This is very much a back packer, diving destination. The island is changing fast and the real beauty is quickly disappearing to tourism, worth a visit if you are staying in koh samui and want a break for a couple of nights.
if your not into diving then there is not a lot for you too do here.
Ko Tao is small island, very unique and nice place It is valuable to rent a boat to see the island around, make stop on some nice beaches and as well national park was definitely interesting and worth to see
So tourist and backpacking style, better to avoid if you are not the moonlight party type and much looking for a place to rest and relax and enjoy for your precious vacation as a couple or family especially
I didnt go for the diving but wanted 2 see if there was a different mindset than Southern Thailand. Sadly this island is being exploited like everything else and seems not to have a sustainable growth.
Garbage bins are almost not 2 be seen. But the ride there is quite interesting.
Aside from the much read about bucket fuelled tweenage nights on Sairee this island is an absolute gem in terms of the beaches and bays that ring this tiny rock in the middle of the gulf of Thailand.
It's seriously beautiful and it doesn't take long to get away from the crowds and find your own little paradise bay . It's been on the backpacker map now for more than 20 years and development is always ongoing but there is still a beach for everyone here, from the "fill my bucket with booze" Sairee type to the peace and quiet of Mango bay. Definitely worth the visit
Koh Tao is very lovely island in Thai gulf about 1 and half hour far from Koh Samui by High speed catamaran but make sure that the sea not too rough for some people that easy to get sick on boat.
Koh Tao is very attractive place for diving.
The snorkelling trip is quite safe compare to other Island, because it just surround the island. Can bargain up to TB2000 for private boat without food but with drink.
Koh Tao is much more laid back than Koh Samui. Nightlife is limited but after enjoying the beautiful days with lots of water activities, you don't need much nighlife.
The island is breathtakingly beautiful & the people super friendly.
WE CAN ENJOY THE DELICIOUS FOOD WITH REASONABLE PRICE , NICE RESIDENTS . YOU CAN DIVE HERE , IT WILL MAKE YOU HAVE A GREAT EXPERIENCE^^ love this place verY much :-)
Beautiful place, beautiful people, our stay was fantastic, can't wait to go again. Be very careful in the traffic there are no road rules and many accidents.
Amazing island, friendly People, relaxed enviroment, good Food! Best Choice for the travellers who seeks water activities like Snorkeling and Scuba Diving.
Has two of Asia's best freediving schools.
Lots has change since my last visit in 2002. There are loads of new hotel and bungalows scattering around the beach and lots of restaurants and shopping.
i don't venture into nightlife, however, one can't miss the bars, some with blasting music. Overall was impressed with the changes but not impressed with Koh Nang Yuan. It was a big disappointment to me. The white sandy beach is now covered with lots of dead corals. Used to be free of charge and now have to pay for a swim.
We loved the island of Koh Tao and will come back and visit on a yearly basis. The Thai people on Koh Tao are friendly, accommodating, and gracious.
It was wonderful and we can't wait to come back!
It's a small island, with too many people! It is possible to get away from the overcrowded main beaches, by climbing into the mountainous viewpoints.
But this is still busy, with tourists, on motorbikes, screeching up the steep hills, or edging warily down the many rutted and sandy trails along the north end of the island. 4WD taxis and local resort trucks make walking along the main road, up the hillside roads, or even walking in the streets, a dangerous pastime. For such a small place, everybody seems to be going somewhere, all of the time. It is possible to get away from the crowded main centre. Over the top, to HIn Wong Bay is one possibility, although there is no beach, just a beautiful sunrise view. Shark Bay offers the quietest solution, but resort prices are very high. Generally, prices are reasonable, elsewhere, due to the competition, and there are lots of 7/11s dotted around the main resorts. Most of the tourists are young, as the island has a reputation for being a party island. If you are more reserved, you should choose a resort away from the main beach and pier areas and find your way across to the east coast.
Koh Tao is a paradise island with one of the worst tourism I ever came across in Thailand. It is near Ko Pha Ngan the famous full moon party island.
Most of tourists are a bunch of kids that go to Ko Pha Ngan for the party and come to rest and dive in Koh Tao when the party is not on. These kind of people that have no interest what's so ever in Thailand or in Thai culture, they just go there because they can get hammered very cheaply. Bad tourists generate really bad costumer service. I could see staff of hotels and bars being tired of been abused by drunk spoiled brats and consequentially started to become rude to just everyone. It's a shame because the actual location is a paradise. Classic example of how tourism screw up a place.
Koh Tao is diving island firstly and foremost. The higher end hotels are positioned high on the cliffs and basically you stay where you are.
So if your a diver then great if not go elsewhere would be my advice
Beautiful Island with coral and fish. But no protection of the nature or sea. More and more buildings with the pollution of the sea from the.
Hotels. Coral Dead or Brown and less fish. The hotel by the sea are very expensive and somebody are just terrible .dirty with insects... Difficult to find Nice quiet place by the. Sea without noisy music.... Too bad . A para dise To preserve quicky from the promoters. The sea is our future!!
Koh Tao is very lovely island in Thai gulf, take about 1 and half hour from Koh Samui by high speed catamaran, attractive place for diving.
Koh Tao has the best massage therapists of anywhere else we stayed during our trip to Thailand. In Koh Tao you will get the best massage.
The Pier and Sairee beach offer good dining and shopping for beach apparel. It's an amazingly beautiful island which is small and inviting.
went for the diving but was a bit disappointing wasn't so much to see here. The village is ok with lots of restaurents and little shops.
I couldn't believe how touristy Maeheed and Sairee beach were - masses of tourists over xmas / New Year - mostly aged between 20-30yrs.
The rest of the island is very beautiful and far less touristy. There are some gorgeous tucked away beaches. Snorkelling is great and there are loads of scuba diving companies. My friend and I went on try dive with Big Blue - they were very careful and professional - a great experience.
Among all the bad news you hear from this island, it's quite nice place. Actually it's one of the best island in Thailand.
It's quite but not so quite during the day time. The water is crystal clear. My favorite beaches are freedom beach and Sairee. If you have time get a taxi boat to Koh Nangyuan for snorkeling is a must!
You need to look around for real Thai food, most places seem to offer exactly the same menu, which is very limited.
A couple of places I are at which looke as though they were a bit more traditional , just didn't really want to serve you and was probably the worst service I have had anywhere. They start closing up some of the restaurants at around 9.30 I learnt from another traveller , which means it gets a. Bit uncomfortable if you are still eating. The beach at Kot Tao is nice , the sunsets are beautiful and you can get accommodation right on the beachfront, which is pretty nice.
Diver´s paradise. Doesn´t mather if your a pro or just wanted to get started. Lovely diving waters around Koh Tao
Excellent place to just relax, to snorkel, dive, enjoy company of others, massages, nightlife are all excellent
Beautiful island, amazing people. El gringos restaurant very good. Big blue diving full of brilliant people
Koh Tao is mainly a place for scuba diving, though it is great for walks, beaches and snorkeling as well.
I was a Little misplaced because I don´t dive and snorkel and Koh Tao is an absolute diver´s paradise.
I found a store I really liked and spend my time Shopping. It is called Alila and opposite of Chopper´s. They have wonderful Dresses and Accessoires. I would really like to purchase more but have no contact Details. If someone can help me out here, I would appreciate it a lot!
We stayed there for 2 nights, Nangyuan island is good for Scuba, Sairee beach is good for nightlife..
.Chalok Ban kao for cliff hotels.
Unless you are a diver I suggest you vacation at another island. Not worth the money we spent there.
