A very interesting place to visit, Tom's working mine was well worth the stop, value for money. The Breakaways are well worth driving to and being able to go into a few of the underground buildings was good and a tourist place called Umoona was worth the stop
This is an opal mining town and so is hot, dry and dusty - but it has plenty of opal shops to dazzle you with lovely stones in all sorts of settings.
There are only a few attractions within the town itself but a place called the Breakaways is about 35 kms away and presents some dramatic landscape. Many of the buildings are dug out from the underground which is interesting to see. Some mines offer tours and allow "noodling" (looking for opals amongst the dug out rock).
Nice place to see once, a very hot place with a lot of insects ,need a face net, but it was a big pleasur to visit this place
Above ground the town is pretty dismal. The opal fields are fascinating but ugly from above. The Breakaways were amazing .
the area away from the opal fields is beautiful. Recommend a tour to the national park, the Breakaways, the dingo fence.
