Skip this city and go straight to airport. Dirty,polluted, smells like burning plastic, corrupt, hot and dusty.
Beach is crowded with panhandlers.
I only stay here to conduct business. Since it's the de facto capital of Tanzania all the offices are here.
Otherwise there is really no reason to stay here. It's fairly safe, but not much to do or see.
The colonial charms of DSM were old and delapidated 15 years ago. DSM is a city undergoing serious change.
Lots of high-rise charm-less building going on, at present. The motor vehicles now are beyond thw capacity of the road system. Traffic jams are frequently long and polution is high. There is not much sightseeing to be done in DSM itself, the beaches and beach hotels are north of the city, or across the water in Zanzibar.
