The modern day Kuching is a city of history, food, and nature. Set in Sarawak, Kuching makes up 30 percent of the state with the rest being covered by thick jungle. Kuching formerly belonged to the Sultan of Brunei who then ceded the entire area to James Brook in return for his help quelling a rebellion. Three generations of white maharaja ruled the city, bringing a Western influence that can still be seen today. The city was later given to Great Britain, then taken over by the Japanese in World War II, and finally rejoined Malaysia as a city managed by two separate local authorities.
Few cities can relate to the evocative Kuching. Many of their hotels are in the form of beautiful period houses. Mosques and Buddhists temples such as
Hong San Temple are able to be visited, and so too are theaters, libraries, and more than a dozen museums. Some would say the national parks are the best part of the city. Long tail boat rides down the Sarawak River and an overnight stay in a remote longhouse of the Bidayuh tribe make for a truly exotic getaway.
Kuching International Airport services the area from Kuala Lumpur. It also operates regular connections to Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, and a few other important regional cities.
