  1. More about Mount Cook

Mount Cook

The small village of Mount Cook is the gateway to the vast Mount Cook National Park, an incredible natural attraction that’s covered in glaciers and over 20 of New Zealand’s peaks. The village is accessed either by private car or shuttle service, but the Glentanner Airport is located only about 15 minutes away, so it’s a good entry point.

As noted, the Mount Cook National Park is the single most important landmark of this village, as the park covers an area of over 700 square kilometers, a dream destination for campers and hikers who don’t mind spending days getting through the expansive forests, mountains, and lakes that are located within the park. Almost all of New Zealand’s peaks are located within this park, as well as the famous Tasman Glacier.

Although the village is small and has a permanent population of only a couple of hundred people, it entertains visitors in the hundreds of thousands each years, so it’s well equipped to provide all the necessary amenities, especially for hiking, camping, and trekking enthusiasts.

With so many natural attractions from which to pick, it’s easy to see why Mount Cook is such an important stop on any naturalist’s journey through New Zealand. The interactive map on this page is a great place to start exploring where the rest of the hotels and attractions surrounding Mount Cook are located.
