The streetcar system is great. You can visit all the major sights for $3/day. We even used it to/from the Amtrak station to our Canal St.
hotel. Most of the streetcar drivers are quite helpful - calling out the next stops and giving tips on transfers. The Bourbon Street area can be intimidating at night with touts and other characters calling out to visitors. But police presence is very noticeable with both NO city and LA state police on patrol. Police cruisers are parked along Canal and sections of the French Quarter.
The city is a force field of positive energy! Loved the street performers, the vibe, the history, the architecture! I did notice that so many places were all about the drinks and most of the tourists are over 60! My husband and I would have enjoyed a more relaxed atmosphere to hear music during the day without it being a sleazy bar scene.
Moved the carriage ride - great way to learn the history and cover some ground. When you walk around on your own, you won't get that rich history!
A vibrant, fun place and definitely on our "must return" list. The locals are amazingly friendly, the nightlife fantastic and New Orleans cuisine is outstanding.
I loved New Orleans it was all I thought it would be. We enjoyed the night ghost walk around the streets.
I would recommend a walk around Loui Armstrong Park. The paddle steamer on the Mississippi is a must.
Very tourist oriented city, hard to meet real locals when you stay down town (French Quarter). Bourbon St is crazy but fun for a night if on the weekend, Frenchman st is better for week nights and has more locals.
Shopping is poor unless you are after souvenirs as these shops are everywhere. If you want anything else you have to go out of the city center to the Malls.
Always feel like I leave a little bit of my heart and soul in NOLA. Always stay in the Quarter as I must have dinner in my favorite places.
Rent a car and travel the old plantation roads.
A fascinating city. The French Quarter is a little too 'museified' but beyond a limited zone, there a great deal of authentic urban vibrancy.
This is a city to visit and revisit, to be sure.
Its a great city to see a wide variety of culture, music, and food. Everywhere you go there is entertainment.
