Traveler impressions of Cherating

More about Cherating

This quiet and sleepy fishing village may be one of the top resort destinations in this region, but Cherating has managed to maintain its slow pace of life regardless of the attention its beautiful beaches continue to receive. Cherating is best accessed by bus from cities like Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan.

The beaches of Cherating are wide, clean and perfect for families, with the occasional bar, chalet, or bungalow dotting the sand.

This charming town’s laid-back personality and inexpensive accommodation options have made it a popular beach getaway for backpackers and domestic tourists. The most sought-after resorts are on the beach, surrounded by palm trees with long stretches of sand at their disposal.

Not that visitors to Cherating will want to leave the beach for long, but there are a few pursuits on offer that might tempt travelers away from the sun loungers. One of the most unique is definitely the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary. The sanctuary was first established to protect and reverse the dwindling number of leatherback turtles that often lay their eggs on Malaysia’s beaches. Visitors to the sanctuary can learn about the life-cycle of these turtles and even watch them as they come ashore to lay their eggs during the period of May through July. There is also the option to take part in a program that releases the hatchlings into the sea, which is done at night and is a popular activity among travelers to this area.

Balok Beach, which is located just south of Cherating Beach, is similarly clean and picturesque. It also offers an opportunity to take part in some windsurfing, kite-boarding, or just go back to the usual activity of sunbathing.

There is a lot more to see and do around Cherating, and the best way to discover the attractions, sites, and activities that this town has to offer is by exploring the interactive map on this page.
