Discover the neighborhoods of Helsinki

Founded in 1550 and the capital of Finland since 1812, Helsinki is considered something of an international metropolis with a small-town feel. The city was designed by Johan Albrecht Ehrenstrom and Carl Ludwig Engel in an Empire style in the 1800s after being conquered by the Russians. The county of Helsinki borders the Gulf of Finland with the city center on the southern peninsula. Travelers arriving to this charming destination arrive 18km north of the city via Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport.

When visiting the “Daughter of the Baltic,” you will be easily swept away by the grand design of the city. Classic sites are divided between a beautiful set of churches and a wide variety of museums. The unofficial symbol of the city is the Lutheran Cathedral which stands proudly in Senate Square, an area that also hosts the University of Helsinki and the Prime Minister’s Office. Museums are as exciting from the outside as they are on the inside thanks to incredible architectural design. The National Museum of Finland and the Ateneum Art Museum are must-visits when planning your itinerary. Outside the popular highlights, there is the sea and its vast archipelago that call travelers to visit. The summer is the greatest time to visit as the temperatures are friendlier to getting out and about. During this time, the great sea fortress of Suomenlinna and the Seurasaari Open Air Museum are at their prime. Parks, Olympic sights, and monuments are also sprinkled throughout the city.

A diverse range of accommodation is available in Helsinki. Travelers can choose between eco-friendly properties, hostels, camping, and apartment hotels. Be sure to check out the interactive map of Helsinki for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
