Donghae caters to the travelers who are seeking a relaxed getaway. The city offers up plenty of cultural and historical sites to visit, including the Yongsan Confucian School established in 1705 as well as the much younger Daoengaehyanggyo which came about in 1995. Throwbacks to the past include sites such as Haeamjeong Pavilion, Yakcheon village, and Dongbusataek. Those looking for complete leisure can head to the beaches of Mangsang and Chuam. Near Chuam Beach is a rock formation known as Candlestick Rock, a feature of Donghae that has been immortalized in the Korean national anthem.
