Ninh Binh

Located in northern Vietnam, Ninh Binh is most famous as the gateway to the village of Tam Coc, a stunning countryside complete with spectacular cave systems. The most common way to reach Ninh Binh is either by bus or taxi from Hanoi, especially for international travelers. Upon arriving in Ninh Binh, visitors settle into one of the many hotels in the area before starting their journey into the countryside.

Ninh Binh can be easily explored either on foot or by bicycle, but getting to the area around Tam Coc Cave is more fun by boat. There are several boats that depart the pier at Tam Coc for a lazy ride along the river, passing by rice terraces and limestone karsts, eventually ending up at the caves for a little more vigorous exploration. It’s perhaps the most popular attraction in Ninh Binh, and one of the best in Vietnam.

Cuc Phuong National Park is located about 45 kilometers north of Ninh Binh, but worth making the trek out there to see the impressive rainforest, and the Endangered Primates Rescue Center. The national park is home to a huge number of prehistoric trees that line the forest, and thousands of beautiful butterflies that that fly around the roadway leading into the forest. It’s a scene out of a painting, and one very much worth delving deeper into. Taking an experienced guide is highly recommended as it’s easy to become disoriented in this dense forest.
