Gion Hatanaka
Gion,Kyoto - View on map
"If you love immersing yourself in a culture and just going with the flow, a ryokan is a great way to experience a part of the long and ancient culture of Japan. A traditional style hotel, it is a different universe from your 4 or 5 star modern hotels, but as a unique experience, it is superlative. I cannot recommend enough that you go for the full experience - the kaiseki dinner, five courses of local, seasonal dishes, with easily 6 to 12 different foods in each course, is both delicious and artful. Luckily it is usually served in the room, and you are already sitting on the comfortably springy tatami mat because you are not going to want to move for several hours afterwards. The public hot baths are HOT! Ryokans were traditionally a one-night stop for pilgrims and travelers, and the amenities are customized to that experience - if you have been sightseeing to the limit of your endurance, a night in a ryokan is a great way to rest your aching muscles and relax before diving back into exploring the wonderful nation of Japan. Gion Hatanaka in particular is wonderfully placed next to Yasaka, an ancient shinto shrine, and within easy walking distance of Nishiki Market (great for foodies!), Kodai-ji, Shoho-ji (Buddist temple), Kennin-ji (Zen buddist temple with zen rock garden) Hanamikoji dori (the classic neighborhood of geiko/geisha) and just a thousand and one different attractions that are fascinating! The staff really cares about every little detail and your stay here will be a delight!"

Hotel Kanra Kyoto
Kawaramachi,Kyoto - View on map
"We loved the aesthetics of the hotel from the moment we stepped in. The room and amenities made our stay very comfortable - very spacious, very clean. Location is close to Kyoto station (10-15mins walk); not as close to Gion though you can access from subway which is 5mins walk from hotel. But what stood out was the helpfulness of the staff. They helped us to book restaurants ahead of our arrival, accommodated food allergies and gave us flexibility to take one pre-paid breakfast as a dinner because we were leaving too early on our last day to enjoy the breakfast. We stayed in another Kyoto hotel (Gion Hatanaka) prior to Kanra which unbelievably refused to help us book restaurants in advance nor adjust breakfast for my husband's food allergies, so we really appreciated the warm hospitality coming to Kanra."

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto
Kyoto,Kyoto - View on map
"The four seasons always has a high standard and this one is no exception. There were a few things that were a little bit of a letdown. Before booking, we didn't realise that it was a non-smoking hotel. Even though we had an outdoor balcony, we couldn't smoke there, instead had to walk down through the lounge to the far end of the outside deck which kind of makes you feel unwanted in the hotel. Also, the breakfast buffet is not up to par for such an expensive and high-end hotel, most of the options were fruits and salads & even the bread selection was quite small. The meat selection was either pork or a few fish selections so if for religion reasons you don't eat pork such as myself & my husband, then you are out of luck. On the plus side, the staff was very helpful and always had a smile on their faces. We also reserved a private tour guide through them and our guide "Hiro" was AMAZING! Very knowledgeable and polite we had originally booked him for 3hrs and ended up extending for almost 5hrs. Since we were on our honeymoon the staff surprised us with a handwritten note, chocolates and little gifts with notes explaining the history of each one from the Japanese culture, which was very thoughtful. Overall I think if they provided smoking rooms or allowed guests in rooms with balconies to smoke on the balcony it would make the guests who smoke, more welcome. We will definitely be back to Kyoto. It was our favourite out of all the places we visited in Japan."
