More about Isimangaliso Wetland Park

On the northeastern edge of KwaZulu-Natal province, Isimangaliso Wetland Park sits in a region known as the Elephant Coast. This South African UNESCO World Heritage site offers a wealth of wildlife diversity and includes Lake St. Lucia, the St. Lucia and Maputaland Marine Reserves, the Coastal Forest Reserve, the Kosi Bay Natural Reserve, and UMKhuze Game Reserve. All these features come together to form one of South Africa’s most popular destinations.

Lake Lucia gets much of the focus due in part to it being the largest estuarine system in Africa. It is separated from the coastline by the world’s highest forested sand dunes. There is an abundance of recreational activities that can be hand to take full advantage of the surroundings. Hiking trails, surf fishing and deep sea fishing, and horse riding can be enjoyed. There are more than 500 South African bird species, the country’s largest hippo population, and a range of antelope amongst the animals that roam this land, making game viewing quite the treat to those who pass through. Whale watching is also popular during the mating season.
