More about Como

This picturesque city near the Swiss-Italian border has been favored by holiday makers for centuries. Positioned at the southern edge of the Alps on the edge of Lake Como, it dazzles visitors with stunning scenery, crisp Alpine air and beautifully-preserved architecture. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, Como's appeal is evidently timeless, as it's still the preferred residence for many prominent Italians, not to mention some high-profile celebrities.

Lake Como is the focal point of town and some of the best hotels in Como are positioned along its shoreline. Leisure activities not surprisingly center on water sports, with swimming, yachting, skiing and beach volleyball all popular pastimes. Jet skis and motor boats are also for hire, as is kite surfing and wind surfing equipment. Travelers can explore the entire lake by chartering a private yacht or taking a boat tour, and on terra firma, horse riding and mountain biking are available for the adventurous.

Como's urban center is quite compact, so hotels in Como city center enjoy easy access to the lake side. Around town, visitors will find architectural throwbacks from as early as the 5th century. Como cathedral was built over a span of 350 years and exhibits several architectural influences, including Baroque and Gothic. Other buildings of note include the Romanesque San Fedele church from the 1100s, and the Basilica of Sant Abbondio, featuring bas reliefs and frescoes from the 14th century.

Como is a popular weekend getaway for Milanese, being only an hour's drive from Milan. Most travelers get to Como by flying into Milano Malpensa airport then driving or taking the train from Milan.
