our room. The food here was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The location was overlooking the Madu River and was very peaceful and the outdoor spa was lovely. The only downside of our stay here was that there was no accommodation for our driver, unlike the bigger and more mainstream resorts however I believe they are addressing this in the near future.

Traveled with my wife & my daughter (4 years old) to Bentota & stayed at Rockside beach resort. Bentota was affected by the recent cyclone & almost all smaller properties didn't have electricity. While rockside also got impacted, they were able to provide electricity throughout our stay. Unfortunately, there was no hot water nor was internet available. During the perfect season, it would be be an excellent choice to stay. The staff is friendly & courteous as well. The breakfast is ok (an area for improvement). prices for srilankan meal cost around 1.5k sri lankan rupees. (which is sufficient for 2 ppl) Location is great.

After 6 busy and interesting days in Sri Lanka, we couldn't find more beautiful hotel than Heritance Ahungalla. The room have been cleaned twice a day. At the reception desk works very capable staff whome are always available. If you ever stay in this hotel please ask for mr Dinusha Kularathne. He made for us surprise in the room (flowers for wife and fruit basket). He makes a great effort to accomplish any request we had. In general this is the best hotel we ever stayed in, don't skip it if you ever come in Sri Lanka.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel very much. Rooms are clean, air conditioned and comfortable. The beach and train station is very near. But the main thing which has impressed us the most is the staff of this hotel. The manager of the hotel is just incredible. We felt ourselves like at home. Food are tasty and fresh. The seafood we ordered at the hotel probably is the best in Sri lanka.

Amazing property with amazing view room. Very very clean beach. Amazing staff. Booked sea view facing 2nd floor deluxe room. Very spacious room. Jacuzzi bathroom. Very big balcony. Amazing stay. Ms. Tanuja helped us checked in the most convenient manner. Breakfast got less options. Recommended in all the manner. Very reasonable as compared to other high end properties there in Bentota.

My family (wife, me and kids ages 2 and 6) stayed here several nights. We are architects and were visiting as many Bawa designed hotels as possible. The design is very nice and the furniture compliments. The literal next door hotel Villa Bentota is also a Bawa designed place and interesting to check out. Its interiors are a little overboard and compared i actually like this hotel better. I saw the other Bawa resort style hotels and was very glad to be here in this more intimate boutique style hotel. Those were filled with Russians and Chinese and while nicely designed were a bit too big and impersonal. The pool was perfect. And i will model mine at home based on this. It has a shallow end foor kids (age 6) and a 10" deep side spot for cooling down or for the 2 year old to sit and splash, is long enough for me to do laps. Wifi worked throughout decently enough for social media but not really well enough for skype. Food was good. Tea time a great touch at the pool. Room nice and spacious. Mosquito net on bed. Good AC. I checked out a bunch of different rooms and they are all very nicely designed and furnished and special. Each one a bit different. Really cannot go wrong. There is a train line that runs pretty much through the property between the pool/lawn and the very adjacent beach. The train (a short train of 5 cars piled with people) rumbles through about 6 times a day and is not a nuisance at all and actually pretty awesome and hilarious. I really felt like i was in a wes anderson movie. Its pretty surreal and great. The beach is truly stunning although when we went in July the waves were too big to swim. But a walk up the beach to the other Bawa resort hotels just north and a tuk tuk back is a beautiful. I think alot of people are here for just a night or two but i wish we had stayed longer. I could have easily stayed 3-4 days. Bentota is great. Brief Gardens (Bawa's brother) and Lunuganga (Bawa's retreat) are nearby. Turtle rescue fun. Saw a turtle hatch

Not only the place is delightful but Suli and his family are really taking care of their guests with great attention. Having diner or lunch at Happy man is an exceptional experience difficult to be found elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Also Suli organized a 6 days trip for us in the South, we had a wonderful time tx to his son Sini, our driver, and the exceptional places Suli booked for us. Tx again to you and all your family.

My family and I spent our holidays in this hotel in Bentota. Everything was excellent howe I can suggest some facilities to them, for example, they can apply some light from hotel to beach since when you back from the beach to your room you should pass 100 meters from a corridor of beautiful trees but it's dark. They help you to arrange your plan to visit Bentota and other places.

Lovely to be in the quiet garden here at the end of our hectic tour. So much better than "posh "hotels. The pool was beautiful too. The host family is sweet, and Manjulu was very helpful. We booked a river safari and our airport transfer through him, both very reasonable. He was happy to take the 4 of us in his little car wherever we wanted to go also. A relaxing end to our trip.

This place is just lovely. The rooms were spacious and clean, with wonderful outlook to the well kept large grounds. Location is superb as away from noise but 5 minutes to all the action and necessities. 5 mins to surf beach, 3 mins to train station ( walking). Perfect. Highly recommended. The issues with internet and getting our oven going were resolved by the helpful staff very quickly. Great place for families too

as i arrived i felt at home in less than a minute, welcomed with a complimentary drink and shown to my massive room with a double bed which could have fitted four. the pool is small but charming, spotless and great to have a dip in when it gets so hot. the food was great on the first night and ok on the second. compared to other areas of sri lanka the prices were high but i think it was a regional thing. included breakfast was filling and fresh. you can borrow one of many bikes to get down to the beach in 6 mins, 10 for swimming area. it was calm and peaceful with many german-speaking guests, bentota beach is a stunning quieter stretch of sand but watch for the strong currents in places. overall a wonderful stay, would go back!

I really enjoyed a great time in this guest house during my 2-day trip with brother. The host is so nice and kind to us, she offered fresh fruite juice to us for free when we get there, and also told us some nice spots and useful information to travel, which is really very helpful. The room is very clean, quiet and tidy, makes you just feel like at home. There's also a beautiful little garden in the guest house with flowers in full bloom, very impressive! And the guest house is very close to railway station and bentota beach, just 5-minute walk,very very convenient, it's definitely the best guest house I've stayed in Sri Lanka!

This was a fantastic place. Not even a year old, the facilities were exceptionally maintained and the compound looked exquisite. The outdoor pool was lovely. well maintained and very clean. The water was lovely to swim in. The surrounding gardens were beautiful, neat and extremely tidy. As a couple we loved it and could not fault a thing and the colours for the environment were great. Appealed to your eyes. The rooms were big and the bathroom was open big and kept spotless and clean. As for the staff they were brilliant. Rekha the owner was very nice and did all she could to make us feel welcome everyday and was always willing to help. Breakfast was filling and very tasty. The two workers there who looked after the place were also really nice and friendly. Always smiling and on hand to help us. Very approachable and accommodating people and fantastic hosts. Overall this place was truly magnificent and myself and my wife would return in a heartbeat. We would recommend it to anyone.

It was our first stop in Sri Lanka. We have read a lot of reviews saying that Ahungalla was a relaxing place, a place for getting away from the chaotic world. And it was exactly that. Ahungalla was one of our favourite places in Sri Lanka and Villa Thotupola was a big part of our stay. Location: The villa is perfectly located, right next to the amazing Ahungalla beach. The sunset from the villa is beautiful and some Calming. Rooms: Rooms are very clean, big and spacious. Food: The food is AMAZING and big portions. You have to try the seafood. The breakfast is perfect. Nightlife: There is nothing to do at night, except for going to one of the 3-4 resorts on the beach. Overall, this place is perfect for people looking for relaxation and some time away from any busy and hectic life. Downside of the Villa: The only downside was that there are fishermen in front of the Villa every morning, fishing. It wasn’t an issue for us but for some people it might disturb their privacy.

Very pleasant stay at this hotel. Although right next to the railway line, which added a bit of character to the place, although they start early in morning (5am!) and go past till late. But this didn't spoil our stay there. As with all other hotels we stayed at, they cater for westerners and do not serve the local Sri Lankan breakfast unless you order it and that means they buy it from out so not made fresh which is a shame. Nonetheless, the breakfasts were overly substantial, and could do with asking guests what they want as there was a lot of wastage. Overall we had a lovely 3 nite stay

After a long overnight flight and taxi journey, we arrived at the guest house at about 10am. We took a taxi from the airport (at I think about 6000 LKR), and after the driver had asked around a bit (there is no signposting on the property) we were welcomed into the guesthouse by Upul and his wife. The room exceeded our expectations and was clean and comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom with proper shower. It could be very hot at night but we were aware of there being no A/C upon booking. Location wise, it was a minute from the beach. Considering that the only other accomodation that we could see in Bentota appeared to be a couple of 4/5-star large beachside resorts, it was excellent value for money. However I would say that the highlight was the hosting, which was welcoming, helpful, and we had huge breakfasts! Upul speaks German and English I think. Would recommend.
