More about Male City and Airport

Male City is the most populated and capital of the Republic of Maldives, once serving as the island where the king chose to vacation. Because of this royal history, the city is home to many historic buildings and monuments.

Male International Airport is located within this municipality, on the island of Hulhule, which is an artificial island that offers a quieter beach getaway for those who want to escape the densely populated city.

The city is very small and densely populated, so getting around is easier done on foot. Almost every place in Male can be reached on foot and it would take not much longer than an hour.

Jumhooree Maidan, also known as Republic Square, is the center point of Male City and the place where most public events take place. The square serves as a great meeting place for locals and tourists, and it’s a good place to experience some of the local culture by observing whatever demonstrations or evens are being held at any given time.

Travelers looking for a more historical and cultural experience will find that the National Museum is a great starting point. Sultan Park and Museum was once the Sultan’s palace, now surviving as a public museum that houses an eccentric collection of historic, royal, and cultural items.

There’s much more to see in and around Male City, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to find out where the attractions and hotels can be found in this interesting city.
