More about Kumamoto

On the Japanese island of Kyushu is the Kumamoto prefecture and its capital city of Kumumato. The large castles found here are one of a few things that the city is known for. Shuttle buses make an hour’s long journey to reach the city after disembarking from Kumumato Airport, and train services also provide a means of arriving. Traversing the city is made convenient with a two-line tram system and extensive bus system. Getting around by bike is also a convenient and rewarding option.

Several sites make Kumumato a noteworthy destination. One of its most notable is the rebuilt Kumamoto Castle. It was brought back to life in the 1960s after being burned down in 1877. Although it has lost some of its authenticity, the castle has been considered a must-see attraction and the heart of the city. Another must-see is the Suizenji Gardens that provide a feel of the country right in the middle of the city. There are excellent places to visit for those wanting to take in the views of the city. These include Mt. Kinpo and Hanaokayama. Honmyo-ji Temple is one of the city’s most favorite temples, built in honor of the man who built Kumumato Castle. A long staircase lined with candles leads to the temple and then to the hill’s summit where one can get views of the castle towering over the city.
