More about Gwangju Metropolitan City

The city of Gwangju is located in South Jeolla, and is best known for its role in the famous political movement of the 1980s. This major event, known as the Massacre of May 18th, is the focal point of many of the city’s memorial parks and monuments, but the large number of university students and arts scene gives the city also a young and hopeful culture.

The city is served by Gwangju Airport as well as a railway and bus station, which are often the preferred methods of transportation for locals and budget-conscious tourists.

The Massacre of May 18th is a huge moment in the history of South Korea’s political development, and as this city was at the forefront of the movement, it’s certainly worth any tourist’s time to visit at least one of the memorial sites dedicated to this day. For example, the May 18th National Cemetery is a somber place that often sees many visitors, including locals who are still very proud of their city’s role in history. Along with this cemetery, there is also a public park complete with a museum that can offer a lot more insight into the events of that day.

On the other hand, the Gwangju Art Museum is a great destination for exploring this city’s arts scene. The museum has both permanent and periodic exhibits and is often frequented by locals as well as tourists.

There’s much more to see and learn about Gwangju, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to find out where the attractions and hotels can be found in this interesting city.
